  • With 10 metres opening up much more regularly, its a good time to think about getting an antenna up. Verticals and dipoles do very well. But what about a Delta Loop? And should this be Vertical or Horizontal?

I think 10m is close to the heart of all of us who started with CB, certainly the case for me.

I built and used one of these for about 10 years on 11m back in the late 70s and early 80s... it was my only antenna at the time, it was on a set on TV brackets outside my bedroom window at my parents house.. i was still only a child really, I would hop out onto the flat roof and loosed the u bolts to turn it... the 'Armstrong method' lol... great times... worked a ton of DX with that loop 😊

Great video as usual! Keep them coming, I enjoy them. I have a 80m skyloop at my qth and love it. I have tried end feds, inverted L's, and raised verticle monoband antennas. The skyloop still reigns as king. Not a 'verticle delta' loop, but still a full wave loop. Hope you have a good New Year, I look forward to more of your videos. 73's, N2SCD

Thanks for the discussion, Tim. I'll be building one at my QTH soon. I have some 75 Ohm coax in the scrap bin that will make a perfect matching section for feeding...I just have to figure out the VF. Hope you are having a great start to 2023.

Happy New Year Tim, Thanks for all the videos they are really helpful.
I cut some wire to make a dipole for 10m yesterday as it happens, I'm just waiting for a break in the very wet Welsh weather to go and try it out :)

Great video Tim! Seriously thinking about a 10 meter Delta Loop next month when I'm back in Poland. I'm thinking about rotating the loop 90 degrees so the base of the angle is truly straight vertical, something like this I> if that makes sense. My thoughts were to feed it on the truly vertical side a quarter wavelength down from the top. I'm thinking the apex or vertex (angled) side of the loop will make it directional. Something that looks like a vertical Moxon triangle versus a square. I haven't modeled this yet, just a mad scientist idea I have right now. This might be a complete fail but I really want to give it a try. We'll see. All the best my friend!

Work pretty good fed 1/4 wave down from apex for ‘even better’ vertical polarisation. Like a pair of co-phased quarter waves with couple dBd gain. I use one now and again portable (see channel) with 75 Ohm matching stub…. or sometimes I use a 20m perimeter and feed with 450 Ohm ladder back to a balanced tuner for a couple more bands. Last week I operated SES G5AT from a friend’s station with 400W to a 5 ele and attracted lots of VK, AP, VU, HS etc. 180Qs on 10m SSB voice. I must get back into 10m a bit more myself. HNY

Nice video mate, I still prefer a vertical, less work and all round performance, just one mast, and less wire in the air for neighbors to complain about hi.

I already have an AR-10 vertical and it works great. But there is very bad power line noise in my area so I am hoping I can null out the noise with a Delta Loop.

  • @MM0OPXFieldRadio

Vertical loops are interesting Tim. I've always been hesitant to use one as its difficult to get one high enough vertically polarised. For say 12/10m not too much of an issue. Would be great to see you try one by saltwater and you only need 1 support to try. It should be awesome over the sea.

Hi Tim, I have used a an upside down delta loop on 10m with great success for several months. Just few weeks ago I changed to a moxon and although it is a great antenna I was impressed closely to it the delta loop was performing. I strongly recommend the delta to anyone who is starting in the hobby and or doesn’t have a rotator. You will certainly be surprised with its performance.

Tim just out of couriosity have you modeled the loop fed a quarterwave up one of the legs. That the place I always understood it to be at its best for a triangle. Shaun M3ULT

So, the way I understand this, I want the flat side or opening facing my target station. Right? Both horizontal or vertical polarized.

Through the plane of the loop for horizontal. Less of a requirement for vertical

    • @timg5tm941

  • @johnflowers1976

Thinking through the delta loop, horizontal it's a pair of stacked dipoles (bent and the top one an inverted V), and vertical it's a pair of phased verticals ? 73 Tim and Happy New Year, G0JLF.

I'm building a Delta Loop and some people tell me to use a 4:1 Balun and others tell me to use a 2:1 Balun. Has anyone done a comparison to determine if the 2:1 or 4:1 Balun work the best?

Better ways of doing it though. Inverted delta loop fed at the bottom gives you optimum low angle transmission, look up W6NBC's presentation.

    Hi Tim,
10m is easy to build antennas as they are relatively small. Luckily I have a 5 element yagi for that band. Waiting for the band to bust wide open. 🙂 You and your family have a safe and Happy New Year. 73 WJ3U
