Acquafaba is a good substitute to egg white, but usually only in dishes where you need to beat egg whites stiff. The yolk it's almost impossible to substitute because it's mainly fat and it has a crazy good flavor.
The almond milk is not the issue; you can make a roux with it as easily as any dairy milk, and seasoning is what makes a sauce. What I can't get over is that the almond milk appears to be VANILLA rather than unsweetened and unflavored.
A little bit of cashew milk and coconut oil can make for OK mashed potatoes, not as good as real milk + butter, but it's edible. It's not something I would make, but I've had it from a vegan who can actually make decent food.

4:35 she said mashed potatoes aren’t vegan because some people use butter/ cooking cream to give it that velvety texture that you can’t get from regular mashed potatoes (unless you are a wizard or a witch)
I’ll explain the mashed potatoes issue. Every mashed potato recipe I’m familiar with uses some form of dairy derived cream. With dairy being an animal product, it’s not compatible with a vegan diet.
@@MaddoxEzman You just want some kind of fat and liquid, the fat basically makes the potatoes creamy and the liquid is to make the mash not too dry. You can use vegan butter/margarine and milk alternatives, you can also just use oil for the fat and water or broth for the liquid (using some of the water the potatoes were boiled in is a good idea) or even omit the liquid entirely (depending on amount of fat used, liquid already in the potatoes and your desired consistency). My sister is vegan and all she does with her mashed potato is adds some of her vegan margarine with no extra liquid, comes out just fine.
Okay, I love Kay. She seems like she's probably one of the sweetest ladies you'd ever meet. But I gotta say, in some her intros, she sounds like she's at deaths door. 5:45
My guess for why Kay said that the mashed potatoes wouldn’t made the meal vegan is due to the fact that you have to use milk to get the right consistency. Then again she could have used some other type of milk that would be vegan so maybe she IS having a pig mash her potatoes for her after all…
I think that the reason that Kay said that the mashed potato would make it not vegan is because most good mashed potatoes have an amount of butter, you can make it without but generally they don't taste quite as good. Idk if that is what she meant though
@@cookingwithtabitha Some margarines still contain dairy and thus aren't vegan. Also this is Kay, chances are she didn't consider vegan friendly alternatives for butter and milk for making mashed potato.
4:05 It's so stupid because it is literally tasting like a normal bacon. It has same +/- 5% Kcal score (depends on the brand), it has less protein and much more fats. I wonder how the "Vegan" bacon can be more healthy than the normal one. Bacon is totally unhealthy on it's own. It's usually very little of meat with tons of salt that makes you reach for the another and another piece. The Vegan bacon is mostly salt with some other spices, including artificial real meat taste. Soooo, yeah. 99% of the "vegans" is just following the trend.
Jesus Christ.. forget about the food she's making and look at that pan! 1:41 Uncle Roger will cry tears of blood 😶 And wtf did she do with the spaghetti??! *HAIYAAA* it's fucking terrible, she's making my Italian brothers and sisters cry.
I definitely had a few vegan burger patties and even fish replacement who came suuuper close tastewise. It depends so damn hard on the seasoning. Most people use butter in their mashed potatoes to make it smoother. Margarine is also an option but it taste less nice.
@@probablynot2123 Totally. My grandma puts a splash of chicken broth in them too... but still it sounds hilarious to say, "I didn't mash this because then it wouldn't be vegan."
@@probablynot2123 ohhh ok, see that makes sense i was taking it quite literally. the thought of the physical state of the potato being the determinant for vegan approval cracked me up!!!
4:55 some people do mashed potatoes with milk/cream, probably Katie do the same and that's why she said that they would be not vegan if they would be mashed, Im guessing but it might be a reason
Normal carbonara: sear the bacon, put cooked pasta in the pan, turn off the heat and gently mix in the egg and cheese before it leaves the pan so the egg is creamy and the pasta is saucy Kay’s carbonara: gently warm up the bacon, fry the egg substitute until it disappears, add vanilla almond milk, and dump it on unsauced pasta like a baby vomited on it
There's genuinely amazing meat replacements out there. I prefer some of them to meat for their better taste and consistent texture. Too bad they cost like thrice the amount of actual facotry-meat, but it probably doesn't kill you as quickly.
