If she isn't the cutest little girl in the world, I don't know who is. And to be able to sing, dance and remember lines at such a young age, is amazing.
This 1934 film is best known for providing the first big breakthrough role for the legendary Shirley Temple. A little known bit player before the film, by the end of the year, she appeared in 10 movies, including 4 starring roles in major feature-length films.
In her own words, Shirley loved people so she was able to show that joy at a very young age. Shirley had a lot of energy and her mother enrolled her in dance classes to give that energy an outlet and the rest is history. RIP Shirley, God is probably already thinking of enrolling you in dance classes again!
+John Doe She was very articulate and a talented actress as a very young lady. She may not have had a great singing voice, but that didn't matter. She was an excellent dancer as well.
She's so natural She talks alot about this in her autobiography. In her first scene when James Dunn pauses, he had forgotten his line, "oh" Shirley prompted him and the director left it in. You can see the spit curl down one side of her forehead when she's singing She fell and down and got a scratch there right before filming the dance. Her mother made that dress and they got the scene in 1 shot. She was ecstatic over getting to wear white tap shoes They became her trademark shoes in most films
She did 3 movies with James Dunn. Two in which he played her father and in one "Bright eyes" he played her Godfather and her characte'rs name was always Shirley
She is just gorgeous. I get that dance steps can be learnt by repetition but how can a 4 year old know how to act so well with perfect timing, amazing.
She is always happy and did not feel burden when act. She enjoyed her time in movie, effortless. That"s why she became a great woman also. Some child star gone to wrong direction because they lost their childhood time but she did not, her movie is her playground for her. Great talented star!
From this movie to Baby Take a Bow, she has grown up already. I can see it watching this to her other two movies with Dunn, which by the way, I love their chemistry working together
You can really see how this film launched Shirley where her previous ones had not. This was the first to really show off her talent and showcase it. In the earliest scenes she could sort of just be another "cute kid" on the screen, but when she comes out and sings and dances, it must have just blown audiences away! We know ST so we expect it, but she was a total surprise. People came back to see this otherwise mediocre film JUST to see Shirley in that scene. :)
Interestingly, Shirley Temple's 'Baby Take A Bow' performance was reused six-years later in Temple's 1940 film 'Young People'. For this purpose the original 1934 footage was cleverly re-edited and intercut with new shots of Jack Oakey and chorus.
Beginning of a legendary career... this was her only part in the movie and she absolutely stole it. She was signed to a contract literally hours after doing this scene.
*Little Shirley had SPUNK & the CUTE Factor... There'll never be another like Shirley (Good Actress,The Cutest Smile, Dancer, Singer & Comedian) :) Shirley Take a Bow*
It is so sweet!!! In this movie Shirley Temple was very young. You have to watch it untill the end to see her dance-performance with James Dunn! Such a good thing!!!
Jimmy Dunn truly adored her and loved her so much offscreen. Thats what you see on screen, it was a real love for that little sweetheart. He was a powerhouse of looks and talent.
Elizabeth Lopez If I believed in reincarnation my 3 year old would be her today! She dances and sings exactly like Shirley did. It's unbelievable! Just randomly whenever, and I have no idea where she got it from. Which brings me to TH-cam to search up Shirley Temple videos to show her, and she is like a deer caught in the headlights watching her! ❤️
On this day in 1934 {April 19th} the Fox movie "Stand Up and Cheer!" had its world premier in New York City... And on May 4th, 1934 it opened in theaters nationwide... It was Shirley Temple's debut movie and the premier was just four days before her 6th birthday... Between 1934 and 1949 she appeared in 37 featured films and in 1935 she won the 'Juvenile Award' at the Academy Awards... And in four days she will celebrate her 85th birthday {April 23rd, 1928}...
This might be the best demonstration of the proposition that stars are born, not made. If poor old humanity can resist exterminating itself long enough, Shirley should be blowing video-watching minds with this performance for centuries. A singer whose every note is delightful, and a dancer whose every move is fun to see. Un-toppable charm and grace!
This was very bleak time in our history n many cinemas then were designed to help boost Americans morale n take their minds off the miseries of the Great Depression!!!
She's the greatest but we can only be grateful Fox never allowed her to be in the Wizard of Oz. She would have been better than Judy but now we have both.
@Gianetta oh i know that she had a few short films, i was just wondering if this was her first big movie she starred in, just wondering cause shes so young here =)
@MsLittle1105 At that point in time it wasn't something they really worried about. Children were more obedient and did as they were told, and people were more likely to watch out for any who seemed lost.
the cutest child ever to exist RIP sweet girl...I LOVE YOU xoxox
Giann little miss broadway

