Poor, poor Hamish! It's just so sad because he is scared and doesn't realize you and the good folks at Virginia Tech are trying to help him. Hopefully this will be the end of the poor guy's troubles. He's so big and docile and cute.

It made me very sad to see Hamish while the vet was working on his lump-jaw.
I'm sure your baby boy was confused, unhappy and mad, but hopefully he didn't feel much discomfort physically.
I saw the vet inject his jaw with something, possibly lidocaine local anesthetic.
That's no fun. I had that before in my scalp when I had to get 30 stitches.
I hope Hamish recovers very quickly, both physically and psychologically.
Marc, I hope you also recover soon from the experience.
Taking him to Virginia Tech was the best thing.
We've taken our animals to Texas A&M for treatment before.

It is best for him but he looked so sad and confused to be there...he is soo good natured, I have seen cattle go in there that was a real challenge, you are an amazing man, your baby will be better.

This is so, so incredible that you're taking care of him to such an extent. I admire your care for Hamish even more understanding how tough it is to provide care for such a big, big boy as Hamish. Ugh, that side eye Hamish gave you…..I did shed some tears. For an animal like a cow to trust his human, and then to have to struggle with having home back up. I really do hope this treatment works. Love and hugs to you and Hamish

Praying for Hamish. You could tell he wasn't feeling well and confused as to why he was where he was. Poor thing, my heart hurt for him. Glad he's being well taken care of, but that really isn't an issue, his owner is very caring.
Recognized the look of fear in his eyes, and the calmimg effect of your familiar, reassuring voice. Seeing how small the doctor's hands look while working on his cheek, gives a perspective on how enormous he is.. and yet incredibly agile too. Warm wishes for a speedy recovery.
Hamish reminds me of that joke about elephants. Where does an elephant sit? Wherever it wants to. Good boy.
I met you two on the first videos of lump jaw. I wondered who this man was who spoke so respectfully and lovingly toward this SPECTACULAR one tonne puppy. He’ll be fine. He’s got great care. You heard it here first. ❤❤

Hamish trusts you so much. It breaks my heart that you had to see him go through that surgery. They gave him numbing medicine didn't they? I will keep your health, Hamish, and Kyloe in my prayers. Thank you for being such a kind and loving "Pop" to your two big boys. Hamish is a superstar patient....such a well mannered boy. Hoping that The Lord heals and helps you three.

🥺 I felt so bad for Hamish. Also, I am so squeamish about this stuff, it was so uncomfortable to watch😣 😂. My cousin is a veterinarian and she finds it amusing to see me squirm when she talks about animal surgeries 😂.

There are companies that make head gates and chutes specifically for Highlands but that’s somewhere around number 32 on my “things I need to buy“ list

Abscess maybe? Looks like there was something stuck in his cheek above where she made the incision.

Marc, do they give Hamish a local anaesthetic to deaden the area?
She did the second time…that was when you saw her jabbing the needle in different areas and squeezing quickly. He had already been given a shot to dope him up at that point, but it was still pretty sensitive so she gave him the lidocaine.
@@HamishandKyloe Yow... My most favorite Veterinarian in the whole wide world was Doctor Richards located in Saint Joseph Michigan. His main concern was always, "What is the animal feeling and maximum pain control!" And he always prayed before preforming any procedure on any ones companions including the feral ones. Unfortunately, he died 2 years ago from Covid, on Christmas day! Since then I haven't been able to find any Veterinarian that comes close to him. Seems like most veterinarians only care about how much money they can milk out of you. I hope that the Vets taking care of your companion's realize the amount of scrutiny they are under and give them the care they deserve.
What is lump jaw?
When a cow is grazing and picks up a sharp object that pierces their gums, then the germs cause an infection that gets into their jaw bone. This results in their jaw filling with pus and swelling. I think it can be fatal if not attended to.
What's causing these abscesses ?
It's an infection called lump jaw.
I think it can be initially caused by a cow accidentally cutting the inside of their mouth with a sharp stick or something while they are eating, then the hole gets infected. Sometimes the infection can get to the bone which will make it chronic- I'm not sure if that is Hamish's problem. I guess that cows have a lot of bacteria in their mouths that make infections like this? It's probably something that hasn't been bred out of them since so many cows are used for meat before it would affect them.
@@lavenderwyvern Yes, you nailed it. Mark has explained it before. That is what is happening with Hamish.
As Morning Wood Farms stated, you nailed it. The only thing I would change is that because the bacteria enters through the mouth, it has a tendency to go directly to the jawbone, which is where it likes to stay.

We keep them because they’re family… I’m not gonna get rid of a pet because his horns are too big or because they bark too much,meow too loudly or because they require special care… that’s not what responsible people do
