    In Mushoku Tensei episode 22 we saw the aftermath of Turning Point 2 (episode 21). The first turning point was the mass teleportation incident or mana calamity earlier in season 1. In this video I talk about all of the turning point chapters and events in Mushoku Tensei and what turning points mean in terms of the world of Mushoku Tensei, Rudeus and Orsted, and the ongoing Orsted vs Hitogami battle. The video starts out with a spoiler free section that is safe to watch if you are up to date on the anime, as it only covers Turning Points 1 and 2, before a warning to leave the video before the spoilers about other turning points from later in the light novel series begin.

      It's a genuine warning.
      Think on this: it would've taken him about a year to reach Begaritt and Elinalise bowed out because she can't separate herself from Cliff for that long.
      Roxy would've been dead for a year by the time he arrived.
      The party would be severely weakened compared to what it was in the book, without Elinalise and Roxy.
      They would've had no chance in even engaging the hydra.
      The mission would've failed and they would've all died in the attempt, should they take it.
      Hitogami would've had the time of his life ripping into the mourning Rudeus:
      "Look at you, having sped your way to Begaritt with thunder and bluster to save your mother and meet with your beloved teacher again while leaving your pregnant wife at home!
      And what did you get for ignoring my advice? Your teacher was already dead, you can't save your mother and your father sees you as a failure! All for nothing! Your child is all alone with her mother and your sisters, without a man in the house to protect them, and what a pathetic man he turned out to be!
      I told you you'd regret it, so aren't you regretting it now for being a failure of a student, a poor son, a horrid husband and a terrible father?"
      Hitogami couldn't see Nanahoshi instructing Rudeus in reaching Rapan that quickly. And as fate would have it, his reunion with Roxy was the worst possible outcome for that demiurge and his objective of avoiding being done in by Lara: Roxy immediately fell in love with Rudeus.
      With that, the next time they met, the regret he'd "implied" Rudeus would have gets covered with the bullshit take of Paul and Roxy having survived anyway.
      I don't buy it for a few reasons: 1) Rudeus brought with him the book that proved most helpful to them in navigating the labyrinth, speeding up their progress, 2) Rudeus reached Roxy at the very last moment, 3) they had trouble recruiting people anyway.
      So they wouldn't have found someone else to save Roxy, as she would've been dead; and the party would've been permanently kneecapped, reducing Paul's chances of survival further.

    It’s interesting how the mana incident truly caused irreversible damage that doesn’t seem likely to get better with time. The thing with turning point 2 is that the meeting definitely has a lot of uncertainty since Hitogami can’t predict Orsteds future and so doesn’t know how Rudy and him will get along in the future so Hitogami probably hoped they never met. A lot of the turning points are twists you really wouldn’t expect or wouldn’t be able to predict compared to many other twists. The gist of 3 should be part of the title for the sequel and number 5 looks like someone made a joke but took it too far

      Sylphy will likely be alive in K500-510. I wonder how the scene in the sequel will go where she meets the Rewind Miko? And hears she's the one who summoned Rudeus and Nanahoshi, and is therefore the one directly responsible for the Teleportation Incident.
      Sylphy was about to shred Nanahoshi to pieces with her magic when she heard her say she's the reason for the calamity. How big of a can of whoopass would Granny Sylphy bring out the moment she understands this?

    Thank you so much for your sharing of wisdom. While you mention the 5 turning points here, Rudeus, like all of us has faced minor turning points before. The turning point where Rudeus is perfectly comfortable living with Paul and his family until, lights out, enter Ghislaine and soon Eris. Had it not happened, Rudeus would have problems remained in closer contact with Sylvia and probably been effected far differently in the big world event placing him in far different direction. IRL we never know how each seemingly random event or decision will alter our lives and by how much. I believe the author has again done a magnificent job combining the IRL experiance with experience in this series. No decision or occurrence is predictable even by the "H" man. We live with our results, good or bad.

  • @pointathim

    See, what I enjoy the most about this story is that it feels as though each minor detail elevates the plot even further than the last. The teleportation incident, although a major plot point. was put on hold slightly to put more focus towards current events in the story. We kept getting small details and links that not only brought it back into the forefront but also increased our desire as readers to learn more about what the actual cause was. I am grateful to have read the light novel as well as read portions of the manga to see each different perspective of the story.

