We have had almost every type of “ guard dog”. We loved them all.
My Rottie seemed to always know what I wanted him to do before any command. We never did anything more than basic training….he just knew. It was uncanny. Hard to imagine a dog easier to train.

I agree. Over the decades we have had dozens of dogs. We bought some, lots of strays n rescues….every size n shape…yorkie n Jack Russel’s to Pitties, Dobies, Rotties, cane corsos…but the Rottie really was uncanny how he just always seemed to know exactly what I wanted him to do and he was so happy to please me.
We are not trainers…don’t know how and don’t really care. Our secret to success was always providing lots of exercise and lots of love. Never had any problems.

The Rottweilers in the 80s and 90s were far more formidable guardians. Back then the Rottweilers were more stubborn and dominant and sometimes zoned out when holding onto the bite for too long. It was for sure my favourite breed back then next to the bandogge which is what i have now. Modern Rottweilers have lost alot of these traits, far more softer docile and friendly. Definitely better for family pets but finding one that is a tough and capable is rare. Alot of people dont know what the Rottweiler actually was especially when bred to confront violence and high stress scenerios, not a dog for a beginner.

What is important is that Rottweilers are continued to be used by professional training organizations to maintain the traditional qualities of the Rottweiler so that the breed does not degenerate, solely, into a family soft toy, losing its formidable traits.

I’ve had them and they are naturally protective of your family and friendly with your friends you allow them in. They aren’t as quick and agile as a GSD for police work.

That’s because breeders have made them to big. A family member of mine has a female that was the runt of the litter, she weighs 72lbs. She extremely fast and agile to me she is the true example of a working Rottweiler. She would work circles around the big obese Rottweilers that are being bred.

A true bred German Rottweiler is still the King in the Canine world. But sadly there are other countries that tried to do their own versions. I work with dogs everyday and currently have two Kangals, four Corsos and two German Rottweilers. It is no contest when it comes to who is in charge, but in a good way.

Two kinds of rottweilers here in South Africa: the big boned heavy rotties lazing about in people's yards and the super fit athletic ones that the correctional facilities and security companies use. Went recently to dump some refuse saw beautifully built athletic and agile rotties standing guard. No one can outrun them and absolutely psycho killers. Same as the ones i saw at Drakenstein prison and other prisons

They are still used, but much less.
Rottweilers and Dobermanns (of which Rottweiler is one of ancestor breeds) suffer greatly from cardiomyopathy, which is not easily prevented through breeding screen tests.
They also suffer from hip dysplasia and knee ligaments tearing as other diseases.
In hot weather, on average, they simply do not posess the same level of activity as malinois.
They also suffer from breeding practices of show popular breeds, where good working character was lost.

1:23 - we gathr our info. from reliable sources.
2:29 - especially from the 1970s n on police n military shifted on dog breeds more specially trained n suitd 4 specific tasks.
4:17- police want more agile n trainable breeds. Some units prefer breeds more easy 2 train.
    5:49 - drug detection....Belgian Malinois n Alsatians.

You missed the fact that the Rotty was biting far to hard and doing huge damage to criminals

I's all a cop out to push Shepherds. They are very smart and trainable. Using perception of idiots who only learn by listening to the media or people with mental issues that create a bias. Then the only other thing was specific type tasks. Yes, They are not as agile or fast as the preferred breed now used. But if you want to get a thug down and stay down. The size will help a lot. I have had a police trained dog attack while wearing the protective suit. I was shocked how easy I could throw the dog around. Yes the pain of the bite would have made a huge difference. But still doesn't change the facts that I could actually walk around with the dog on my arm.
I think the shepherd was marketed and sold to to help out the breed sales. If I was a thug and was thinking of doing something. Which dog would I not want coming at me.

GSDs suffer from hip problems and cant work long. ROTTIES are good dogs and if trained right they are great for police jobs .this statement frankly doesn't explain crap.idont own a rotie but know many and they are excellent dogs in fact one of Mt friends uses them to guard his used car lot he never formally trained them they just mind the house so to speak and are friendly to those they trust igo by his business early mornings on way to train station the dogs escourt me from one endow his property to the other which is across street from train the do same at night .I stop and pet them through fence scratching thier bellies they love it

The police probably don't want the extra bite force. Gotta pay the doctor bills. Rotts bite really hard and that pull is going to hurt people. Plus, they are defensive, so they might not stop as fast as other breeds. One thing is for sure, they don't seem to feel pain. Mine can get blood draws and shots, never even flinches. We used to give him cow femurs and he can crush the bone. He split one and a splinter got jammed in his gums. Had to have him put under so they could take it out. Not because of the pain, but because they were afraid to put anything in there. Ironically, he's been bit by other dogs and never bit back. Even bled once.

The Rottweiler is so attached to its master that it can abandon the pursuit of the criminal out of concern for the police. It is probably the best breed for personal protection, but the shepherds have a better sense of smell and are more alert.

First of all, he is one of the most intelligent dogs in the dog world.
in two the rottweiler adrk is one of the most versatile working dogs
in three the German research and police services still use the ADrk Rottweiler and not your big American McDonald Rottweiler
and in four they would all need you to go back to school to cultivate yourself

Rottweilers have bad hips and are not agile enough to chase, jump and climb all the time, they'll get injuries way quicker than lighter dogs.

Thank heavens that the Rotties are no longer preferred to Malinois and German Shepherds. My big sadly departed Rottie - 13 yrs old - was best friends with all the children in my residence in France at a time when Rotties had such a bad reputation. If well trained, they are the most marvellous dogs, and so goofy and loving.

One reason not to use a Rottweiler could be the dog jaw strength, when he bites a criminal the Rottweiler could crack bones. When a Rottweiler pulls his handler he can dislocate the handler shoulder due to the dogs incredible strength.

I have a German Shepherd/Rottweiler dog, I have not trained him for any protection work so I cannot say how he would be for that. As far as being a sociable confident dog that loves walks and all kinds of play, he is the best.