@@Anarchist_Angel Your ancestors thrived through meat eating, processed vegan garbage is not going to be good for you. You are an omnivore by nature and that is how you should structure your diet.
@@Anarchist_Angelsome of them can actually kill you quicker with the amount of fat, salt and sugar added to make the texture and flavour similar to meat
Idk if anyone has mentioned this yet but just in case: Mashed potatoes aren't typically vegan (although they are vegan adaptable), because they contain milk and sometimes cheese. Milk is a must to get the creamy consistency, even if you like 'em chunky, because it creams up the starch, and cheese is always a good idea to make it more rich. Vegan mashed potatoes can be made with melty vegan cheese and either a neutral tasting or complementary flavored plant based milk, such as unsweetened oat or almond. Heck you can even use barista oat or unsweetened plant based whipping cream alternatives. I am a lactose intolerant European so I use unsweetened oat/rye/hemp milk and "Universal Schlagfix", both the sweet red one and the red and blue universal one are great imo since there's hardly any strong soy taste. You can spice it up with some vegetarian or vegan parmesan (i think it's just called "Grate me!" here due to parm being a protected term). You're welcome.
4:33 I think what she meant by this was some people (like my mom) put milk and butter in mashed potatoes to make them taste better and to make them more creamy. Maybe Kay also does that.

@@MaddoxEzman Matthew beat me to it.
My sister is vegan and all she does with her mashed potato is adds some of her vegan margarine with no extra liquid, comes out just fine.
the bad part is that the sausage/bacon meal was one of kay's most appetizing looking meals
God bless her son, he's so supportive 😄
She is so cute trying her best, I see. August is being cruel ;( Maybe she have meat restrictions?
@@alliune6266 well don't know about that because she kinda annoys me ngl so we are not in the same team
I wonder where the line between "supportive" and "enabling" is drawn.
That cut up bacon looks exactly like the Beggin' Strips dog treats. Spot on.
People tend to put some sort of dairy product in their mash to make it more creamy
Kay is an international treasure.
That bacon reminds me of Fruit Stripe chewing gum.
I want you to know I listen to you when I play a boring game so I'll hear snippets of what is happening and be like "...what-"
It spices things up.
Mashed potatoes typically use butter and cream
That "bacon" looks exactly like inserts for shoes.
In the UK is common to put butter and milk in mashed potato
I've had mashed potatoes with and without those ingredients here in the US.
8:02 Isn’t that _vanilla_ almond milk?
yes. yes, it is.
Okay, I love Kay. She seems like she's probably one of the sweetest ladies you'd ever meet. But I gotta say, in some her intros, she sounds like she's at deaths door. 5:45
Has no one else noticed that she used vanilla almond milk? God bless this woman, keep her safe no matter what!
8:04 "Alm, alm - I can't even say it"; yeah, Kay you can't COOK either...🤣🤣🤣
My guess for why Kay said that the mashed potatoes wouldn’t made the meal vegan is due to the fact that you have to use milk to get the right consistency. Then again she could have used some other type of milk that would be vegan so maybe she IS having a pig mash her potatoes for her after all…
I feel like one day that vegan teacher will come to watch Kay’s cooking vegan food but still cry
Want some bean crocks?
I’m 100% sure that Kay was holding that guy at gun point while he was doing the taste test
That's her son. But i agree with you.
4:58 his face was like "ooooff... this $h!t"
I think because a lot of people put milk or butter in their mashed potatoes is why she said that. Is my best guess anyways.
I think that the reason that Kay said that the mashed potato would make it not vegan is because most good mashed potatoes have an amount of butter, you can make it without but generally they don't taste quite as good.
Idk if that is what she meant though
MARGARINE processed oil butter substitute which isn't terrible when making mashed potatoes
@@melrobertson2743 yea I was going to say why couldn't she just use margarine? I've done it and it's good.
@@cookingwithtabitha Some margarines still contain dairy and thus aren't vegan. Also this is Kay, chances are she didn't consider vegan friendly alternatives for butter and milk for making mashed potato.
Vegan butter is an option
At least we can respect the fact that she actually cooks the food unlike Jack.
