  • How Do You Choose? We are looking at adding another dog. This time a livestock dog that can help around the Homestead. The question is how do you choose? DO you let the puppy choose you or do you choose the puppy?

When we got our Sheltie 15 years ago (she passed over the rainbow Bridge a year ago yesterday), we paid for pick of the litter. At 6 weeks, we went to her 1st home, and I put my hand in the pen and called to Cassie, and she came. She was exactly the right dog for us!
Three weeks after she passed, we went to ASPCA and the county Animal control (Pound) looking for another and after deciding to rescue a dog, hopefully to miss the house training stage, we ended up with a cur hound - who loves to snuggle on the foot of the recliner! We love Dixie, and she loves her forever home.
Both dogs are part of our family and are unofficial service dogs for my husband, who is a sevice connected veteran.

Good Morning!! Aussies are such great dogs (I have four, Sadie, Whiskey, Buster & Kaffe) They all have different personalities and they all will be your "shadow". At this point, I would let the dog choose you, and if you can't decide which one to choose, choose them all! Whatever puppy you choose, you will have a GREAT friend!! Good Luck and congratulations!!

Depending on what you want the puppy to grow up to be (i.e. livestock dog, herding dog, couch potato) you should consider the puppy's activity/energy level. If you want a security dog, you would NOT want to pick the shy puppy that sits in the corner. Whatever puppy you choose will bond with Olivia if she is the one who feeds and takes the puppy outside etc.

By the way. The chickens want to be on the highest roost but that many won't fit. The poor chickens on the bottom roosts are getting pooped on. A roost against the other side can be as high as the tallest nesting box roost and there will still be room under it for the chickens during the day. Just my two cents!

In my experience of breeding dogs for the past 21 yrs, I've only seen a few pups actually choose their owner. I remember in particular one instance where I had one guy come, wanting a specific pup which kept running off away from him, while another pup kept coming and sitting on his boot. He did choose that pup which was smaller than the one he wanted. Most people choose a pup themselves based on gender, size, colouring, markings of what they prefer. and activity level. This is hard to tell as pups bcz as you see in your video, they're in naptime mode. You need the breeder to give recommendations based on them watching the pups for their personality over time that is best suited for your needs and lifestyle. Some pups are outgoing and wild, others are laid back and relaxed. Some may narrow down the choice from that and then choose the pup that comes to them. No matter what pup though, you'll end up loving it and it will love you. I often find people choose the first pup that is handed to them. Not always but usually. If the pup is for Olivia, let her have the final decision but based on guidelines set by the parents is my advice.

My last dog, Chelsea, picked me. A couple had 3 litters of mini dachunds at the same time and mind you this was around 24 years ago. But, anyway all these little doxies were everywhere and I looked at my side and there she was curled up asleep next to my leg( it was a girl ) I wanted a female. Knew she was the one for me and we had her for 16 years. Needless to say she lived a wonderful life.

Nice pie Olivia. All it needed was cheese shredded on top... and some... KETCHUP! I chose my pup by his picture on a Facebook group. I used to Whatsapp my husband cute puppy pics and I just loooove the brindle ones. Didn't expect him to buy it for me though but he did! He is giant now at almost two years old but still likes to jump on me.

We picked by the characteristics we wanted. So as this was going to be our only dog and could be spending chunks of time by themselves, we chose one that would get up and move away when all the others bundled on top. Helps that she was also happened to be the one I fell for from the pics I saw before we went. Our doggy is brilliant, very social with other dogs and people but happy to be left by herself too. Never had any chewing issues either. Wish I could attach pics to here to show you our awesome girl Echo

Beautiful Olivia is just A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E!! She, most definitely should be the"chooser" of the dog! Every child needs their own pet. (since it's already the middle of Jan. 2019 I'm sure that choice has been made). And she is such a good helper on the farm... already a wonderful homesteader and bright as can be. I wish I would have been blessed with a child like her!

After Daddy passed, my Mom was having trouble coming home from school to that big ole house. ( family of 7). I took her over to Grandpa Gill'. She looked at me and I reminded her how many times she wanted Chihuahua puppy. So we went into the back yard. She saw two she liked, but they would not come over. She held about three and just stood there until Grandpa Gill said, "Marian look at your feet". The runt was all over Mom since we got into the yard. So, I leaned down and handed her to Mom. The pup licked her and snuggled into her neck. We took her home. She was Mom's companion for around 15 years.

You guys in America have such cool candy stores!! Bit jealous! Puppies pick you most definitely. The way we chose our dog when I was a kid is to ask the breeder to release all the puppies and see which one ran to me. We ended up choosing the puppy that ran to me first and grabbed a hold of my pants leg and wouldn't let go lol :D I think cats and dogs definitely are the ones who choose their owners.

