Mr. Guggenheim was actually offered a seat in a lifeboat, but he refused because he didn't want any women or children to die on his watch. A true gentleman indeed.

@@travelmind5487 think it’s harsh to call him a fool. Not saying you are wrong on the fact. If he got in a lifeboat he would not of been taking someone else’s seat. Maybe he was a bit naive to think that. But in that situation would be hard to know what is the right call to make. And wasn’t like they had time to weight up the pros and cons of getting into a lifeboat. He made his call on a moral reason. And if he was right or wrong shouldn’t matter. As his decision was one from the heart. And should be respected as was honourable. But not going to lie. I am get a feeling your one that hates the rich. So want to find fault in anything the extremely successful do.
When I was a kid, I thought Mr. Guggenheim was a goofball who didn’t realize the ship was sinking and thought it was some kind of party going on.
Today as an adult, I understand this moment now and have mad respect for him for accepting his fate.

If I’m in a situation where I know my fate is sealed, I’d want to go out as a gentleman as well and die on my terms.
Exactly the same thing with me. I always thought he just didn’t know that the boat was sinking. Now that I have seen this movie again a few months ago, I’ve realized how badass Mr. Guggenheim is for knowing this is most likely his end so why not go out like gentlemen on schedule.
One of his quote was "no women shall be left aboard this ship because ben guggenheim is a coward" that's such a bad ass line where it tells us that he really accepted his fate
To add to this (because I just listened to a podcast about his family). Because he was in 1st class he was guaranteed a seat in a boat. But when he found out there were woman and children being left behind so he could get a seat, he went back to his room, got dressed in his best tuxedo and decidedly go down with the ship.

In another scene later you see him shitting his pants after he'd seen the water coming through the rooms.
The guy looking for his dog was John Astor, now he was a true gentle man, after saving his wife he went to look for his dogs to free them from the cages. Unfortunately he died trying to save them

The wealthiest man onboard the ship, and he chose to die with the others over a glass of scotch. He could've easily tried to buy his way into a lifeboat like Cal but did not. A man of true class.
It was the wealthiest man on the ship, JJ Astor, who had enough heart to release the dogs from their kennels to give them a chance to survive.
Susie Q Sadly the dogs more than likely drowned because obviously dogs don’t have brains like we have. Sure dogs are intelligent but they are blind when it comes to danger and those on Titanic had no idea the ship was sinking or where to go.

Apparently many of the dogs ran up and down the ship in excitement while it was sinking.
There was also a futile attempt to save the mail in the mail room too.

The movie condensed it, but it’s proof Guggenheim went down with courage.
That's why men get paid more than women, because on a sinking ship, women and children get preferential treatment and are allowed to get off the ship first. So the extra money men get paid more than women is compensation for things like that

Legend says that when Titanic was sinking Benjamin and Victor (his black servant) were sitting on deck chairs, smoking cigar and drinking brandy.

The look on Astor's face when he sighs tiredly, with resignation, and glances up...says it all. This is a powerful scene, showing how two super-rich Edwardian men might have stoically faced death.
Ironically, the actor of John Jacob Astor in this movie was a real life survivor of the deadliest maritime disaster in history known as the Wilhelm Gustloff.

@@TheWriterWalker His name is Eric Braeden. He was an infant around 3 years old when the Wilhelm Gustloff sank. It was a German military ship that was evacuating over 10,000 civilians. I'm surprised he even survived considering around 5,000 children died on that voyage.
@@TheWriterWalker The Wilhelm Gustloff is possibly one of, if not THE deadliest, maritime disasters in history. It is largely forgotten due to the fact it took place during wartime and the ship was evacuating high-profile Nazis and their families.

John Astor had a seat in a lifeboat next to his wife, but a young boy- (he was an unaccompanied minor in 3rd class with his sister) talks about how John got up from the lifeboat and picked him up and placed the boy in the lifeboat next to his pregnant wife after kissing her goodbye.
Then another boy remarked how he didn’t want to get in the lifeboat because his puppy couldn’t go. He says John Astor took the puppy and told him that he’d look after it. These are just two survivors stories of how Astor really was a true gentleman up until he died. Truly, he sacrificed his life.
I could not imagine I would be that calm and gracious facing my death 😔 crazy what rich people were like when they were expected to have superior morals and class.

That line Astor says about looking for his dog is one of those little historical Easter eggs. He and Madeleine loved that dog so much but it unfortunately died too. It was a female Airedale named Kitty.

this 40 second clip sais so much about the sinking.....the steward who could be saving himself but hes still on duty offering lifebelts. guggeinheim who has decided to dress in his best and go down like a gentleman. his servant who knows his employment is over but remains loyal remains at his side in his best. Astor who put his wife Madeline in a boat and gave her his gloves and then went looking for her dog. the two richest men in the world sharing a final exchange. astor sighing as he look up at the grand staircase realizing all this beauty is over....and the hint of the music the band is playing outside and we all know their story. what a beautiful clip. i dont know why it was cut. in a 3 hour movie it would have been worth to include this.

