My dad bought a used Mk2 in 1964, my mom hated it (me and my 2 brothers thought it was awesome). We had it for six weeks, of which four weeks it was in the garage being repaired. I remember going with my dad to visit it in the shop and we saw some incredible XKE’s there. Anyway my mom won, my dad sold it, and she got a new 1964 Ford Falcon. Little did she know that 6 months later she could have had a new Mustang. Thanks for the video and the memories.
Really enjoyed this, I totally endorse your view's on the sound of the Moss box, 1st gear coupled with the Jag 6 cylinder growl is a gem of a sound! I own a 1964 3.8, It's been converted to an all synchro box, Guess what? It's going back to a moss! I've got a mint low mileage moss box to put back in, My 3.8 motor is tired so a Big valve 4.2 out of an XJ S3 is going in on 2" carbs, Will be interesting to compare it to the 3.8, If it doe's a good job it might be staying in permanently! Back to the MK2 you drove, Odd that it's a 1966 with a moss box, All synchro's came in about mid 1965? Cheers, Subscribed.
Thank you! What an elegant car. Lovely colour, and I agree about that Moss gearbox. Such a harmonious whine, which is music enough so you don't need to switch on the Motorola radio. That air cleaner is another work of art. Please do a full hour on her... Cheers
...going on and on about the lovely whine of the square cut 1st gear. ...probably craving the grinding of a knackered wheel bearing or two too. but, ya, love these cars. :)
Here in the USofA I owned a 1959 Jaguar 3.4 sedan MK1 sedan in 1963. I paid $1500 USD at the time. I believe that car new was $4200 USD. A fun car to drive and one of a kind in the era of large American cars. Maroon with black leather interior. 3 speed borg Warner transmission.
I love that car Funny thing about that wining is that my mom has a half broken Citroen that sounds fairly similar and when I was younger I used to go to a lot of car shows and I’d see a MKII and hear the noise anyway when my mom would come and pick me up I would hear the Citroen and for one dreamy second I thought we had a MKII. 😂 oh well
We always heard it was a bank robber's dream car, they could outrun the cop cars in Britain. So eventually several UK police jurisdictions started using the Mark ii.
Mark 2 jaguar may well the most beautiful car design ever.It also was luxurious interior and gave a smooth ride,AND its 100%British we should be so proud.
The whine is due to the helix angle of the teeth. The angle was changed for the '64 - '77 "all-synchro" box to reduce gear noise, and then changed again part-way through production to reduce it still further - early and late all-synchro gears won't interchange. The angle of the gear teeth influences noise-levels and power-absorption. "Straight-cut" gears in a racing 'box absorb less power but are hellish noisy.
A work of art , and with the lovely xk engine. The 3.8 could do zero to 60 in 8.10 seconds pretty impressive for the day and often used by crime members as a getaway vehicles and the police alike
Fastest period times I have seen are 8.4 to 60, 24 seconds to 100, top speed 128. Other tests credited it with 8.8 / 25 secs / 125. These were on Moss box cars - never seen a period test of a 3.8 with an all-synchro.
What causes the sound of the whine in 1st gear pulling off? Of all models funnily enough, my 2004 renault clio sounds the same! I hope it's not from any kind of problem as I do love the sound!
@robert elliot Not knackered bearings! - design and construction of gear cluster and layshafts - delightful whine is unintended sideshow noise of how gearbox built in its day to carry extent of torque from the powerful XK engine - I'll put me coat on now and be off! :)
They need nothing - having ally heads, they already have hardened-steel valve-seats. The trade in changing the valve-seats on Jags and Astons is/was just a rip-off - the original valve seats are fine with unleaded - this was confirmed by the MD of "Brico" who manufactured them for Jag, Aston, and others.
Very true - why do people do this ? There's something about Jaguars that brings out the absolute worst in people ! In fact, I occasionally daydream of how nice it would be to build a huge bonfire of all those cheap, glitzy Moto Shita steering wheels, and put classic cars back with their right wheels. They just look so out of place; they never match the existing woodwork and the finish looks like clear plastic. Most seem to have a truly nasty textured-finish black plastic centre which would never have been seen on any car in-period, decorated with a tawdry badge that you wouldn't want on your key-fob, let alone on the steering-wheel. Add on some bonnet straps, a couple of chip-pans over the head-lights, bullet mirrors, a set of bonnet louvres coupled with those fake "Coombs arches" that stick out like jug-ears where they meet the door, obviously fit a set of too-small radials so you have a huge gap between the tread and the wheel arch, XJ seats with protruding head-rests, a modern radio spoiling the dash, paint it to look like a fire-engine - and you too can have a comprehensively ruined Mark 2 Jaguar......(not that I mind much, or anything.....)

How can you not love this classic, Its beautiful in all the right areas, and even in the wrong ones !
Grace, space and pace was the motto.
The Who Immemorialised it in a song that never made it to "The Who Sell Out".
Pete's guitar sounds uncannily like Hendrix's.
beautiful car....jaguar produced some exceptional cars in the 1960's....tks for shearing

I just drove my grandpas friends one it was the most amazing experience of my life I’ll never forget it
My uncle bought a '64 new. Stunning looks still.
It looks REAL compared to modern cars.
My grandpa has one of these. He got the interior redone with nice red leather so it’s lovely inside. I really want to take it for a spin lol

I Love Jaguar old english car.....stunning brand! MK2 is the best! Thank you so much for pubblication...cio

My buddy had one of these, BRG w/red leather. We'd drive to high school in it
Une œuvre d’art, superbe voiture.
Lovely Motor !
Had a 3.8 s type great cars ,so far ahead of their time

Fabulous car 👍👍
Lovely mk2.
The whining means it needs a fluid change on the box. Should be done every 3750 miles. Tappets done at same time after winter oil change.

Love one, great drive and review, but that sterring wheel, put the original back.

Bellissima auto.
Alto livello estetico
Bought my 1965 second hand one in London, 1973, for £55...sold it in Cornwall for £15 in 1974...(No Brakes)..
Noble lovely car.
Is it a Moss gearbox in this year of car? Just asking.
Love this & love Ferrari’s. Thumbs up.
My mini and minor have that wine in the gearbox
I'm sure you meant "whine" but wine in the gearbox would make for a happier set of gears wouldn't it? 😂
Speedometer is intermittent/broken - cable, gear?
It's jittery, they were all like that until the 1980s and so were the fuel gauges.
What causes the sound of the whine in 1st gear pulling off? Of all models funnily enough, my 2004 renault clio sounds the same! I hope it's not from any kind of problem as I do love the sound!
I think, it's from the gearbox.
Straight cut gears I believe
@robert elliot Bad bearings is usually more of a rattling sound.
@robert elliot Not knackered bearings! - design and construction of gear cluster and layshafts - delightful whine is unintended sideshow noise of how gearbox built in its day to carry extent of torque from the powerful XK engine - I'll put me coat on now and be off! :)
What year this car you are showcasing, was built ?
That is the sound of our former macho culture.
Can't stand it that manual transmissions are slowly going away in new cars. Imagine James Bond driving a automatic DB5!
Morse's Jag makes the same whine.
Fantastic. What do you do about getting parts?
Parts are no problem to get.
I have a can of original air for the tyres from 1962. On Ebay....😉
Wat is het grootste sleepschip
Not a lot of charge going on there!?
What was done to adapt the engine to Unleaded Petrol?
The XK engine already has hardened valve seats because of the alloy head. I never did anything to mine, just put the unleaded stuff in.