Usually too much. Polar opposites
0:11 HERES THE SUS!
I can finally watch this. I was sick to my stomach when it came out last week, and I didn't think that Kay's cooking would help.
One of these days, Kay is going to say hello to August in her video and make him feel bad 😅
Jesus Christ.. forget about the food she's making and look at that pan! 1:41 Uncle Roger will cry tears of blood 😶
And wtf did she do with the spaghetti??! *HAIYAAA* it's fucking terrible, she's making my Italian brothers and sisters cry.
THE PART WHEN SHE COULDNT PRONOUNCE ALMOND WAS SO FUNNY 💀💀
I definitely had a few vegan burger patties and even fish replacement who came suuuper close tastewise.
It depends so damn hard on the seasoning.
Most people use butter in their mashed potatoes to make it smoother. Margarine is also an option but it taste less nice.
kay saying that the potatoes are boiled not mashed to keep it vegan is blowing my mind right now. i’m crying
I think it’s bc most mashed potatoes have butter and milk in them
@@probablynot2123 Totally. My grandma puts a splash of chicken broth in them too... but still it sounds hilarious to say, "I didn't mash this because then it wouldn't be vegan."
@@justwaiting5744 Wtf, chicken broth would be sooo good I feel like
@@probablynot2123 It is
@@probablynot2123 ohhh ok, see that makes sense i was taking it quite literally. the thought of the physical state of the potato being the determinant for vegan approval cracked me up!!!
Legend says she still try’s to take a English lesson learning how to pronounce almond
Lol 😂
4:55 some people do mashed potatoes with milk/cream, probably Katie do the same and that's why she said that they would be not vegan if they would be mashed, Im guessing but it might be a reason
Kay can’t still pronounce almond in 55 years
Crocks with beans
The vegan bacon she bought looks like something you make with the playdoh factory
Normal carbonara: sear the bacon, put cooked pasta in the pan, turn off the heat and gently mix in the egg and cheese before it leaves the pan so the egg is creamy and the pasta is saucy
Kay’s carbonara: gently warm up the bacon, fry the egg substitute until it disappears, add vanilla almond milk, and dump it on unsauced pasta like a baby vomited on it
all these vegan meat substitutes are already a crime again humanity, but Kay's vanilla flavored vegan "carbonara" is truly something special.
There's genuinely amazing meat replacements out there. I prefer some of them to meat for their better taste and consistent texture. Too bad they cost like thrice the amount of actual facotry-meat, but it probably doesn't kill you as quickly.
@@Anarchist_Angel Everything slowly kills you, not just meat
Meat substitutes are great. Crimes are killing animals. And I'm not even vegan
Dude I remember when MoistCritical was covering some of her cooking. Good to see she's still at it 👌
I can't thank you enough for learning Kay from you.
Greetings from Greece,we appreciate her cooking here too🤜🤛👌
Idk if anyone has mentioned this yet but just in case:
Mashed potatoes aren't typically vegan (although they are vegan adaptable), because they contain milk and sometimes cheese.
"The only thing greater than her cooking..."
Me: Lee's stomach for surviving her cooking.
5:36 waiting for someone too get r/whoosh-ed
i got r/woosh-ed
09:54 Then tries to tell you it tastes good hahaha
i love kay she's so sweet but her cooking is nasty 💀
lee is held at gun point.
4:33 I think what she meant by this was some people (like my mom) put milk and butter in mashed potatoes to make them taste better and to make them more creamy. Maybe Kay also does that.
She switched to vegan bc she cant cook anything else😂. Wait, she still messed it up..
Now I want to make an almond milk spaghetti recipe just to be a contrarian
Honestly you could pull off a pseudo-alfredo sauce.... maybe
Especially since she used a vanilla flavored almond milk.
"the potatoes are not mashed because it's a Vegan meal" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 you got to love Kay🤣
Maybe she usualy add cream or stock
@@MimeHTF5 Yeah, cream and or butter are usually something added to smoothen mashed taters
in the uk we tend to use butter and milk in are mash even cream if ya feeling fancy. hope that helps the vegan mash issue
For your information a lot of vegan meats, people say aren’t good, but you have to find ones that are good because there are quite a lot