Ture
by the time she was 17 (Bachlor and the Bobbysoxer) she was stunning
She aged so gracefully! She was 6 here

In an interview Shirley stated how much she loved working with James Dunn who treated her as a “peer.”
God bless them both😇😇
Love the 30s lingo. "How's chances?"
She is so sweet and clever. She can sing, and dance, and act naturell, and well she had to grow up, but its nice to watch her old movies.
One can definitely see how she became a star. When she died, I cried. She was such a doll baby

I think the guy playin her dad is the same guy who played the family friend (Loop) in Bright Eyes
Yes, he is. He is also the dad in "Baby Take A Bow" (1934)
His name is james dunn. he did many many acts with shirley.

R.I.P. pop love you forever. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
#TakeABow ...Pop
Shirley's appearance in this movie (a film which isn't very good outside of Shirley's appearances!) made her a star.
actually, that's madge evans. gloria stuart co-starred with temple in "rebecca of sunnybrook farm" and "poor little rich girl"
Shirley is phenomenal--what a little winner! But I have to say--those "doll leg" costumes the women were wearing @4:40 were a tad creepy. :P
어쩜 얘기가 저렇게 춤도 잘 추고
노래도 잘하고 연기도 절할까
!cuanto talento y belleza en esa pequeña muñequita!
My favourite actress of all time!
the cutest thing i have ever seen in my life!
I'm miss you Shirley Jane Temple 😢😭💐🇮🇳
Wow she was only 4 years old or so there and she dances better than most adults
yup and her dad again in baby take a bow. they did another movie together too, change of heart before this one
She was wonderful. I loved her movies. So cheerful and so talented.
a Little Legend!
All these people in this scene are dead.
she was five. But when the movie was released, they said she was four. Fox changed her birth certificate
shes gorgeous!
Does anyone else think the guy look a little like Tom Hiddleston?
I love how she says daddy
If only she had been as accomplished as Honey Boo Boo, but this was back in a day when there was no true talent in Hollywood, unlike like now.
+thursdayschildonline
She can kick Honey Boo Boo's ass.
+thursdayschildonline What talent is there today? You call that inbred idiot, Honey Boo Boo talented? What trailer park do you live in?
+Prancer1231 Heru- deshet it's called sarcasm

She and Jimmy Dunn were SO good together!

She now is old enough to be my grandmother now but she was the cutest child i have ever seen so doll like !
"WOAH!"
shes sooo cute
Fantastic to see some of shirleys films, always remember seeing them in the cinema - best times ever
was this her first film ??
Nice to see an intelligent, well raised little actress.
Most brilliant dance pairing!
Why is aunt jemima in this film?
I think the actress billed as ''Aunt Jemima'' was hired by Quaker Oats to promote the pancake mix.
SHIRLEY'S 1ST FILM AFTER BEING "DISCOVERED" AT 3 YRS. OLD! SHE DIED IN 2014 AT 85. LONG, CARING, GOOD LIFE! GOOD SHOW SHIRLEY!!
WTF with the kiss
This is me, Shirley Temple, Loretta Burris Ferguson held captive in Victoria, Texas.
This was very bleak time in our history n many cinemas then were designed to help boost Americans morale n take their minds off the miseries of the Great Depression!!!

Très bon film mettre en français
CUANDO VEIA LAS PELICULAS DE SHIRLEY TEMPLE QUERIA SER COMO ELLA
+Katerine Fiallos era muy talentosa...
@MsLittle1105 At that point in time it wasn't something they really worried about. Children were more obedient and did as they were told, and people were more likely to watch out for any who seemed lost.
@TheJenna1 Temple's birth certificate was altered to prolong her babyhood shortly after she signed with Fox in 1934