@@kyuel09 is was a women and children first call for the lifeboats. Some men made it on, but not nearly as many. And it wasn't w & c priority, it was treated as w & c only.
I believe it was cut because too much development of the side story about Astor’s dog, it was deleted among few other clips where Astors dog were included
Because most people wouldn’t find this as interesting as a rich teenage girl, having sex with some hobo that she met on a boat 2 days ago.
It's a solid scene, all things considered, but even great scenes are cut from the final edits due to pacing, meandering on subplots, or needing to keep narrative cohesion. For a 3-hour movie to work as well as Titanic, I'm sure there were at least a handful of good scenes that had to be cut for the sake of the whole film to keep moving at a solid pace.
For the Titanic passengers, that night was the day of final judgment. His last moments and they knew it.
In these situations, people show their true nature. Nobody wanted to die. It is very easy to lose your head.
To not worry about everything, and try to survive at all costs.
They all had their illusions, projects, dreams and will to live.
Despite all this, they chose to live their last moments with dignity, they showed their courage, honour and gentleman.
Just like Isidor Strauss did, Thomas Andrews, and many others.

The depiction of Thomas Andrews is actually inaccurate in his last moments. He was in the smoking lounge at roughly 1:40 staring at the painting of Belfast Harbor and ignored the steward who asked if he was going to make a go for it.
Minutes later other survivors stated they saw Thomas Andrews throwing deck chairs and any other floatable items overboard to help the people in the sea.
The survivors on that overturned lifeboat said they saw Thomas Andrews meet with Captain Smith on the bridge at roughly 2:05. When the water started entering the bridge, they both left it and tried to get that last life boat down but we're both overtaken by a wave and taken to sea.

When he was three years old, Braeden survived the sinking of the German transport Wilhelm Gustloff, which is the deadliest sinking of a ship in history. The former cruise ship was torpedoed and sunk by a Russian submarine in the Baltic Sea on January 30, 1945, killing an estimated 9,400 people.

In real life Astor the wealthiest dude on the titanic who would have been worth billions in today's money gave up his own seat on a lifeboat with his wife so 2 children could get in the boat
I had read that Astor actually asked Lightoller if he could go with his wife to protect her (since she was young and was pregnant), but he refused and Astor told is wife he would see her in the morning (which unfortunately did not happen). To me, it seems like he had a will to survive, but he was still probably very brave that night.

They should air the Titanic in theaters across the country on April 14 every year - the full version, with all the deleted scenes. It'd be long, but it'd be epic.

Mr Guggenheim could have decided to try and get into a boat or save himself as a First Class passenger. Instead he gave up any spot he may have had in a boat. He sealed his place in history as an honorable man.

People like Benjamin Guigiham were true heros. Sure people like him were snobbish all because they were rich but they sacrifced themselves to let others especially women escape rather than go on a lifeboat when given the chance.

In my opinion they were most likely highly intelligent persons and as the events unfolded, they understood that it was a murder attempt, and they were the targets. All the propaganda about this unsinkable ship, JP Morgan and his friends cancelling at the last minute their presence on the ship, and the ennemis they made via their opposition to the creation of the Federal Reserve and the coming war. They probably worked it out real quick that the rest of the banksters have colluded against them, and that their fate is sealed as the others masters of the world want them dead.

Chris - Astor was the only person on board who thought enough to release the dogs from their kennels and give them a chance. That makes him OK by dog lovers like me. :)
Because historically he was actually searching for his dog which had been apart of the Astor family for a lot of years. The dog was named Kitty and his wife was especially attached to it. They nearly lost the dog in Egypt only a few years before.
Honestly, I'd rather watch portrayals of actual people and actual events of that fateful night as opposed to a cheesy, made-up love story; They should not have cut any of these more historically accurate scenes. Such a shame! They abandoned the chance to educate millions of people.
I think this line was delivered more seriously. It was a sacrifice of his life, and a statement of dignity.

Mr. Guggenheim was dressed in his best and went down as a gentleman, if you look at the scene when the ship is flooding it shows his shocked face and he's holding a glass of brandy as he requested, I love the details in this film!

Thank you for sharing that! I just watched this scene for the very first time and the brandy line piqued my interest, and I couldn't figure out why! Now it makes complete sense it was improvised.

