doctordave I agree. Rio is off the chain. I really like playing that song it’s really fun to play. One my favorite bassist from the 80’s.
And there's still sth better than that - check DD's live version of "Khanada" from the BBC broadcast late 1981 - it kicks like hell!

Neil Barnett I love that song. The lyrics, synth and bassline are a work of genius.
Also Patrice Rushen's "Forget Me Nots" has an unforgettable bassline.
Love this clip, but gotta say "Rio" blows "Hungry Like the Wolf" away as far a best/killer bass lines off that album.

Love your Smith!! I have a CR-5 that I just adore!! And agreed on Rio being THE bass line out of Duran Duran's archive that's just the top.
The Lion's Mouth, another Kajagoogoo song, has an amazing bassline as well in the chorus
I'd also argue that Level 42's "Something About You" should displace one of the songs from this list.
doctordave I agree. That was one hot bass line from the 80’s. I love playing that song on my bass. And “ Red, Red wine” also has a nice bass line.
Even Scandal's 'Goodbye to you' is worth an honorable mention.

Manny I have to tell you how much you have helped me. I was a frustrated bass player for years until I started viewing your videos. Started slowly with full understanding or minor/major then finding similar notes on the neck. Your explanation of theory that had been eluding me for years encouraged me to learn more. Now instead of people telling me that I cannot play they simply sit stunned, thanks to YOU !!!!! Wish I could take online Skype lessons with you ! All the best and keep Groovin :} P.S. My Spanish is limited but I still listen you communicate so well and always seem to be sooo Happy.

That would be great, "Foxy Lady" by Pleasure is one of my favorites. It's from the '70's, but Nathan Phillips is amazing on that one too. I saw him play "Foxy Lady" live once, he stunned.

classics !! Taylor from duran duran is such a great bassist with a smooth funky vibe although i think i prefere the bass in Rio and A view to a kill ..

Great playing and good list but no Rush? No Duran Duran? Rio to me is probably the best bass line of the decade and there are so many amazing Rush bass lines and RHCP was quite popular with Flea killing it. As someone who grew up in the 80s I would change at least half the list.

Really nice playing, video production, tabs and everything. One suggestion: play what the tabs show. The extraneous grace notes make it difficult for those learning to connect the tab to the playing.

Living on a prayer hat Einengung markanten Basston. Den hast du leider nicht getroffen. Schade. Aber vermutlich war das kein Bass sondern ein Synthesizer. So wie vermutlich I. Studio das meiste Zeug aus den 80ern. It Synthesizern eingespielt wurde. Die Bassisten der 80er waren zu sehr mit Lappen beschäftigt. :-(

Thanks Tim. I was under the impression that the low note was done with an octave pedal or recorded later on. But from now on I'll include the low note as well
i figured it was synth then watched the session player on a bass guitar video going over some of his jackson/quincy jones high lights. louis Johnson gave off the wall and thriller a more organic pulse during an age of sequence.
Those midi sounds kinda ruin the pleasure for me!