    Something that rereading the novel series has really opened my eyes to seeing was the turning points specifically have to do with Orsted vs Man-God, each turning point is in Orsteds favor, in which turning point 3 may seem less impactful, but if you realize it, it is the first time Rudy defies the Man-God

    • @julesandrewsusvilla4657
      @julesandrewsusvilla4657 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Turning Point 3 is impactful as you said when Rudy defied Hitogami, another thing to note is that Hitogami intended for Roxy to die at the dungeon but Rudeus changed that when he defied Hitogami and decided to save her. Had Roxy died, Lara wouldn't be born and there would be no destined hero to arrive in the world.

    • @Tounushi
      @Tounushi 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I've come to the conclusion that Nanahoshi is the common factor in all Turning Points, with her input serving as a direct disadvantage to Hitogami's future.
      TP1: She manifests in the world.
      TP2: She prompts Orsted to heal Rudeus
      TP3: She gives her teleportation ruin notebook to Rudeus, having him arrive just in time to save Roxy
      TP4: She assists Rudeus in ambushing Orsted, rather than have him go look for him for Roxy knows how long. Not that Hitogami would give him that long to look before moving in on the family, anyway.
      Sure, TP 3 and 4 take place up to weeks after the events of the chapters titled Turning Point, but since Nanahoshi and Rudeus are both wild cards in that world, the way things change has to revolve around them.

    • @Tounushi
      @Tounushi 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The effects of the Turning Points affect their plans, but they have no real input with them.
      Nanahoshi's input is what turns the tide.
      TP1: She manifests in the world; Orsted and Hitogami are confused.
      TP2: She prompts Orsted to heal Rudeus; Orsted goes with it, despite his apprehension at Rudeus being an apostle; Hitogami was blindsided, but his plans aren't affected.
      TP3: She gives her teleportation ruin notes to Rudeus so he can conduct his journey faster; Orsted isn't involved at all; Hitogami's plan of having Roxy killed is ruined, as well as his intentions of messing with Rudeus.
      TP4: She's given a glimpse of her own future that helps her cope with failure down the road, and she assists Rudeus in drawing in Orsted rather than him having to go seek him out; Orsted fights one of his toughest battles and recruits Rudeus to make use of his power and descendants; Hitogami's hail Mary of trying to fix what went wrong with TP3 fails due to time travel shenanigans, so he sics Rudeus against Orsted in the hopes that a) Orsted dies, b) Rudeus is out of the way or c) he can draw some other plans against Rudeus' family.

  • @Tounushi
    @Tounushi 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    How things lead to the Turning Points:
    -Turning Point 1:- unavoidable, cannot be explained at all without major spoilers well beyond vol15. First time Hitogami becomes aware of Rudeus; Orsted notices something's wrong; Nanahoshi is introduced into the world.
    Turning Point 2: Hitogami can't see Orsted's movements. Rudeus running into him was a fluke and Nanahoshi telling him to heal the boy is essentially on a whim.
    Turning Point 3: Hitogami knows Roxy will step on a trap in the dungeon and Rudeus can't reach her no matter what he decides. The letter was sent around the time when Sylphy rekindles her relationship with Rudeus. The journey would've taken over a year, making sure Rudeus can't reach Roxy; also he'd miss the birth of his child, leaving both her and Sylphy vulnerable; and if he would likely have perished in the attempt at saving Zenith. Hitogami advices Rudeus to follow his base desires; as long as Roxy's out of the picture, it's fine to continue to watch him bungle through life. Hitogami could not predict Nanahoshi giving Rudeus the info on teleportation circles, invalidating Hitogami's plans.
    Hitogami telling Rudeus Roxy and Paul would've survived counts as bullshit IMHO. Roxy was mere seconds away from death and it was the earliest moment anyone could've reached her.
    Turning Point 4: Dark Future would have inevitably unfolded. Oldeus appearing is a total black swan event. Hitogami is essentially driven into a corner and gives Rudeus trivia that might get the Dragon God's attention when they fight in the assassination he orders Rudeus to perform, so if Rudeus wins, Orsted is out of Hitogami's (proverbial) hair, and if Orsted wins, he'll likely end up killing Rudeus' wives as well. However, he can't tell what Orsted says or does, nor can he predict what he'd do based on this new information. Nor could he see Nanahoshi expediting the culmination of the event either, as her cooperation allowed Rudeus to ambush the Dragon God at a time and place of his choosing rather than seeking him out on a quest that could've taken months if not years.