Fun Fact: Guggenheim and Astor (and also Straus) were among the most outspoken and influencial opponents to the creation of the Federal Reserve System. If that ship hadn't sunk, the world today would not be the same. Not necessarily a better one though, as some will tell you.

Guggenheim was one of the most wealthiest men on the ship, he was gleefully offered a spot on a lifeboat as a VIP first thing, but as a real man he knew to not only give up his seat without any fear, he made a show of it to inspire his wealthy peers to follow his example. Just as depicted, Guggenheim's valet also chose to follow his lead as a gentleman, and Guggenheim was purported to have said that only a coward would do anything other than said example. Everyone should openly admire and praise Guggenheim as well as his valet the same as real men who refused to be saved when there were women, children, and others aboard who deserved to live.

I never understood if Astor was looking up in a resigned way and kind of accepting what was happening or if he didn’t like Guggenheim and had no want to share a final meaningful word with him other than “Madeline told me to look for the dog”.
Guggenheim was Jewish, Astor was a WASP. Even the upper class Jews were discriminated against back then.
I think it was just mutual resignation of their fate and the fact that he didn't want to become sentimental.
The man was a goddamn hero! This was reported by numerous survivors. He went into one of the lounges with one of his men told the people to fit more people in his spot. To think (in the timeline of the movie) water was climbing the Grand Staircase just one deck below and already spilling over the boat deck and into the wheelhouse as this interaction was taking place.
To not seek higher ground and to calmly climb down the stairs arguably 'closer' to your demise is something i dont think many could pull off.

I think that the cut they used in the movie where they end the scene right after Guggenheim says “But we would like a brandy!” adds better dark humor; they state they are going to go down like gentlemen yet they need alcohol to relieve fear. It’s apparent since Guggenheim immediately spins back to the officer as if he can’t do anything without the drink and he almost forgot to say it. A pretty funny moment. Cameron made a good decision to just cut there.
Edit: I forgot to add that if it were to be extended to this scene. The humor may not have been as obvious since it’s not a dramatic cut, it just flows to more dialogue in the exact same take, making it easy to forget.

Guggenheim and Astor were actually real heroes during the Titanic's sinking. They gave up their lifeboat seats, went below decks to assist the opening of jammed doors and bulkheads, and smashed through windows to lead women and children to safety.

It's somewhat relatable to me that Astor would be searching for his dog amidst the chaos of the sinking ship. When we're trapped in circumstances totally beyond our control, sometimes our minds just grasp at something normal to exercise a little control over our situation. Looking for a dog is essentially a distraction. I feel like we all do that.
Astor wasn't some idle rich stuffed shirt. He was a U.S. Army Colonel, an inventor, a writer. And I'll bet he went out with his boots on, just like he did in the film.
He drowned because he cut into his life jacket to show his wife what it was made of inside. It was before any of the passengers realized that the ship was actually sinking, and the evacuation wasn't just precaution.
Of course, he probably wouldn't have survived the icy waters if he had been able to float.

I don't know much about the guy who played J.J Astor, except that his name is Eric Braeden, and he must be a very popular soap opera star, because for the past decade or 2, I CONSTANTLY see him on the cover of "Soap Opera Digest", and magazines like it! (which I see whenever i'm at the check-out at the grocery store)

All the propaganda about this unsinkable ship, JP Morgan and his friends cancelling at the last minute their presence on the ship, and the ennemis they made via their opposition to the creation of the Federal Reserve and the coming war. They probably worked it out real quick that the rest of the banksters have colluded against them, and that their fate is sealed as the others masters of the world want them dead.

I want someone to make a fan edit of this film that includes all the deleted scenes, but cuts out all the fictional characters. Yeah it would probably only be a half hour to 40 minutes at most but it would still be an interesting mini film
There once was an edit on TH-cam where 90% of the Jack and Rose scenes were cut. It wasn’t in places it would’ve been impractical, but I enjoyed it more without the love story. Sadly it’s not here anymore.

Too be fair, men were allowed to take a seat in the lifeboats, no matter the class, so more third class men survived then first class men. Once the First Class men realised the situation was serious, most of them stepped away from the boats and drowned.

This was NOT a deleted scene, I had it on DVD and this scene was in the 2nd DVD (there was two DVDs because it was 3 hrs long) the first DVD was her voyage and 2nd was the sinking
It was deleted. I seen this film a bunch of times when it was in theaters. The line that he said was in the picture but him and Astor meeting wasn’t in it. I think the DVD was anniversary DVD.

Which makes sense, because apparently there were several deleted scenes involving Astor and his dog, so once you cut the other parts of the dog thread, then it wouldn't make sense to have him in a scene where he makes a random reference to it like that. Still, unfortunate, because it's such a great moment where he looks up as if to say, "such a shame, it was a great ship, and I'm not ready to die just yet."