I make a "winter garden" in a large brandy snifter for my granddaughter. She enjoyed watch the worms working in the soil. Part of the "garden" was violet plants, and grasses. It was lovely. Then, one day I noticed the greenery was missing. I lifted the glass from the top and, looking down into the snifter, spied a grasshopper looking back at me. My granddaughter had added this to see what would result. I am not certain, but I think the grasshopper looked up at me and said, "Is there any more?".

I usually start this differently. I picked the breed based upon what my farm needed and most important what my farm didn't need. I needed a herder, I didn't have enough work for a border collie but I needed something with reliable herding instinct and the ability to settle to be a good house dog to boot. So I went looking for a non border collie that was actively herding. Found a English shepherd breeder with working dogs on a cattle farm and a litter in the works. Then I let her know what I wanted which was a social dog, without too much drive but a moderate amount of prey drive. A year ago I brought him home and he is the best, easiest dog I ever owned. Easy on the small stock, active, healthy, and loves people.

I picked my puppy out (now a full grown 5 year old lab) from a litter of eight. It was between the pup strolling about on the porch playing with his pals or the pup hiding underneath the tractor refusing to come out. I took the porch pup. He just seemed more friendly and outgoing. 5 years later, the dog still strolls on the porch like he pays rent or something, haha!

Years ago I adopted an aussie that had been abused. It bit my son while I was making supper. He was afraid of it after that. I moved to a rented farm and when my back was turned he would run off to a neighbors to play with their dog. After he did that numerous times I got tired of bringing him back so I asked them if they wanted him. He chose them so I let them have him. He was good at herding and he helped me to catch all my ducks and geese by just knocking them down while I grabbed them. I would get another aussie but start off with a pup. Love the merles.

I like that set up for the worms may have to think about getting one. You could save the wood from the tree as a walking stick. They cleaned it up good

Depends if you want a working dog or a best friend.
I went to choose my first puppy last weekend, id never done it before but had seen pictures and was pretty certain I was going to go for this particular one. I was chosen by a completely different one and after an hour deciding, he is the one I chose. I will be picking him up in less than 4 weeks (at 10 weeks old!) 😁
    Btw I LOVE your goats.

Hi Al, From many years experience I would venture to say that first time fresheners, both goats and cattle, don't hit anywhere near peak production until their 2nd freshening and often in the 3rd freshening they do even better. With such a small breed you will likely need a 2nd milker to get sufficient milk for family usage and or cheese making. Personally, I'd look for another milk goat for the spring and I'd advise she comes into your herd a month or more before time for her freshening. Suit yourself....Always a nice video! Rick in Pa.

I tend to choose the runt of the litter, and the one who will be taking care of the puppy when it then becomes a dog gets to choose. Puppies are so addictive.
Also want to note this is the nicest family!!

Good Morning Lumnahs. I would pick the puppy that sleeps on it's back and has spots. I always think it's funny when dogs sleep on their backs and I just like spots. Lots of cuties to pick from there. Blessings to you all, especially Pluto, who has quite the surprise coming.
I've been wondering about the pepper you brought in. Mine is pretty but no peppers.

    You definitely pick the puppy
Their personalities as pups will be similar to the ones as adults
We picked 2 dogs, the 1st was sleeping all day and in the middle of their shared dish bowls every meal time and loved cuddles
He has exact same personality as a adult
My other one was a little shy, loved sleeping but had a attitude to her
Now as a adult she sleeps most of the day and has conversations with me and is extremely loyal and seeks comfort in me
One of their siblings who were more energetic as a puppy ended up being more of a guard dog and runs around absolutely everywhere and chews things he shouldnt be chewing on!
Just spend time with them and whichever personality your drawn to go with that one, if you want em to be more relaxed then go with the sleeping ones, if you want one full of energy go with the ones acting a little crazy

I’ve chose puppies sometimes, other times I let the pup pick me. I usually go by the personality I’m looking for in a pup.
    Love all the videos.

When will you breed the doelings? Most goats can be bred to freshen at about a year old. Putting a small amount of vinegar in the water will increase the number of does you get at freshening.
Worm composting seems to be a way to go. I wonder if the benefits will be better running vegetable waste through a worm, a chicken or a pig? I guess the idea is to use the scraps to make compost and not flushing the scraps down a garbage disposal .
    Great work All. Great information.
God bless you for a great 2019.
I would have never thought of feeding my goats on a Christmas tree. We usually leave our tree up until after January 6th. We have even left our tree up until after Mid February.
Life is sure different in New Hampshire than in the Texas Gulf Coast.
Al you ha really been blessed. I remember when you we approaching 5000 subscribers.
The casserole looks neat. What a great way to use left overs.
God bless Our troops, God bless America's and you great family. .