    The madlad did it! She finally covered it! And yea, how the author did the turning points to mean different things from different perspectives is wonderful. My thoughts on one of the turning points (spoilers, both for MT as well as Steins;Gate, to the poor souls who still haven't watched that yet):
    Rifujin-san had made one of the best stories I've ever read in my opinion, just for the fact that it's one of the few stories that would bring me back to read the LN/WNs all over again since 2016. That being said, I would've thought that the Oldeus scene was just a means of a draft in the WN to move the story forward and not be used in the LN, just because it just feels too forced to bring a change of pace to the story as compared to the rest of the plot points - a deux ex machina if you will. The author alluded through Rudeus that something like this might happen with a Steins;Gate reference, to give some hints that the story was taking place in the "Steins Gate worldline", where Rudeus and Nanahoshi became an anomaly in one of the worldlines that Orsted was experiencing in the story, and Oldeus was the Rudeus in the beta worldline giving a message to the current Rudeus alluding to "Operation Skuld".
    Now, Steins;Gate is also one of the best stories I've ever watched as well in my opinion, but the final scene in S;G worked well even though it's a similar deus ex machina plot as well is because that happened at the end of the anime/VN, to bring a closure to a story that brought pain and suffering to Okabe. In the context of the VN, it's built as a satisfying ending after multiple trials and error finding the flags needed to the true ending (assuming you don't use a walkthrough). And that's the problem having that plot point being written in Mushoku Tensei - the story hasn't ended yet after that, so it gives a feeling of a forced event just to move the story forward.
    I had hoped that he changed it to something that is less forced, but after seeing volume 14 came out, I just resigned to the fate that it is sealed as one of the weakest plot narratives of MT, at least to me. Granted, to give the same impact to the story as it is right now, but with better narrative, is something that I still have yet to figure out, so perhaps the author thought so too and just left it as is.
    (Added)
    Oh, also wanted to point out the differences between MT and S;G in terms of how they handle singularities of events. S;G handles them as inevitabilities within a set of worldlines, while MT deals with it as probabilities, and that the probability of an event significantly goes up as you intervene in certain events like Norn marrying Ruijerd, or Hitogami screwed things up like with the event with Pax and Shirone Kingdom becoming a republic and resulting in a higher probability that Laplace be reincarnated there.

      Well, that part of the light novels has been out for ages in Japanese, and people who've read the Japanese would definitely have told us if something as major as Turning Point 4 was changed. Personally I think it's fine as it is - yes, it does give me a massive headache trying to figure out how the Oldeus timeline fits in to all the time loop stuff already established, given it seems to be true time travel rather than a time reset (given Orsted's loops we can assume reset the world like Subaru in Re:Zero, rather than traveling back in time, but Oldeus seems to have just traveled back by himself, so does the time he came from still exist?), but I think it's cool enough as a twist to deserve to be in the story. I don't think it needs to be as well thought out and executed as Steins;Gate because it's not a central mechanic of the story, and the fantasy setting makes it kind of an affordance that we can just handwave that time travel magic is possible but difficult, but certainly, I can see why some people might find it a bit clunky.

    Here's my take on Rudeus' Hitogami dreams (spoilers for anime-only):
    Regarding Rudeus' hitogami dreams, I wonder if all the dreams that he's had so far, even before the labyrinth incident, were Hitogami's attempts at dissolving the future relationship between Rudeus and Roxy.
    What if when Hitogami told Rudeus to accept Ruijerd's help in crossing the demon continent stopped Rudeus from building up a reputation based on his name (instead of the superficial 'Dead End') which would result in them meeting up with Roxy much earlier?
    What if when Hitogami told Rudeus to meet Kishirika (demon empress), Hitogami actually intended on separating Rudeus from Ruijerd and Eris so that when Roxy ran into them, she wouldn't meet Rudeus? This would also explain how they ended up with the comically unlikely situation of them missing each other while residing in the same city.

      Rudeus getting the demon eye also served in getting him to Shirone as well as overall increasing his survival odds. In Shirone, Rudeus' rescue stunt destabilized Pax's mental state as well as his position in the court, weakening a future where he'd take over and create a republic where Laplace would be born.
      In the end Hitogami's delaying actions were only stretching a rubber band. By the time Rudeus met his teacher again, he'd become a man who perfectly matched the criteria of her ideal romantic partner and the scenario that played out matched her fantasy of finding love with every individual clause fulfilled. To. The. Letter.
      1) "She would bump into someone who was tall, manly and fashionably dressed; a young human man with a youthful appeal " By age 16, Rudeus had taken care to strengthen his body, he had Zeniths' and Paul's genes (which he'd already passed on), he wore the cloak selected for him by Sylphy (who'd gotten accustomed to the tastes of royals), and he's still an otaku to the core with his antics.
      2) "In the depths of a labyrinth he would save her" Rudeus literally goes through grey stone to reach her once he noticed her presence and saves her from immediate mortal peril.
      3) "The two of them would combine their strengths to make their escape and their love would bud and blossom" Rudeus joins the party Roxy's already part of and works closely with her, her interest in him blatantly apparent to all but him. He's looked up to her for so long, she's become his emotional foundation.
      4) "The youth would discover one of his friends had died, and she would comfort him. That would be their first night." Paul dies. Rudeus is left in his deepest depression yet, to the point of slowly starving himself to death in his despondency. Roxy brings herself to him and directly propositions him, rousing his interest in feeling the heartbeat and touch of this woman he's spent over a decade worshiping as a god. He regains combat-effective focus the next day after realizing how badly he's messed up.
      What came after is that Rudeus realized he not only respects and worships Roxy, he also loves her; and Roxy confessed her love to him, crying at the idea of him already being taken and nobody telling her, and that she'd missed the bus of having the man she'd fantasized over for decades. Elinalise gives the final push and her granddaughter gives her approval for their relationship.
      For Hitogami to interfere in them having Lara, he had to take extra steps. Plan A was to indefinitely delay their meeting and get either of them eventually killed; I believe TP2 prevented this or it was Hitogami's chance for Rudeus to die. Plan B would've been the labyrinth, but Nanahoshi's teleportation guidebook kiboshed that. Plan C was the rat. Plan D was to get her in the splash zone of Orsted's rampage against Rudeus and his allies. After that it's dice rolls against Lara, which for all intents and purposes was past the point of no return.

    Turning Point 4 is where everything goes wrong for Hitogami, also. Everything he does goes to rubbish after that. Hitogami lost his best asset when Oldeus outsmarted him. Every other apostle came up short. Just my opinion but when Hitogami failed to dispatch Roxy, it was all downhill.

    • @Tounushi
      @Tounushi 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      TP1 raised alarm bells that something's gone wrong and that there are new wild cards on the table.
      TP2 was a surprise, but not too much of an upset for his plans yet.
      TP3 was supposed to be a done deal, but Orsted's apprentice screwed that up. Roxy WOULD have died in the labyrinth if Rudeus hadn't gotten that teleportation circle location.
      TP4 indeed is where it all went wrong. Once Lara was born, his fate was all but sealed.
      But the deal with fate in the setting is that it's not absolute. It's just a very high probability. Hitogami's playing at worse and worse odds, so he'll fight harder and harder to maximize his chances of winning and surviving. Problem for him is, he's ill-equipped with gathering loyalty or predicting movements. He's like an ill-tempered child playing at a grand strategy game with his walkthrough taken away. Even his best effort against Rudeus was trying to herd a bunch of egotists with their own ideals and agendas; he didn't even understand that he'd needed them on the same page.

This is a man who has everything to lose who's only thought is to protect his family, his wives and kids, This man throws the balls to the walls basically makes an iron man suit to fight Orsted. their fight basically destroys half of the forest and still its not enough. At the very end RUdy loses both his arms and even then the man still struggles to fight even crawling to fight on. He begs for their lives to protect his family even if he dies. Well that's quite a bit to unpack lol. It's really developing into a increasingly detailed and almost realistic story, ironically. Characters, especially the main protagonist, are very often in situations where they could die and it doesn't often feel forced by plot armor. Gotta hate it when shit gets fucky.. well.. depends on the context and how creative the people involved are, I suppose lol
    Spoilers:
    I've always disliked the monkey man, even though my mother often regarded me as one during my younger years. Now I have a solid why. I wonder if it ever gets explained why peeps sided with the characters they did, and he's a curious one. I guess it could always be as simple as hitogami's ability to make people naturally trust him but that's probly better off being used as a way to move the smaller pawns and people who don't know him yet. Will be cool to see the battle between Rudy and Orsted though, if it gets animated. I do love the dynamic that's being setup though. Hitogami is really pushing his limits and Rudy gets put in tough positions because of it. When the series creates these kinda "lose/lose" situations where characters have to decide the lesser of 2 evils or question their moral positions, it makes them way more relatable. Even the godly and antagonistic characters. Thanks for the videos! Can't wait for the next one!

    its amazing think about it for a moment the brilliants he could have done made hitigami can grant him important or etc super op powers but what he did is giving wisdom for me personally such things have more impact [personal reasons XD] like the power of information
    it changed rudi so much like how he first met and not just him but everyone around him bec of him trusting that man he also get a chance to changed his blood lines curse
    i really love the butterfly effect feel X3
    and your right about the meting of ostis really focus on them
    and you bring up a good point for both iris wants to get stronger
    but what you said about rudi made me think this also how it started his greater doudts of the guy who been giving him advice i feel like this metting also bring him to a thought is he really to be trusted if there is someone who just came and kill any one related to him and yet same time save his life XD the echo woah
    0-0 mmmm turning points there many ways to view it XD and this by your words make me think the author realllly put it in the firing pan XD
    to think its focus was ostic vs hitigami
    nice name and I NEW IT THERE IS SOME HOLES in his power bec why cant he see the old man!
    did you just say rick and mothy XD oh my now i got to say that is going to messy mind
    0-0 ARE YOU KIDDING ME XD DARN YOU BRILLIANT AUTHOR I DIDNT SEE THAT COMING I LOVED THAT GUY AND HIS THE FINAL BOSS!!!! I AM GASHPING HERE WOW WHAT A TWIST!!

    I always forgot where Turning Point 3 was because, as you stated, the effects aren't immediate. The first 2 were incredibly easy to remember and 4 doesn't really need to be stated.
    Fuck hitogami

    Hey Natalie, this may be kind of random, as I'm not sure where to say this, but... you think you'd ever want to cover the massive and complex When They Cry series, like Higurashi and Umineko? :p
    I mean, for Re:Zero, aside from being similar to other isekai animes like The Rising of the Shield Hero, or Time Travel/Death ones like Erased, I figured the Witches of Sin are a lot like the Witches from Umineko in a way, and that you'd love plots like that, and the interesting psychological disorders some of the characters have, even when some of them are the protagonists, just like with Re:Zero. :p
    (Also, I don't know you or another youtuber want to do more Hot Takes on Noralities or not, but apparently she's still making new content and made a video about Howl's Moving Castle and stuff, if you want to check her out. :p).

    • @NatalieXHunter
      @NatalieXHunter  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did actually do some playthroughs of the first Higurashi VN back when my channel was new, but it wasn't a style of content that really worked for me. If I do ever cover the franchise (which I might) it'll be after I've played through it all, though, as it's a bit too deep for me to just want to do anime only content about it.
      As for Noralities, I only did responses to her hot takes - since the Dragon Maid stuff she's mostly just been covering Ghibli movies and magical girl shows which honestly are not my area of interest when it comes to anime. It's not like some thing where we all just want to rip apart everything she says whenever she makes a video, so unless she comes out with something really wild again I doubt people will be responding to her again. Though, can you imagine if she watched Mushoku Tensei?

      @@NatalieXHunter Ahh, I see...
      You know, whether or not I can relate to your tastes myself or even know what anime it is your talking about here, I have to say, you're a really nice or at least really chill and level headed person, that it's nice to leave comments sometimes and simply see you heart my comments, or possibly even reply to them. :p You're one of the only youtubers to do something like that... and when it's you in particular, it feels like it actually means something though, and it feels more thoughtful. :?
      Anyways, yeah, When They Cry is pretty deep, but I mean, I figured since some of your vids are hours long and Re:Zero is a pretty big and complex thing, that if you were ever to run out of content, that could be something that you should check out. ^^;
      And for Noralities, well... maybe critiquing all of her videos is a bit too mean-spirited... but for her seemingly biased videos, she seems a bit self-righteous at times, doesn't she? :p So defending some kind of viewpoint or other and going against her instead doesn't exactly seem wrong either... I guess everything that needed to be said has already been said though and now she should be left alone, maybe...
      As for magical girl type stuff, well... Some things may be a bit deeper or mature than others, but I think even the fluffier stuff can have it's surprisingly profound moments too. :p I try to see the best in all genres of works usually, except when I don't and I try and I find myself not liking it despite myself, even if it's popular. :?

    • @NatalieXHunter
      @NatalieXHunter  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, I wasn't saying I didn't like magical girls, just that it's not a genre I have any particular knowledge of to be talking about in a video, iykwim. I don't know much about long running shounen either, so you never see me making videos about someone's hot takes about Naruto or One Piece. So, I'm not about to criticize Noralities for not knowing anything about isekai and weighing in anyway, then go and do the same thing about a genre she knows more about than I do!

    Spoiler warning
    What I love about the turning points in MT are that they can mean two different things
    1. Major shifts in tone and/or character development
    2. Big events that will lead to the end of Hitogami
    To be more exact on 2,
    TP 1 is the first time the teleportation disaster happens in any timeline and it brings Nanahoshi into the world who will later on help her bf who goes on to aid in the defeat of Hitogami.
    TP 2 is the meeting between Rudy and Orsted, as we already know, Rudy helps defeat the apostles that Hitogami has to hinder Orsted. This encounter was the beginning of their close relationship which would lead to the downfall of Hitogami
    TP 3 is the connection made between Roxy and Rudy. Tho not as major on the surface as the others, these two getting together would mean the birth of Lara, the hero, who would be one of the main people to oppose Hitogami
    TP 4 was steering Rudy away from the miserable life he was going to lead. Had he opened the door, he wouldn't have become Orsted's partner and it would've meant the death of Roxy before Lara was born.

      I've been trying to examine the different ways of how the Turning Points go, and it's hard to get a single through-line through all of them. If we're willing to stretch the definition where the Turning Point itself actually is, I've come up with Nanahoshi being the common denominator:
      TP1: She emerges into the world
      TP2: She asks Orsted to heal Rudeus
      TP3: She gives Rudeus the locations and passwords to the teleportation circles, allowing him to reach Rapan and rescue Roxy at the very last second, fulfilling her fantasy to the letter, making her fall in love with him.
      TP4: She arranges the lure for Orsted, who hears of Hitogami's fear and decides to recruit Rudeus or take his children if he resists.
      By stretching I mean taking TP3 and 4 and applying the *actual* turning point to where Nanahoshi influences it, rather than what happens in the chapters themselves
      TP1: Teleportation Incident. Direct association: Nanahoshi emerges from it.
      TP2: Dead End fights Orsted. Direct association: Nanahoshi is with him.
      TP3: Rudeus receives the request for assistance from Geese. Indirect association: Nanahoshi completely readjusts Rudeus' travel plans.
      TP4: Dark future Rudeus prevents the dark future from taking place. Indirect association: Nanahoshi is consulted as per his advice, she figures out things about her own circumstances, which lead to her preparing for her teleportation experiment failing, therefore preserving her life; in addition she assists in Rudeus setting up his encounter with Orsted in a time and place of his choosing.
