I used to code in Z-80 assembly language and was co-author (with my father) of Games Pack 1 for the TRS-80 home computer. The arcade version of Pac-man runs on a 4MHZ 8-bit Z-80A CPU clocked to run at 3MHZ, and utilizing specialized color video hardware to make the nice colorful graphics. The Atari 2600 is a cut-down version of a 6502 processor known as a 6510, running at 1.19MHZ and there is almost NO video hardware because the video signal has to be generated by the CPU when it's not busy with mundane tasks like game logic. The fact this 2600 version looks and sounds this good is mind-blowing.
Had Atari *not* rushed the original 2600 Pac-Man and E.T. games out the door, I think they could still have remained a major player in the home video game market. Ms. Pac-Man shows what a bit extra development time and cart memory could have achieved. The original 2600 Pac-Man should have been like that, too. The 2600 Pac-Man Jr. was amazing, too!
A better Pac-Man, or more to the point a stronger focus on 1st party quality, could have delayed the crash somewhat, but it was inevitable. Atari had zero control over the influx of shovelware, and that was the main reason the crash happened. Poor 1st party quality was Warner's fault, for being a clueless owner who did little more than take advantage of Atari while it lasted. This poor focus is what also delayed the 7800 until it was far too late. The NES taking over was _also_ inevitable because it, like the 2600 itself, was years ahead of its time, if not quite to the same degree. No platform after the VCS and Famicom would ever be so dramatically superior to the competition. It's a little unfair to point to an end-of-life game like Jr. Pac-Man as a case in point for lackluster quality control. The brutal reality about 2600 development was that it was very difficult and largely unintuitive. This is because the things you could ultimately achieve with the platform were _drastically_ more advanced than the designers ever intended. It took VCS game engineers three years to finally start meaningfully tapping this potential, and more tricks were steadily unlocked long after the 2600 had relinquished its throne. This boundary-breaking potential was first exemplified by Space Invaders (1980), which manages to display over 40 non-flickering sprites at once (including 36 invaders), on a platform designed to display 5. The VCS has, amazingly, still not been fully explored as a platform. In the mid 2010s, a homebrew Space Invaders clone was developed which manages to display over 50 sprites, including 45 invaders. And in 2020, a homebrew enthusiast somehow developed a Space Invaders port which manages to display all 55 of the invaders, matching the arcade original. Counting the other on-screen objects, it totals about the same as the NES's sprite limit. On 1977 hardware developed six years earlier.

Ms. Pac-Man was clearly better on so many levels (graphics, sound, less flickering), yet it was the same game console. What gives?

Atari 2600 hack
HI Tam Campbell OF COURSE ITS A HACK REMAKE, BUT IT SHOWS WHAT ATARI 2600 COULD DO, WITH THE HARDWARE OF THREE YEARS OLDER MACHINE (1977) THAN THE ORIGINAL ARCADE (1980)
Djr je😂😂🤭🤭😁😁😄😄🤣🤣🤣🤣
Ce n'est sûrement pas Atari 2600. Cette console n'avait pas la capacité d'avoir des images aussi bien définies. Je dirais plus Atari 5200
HI xMazingerZ THIS IS ATARI 2600 GUARANTEED BECAUSE I PLAYED IT

ABOVE I SEND YOU A LINK OF THE GAME. I TOLD THIS BECAUSE, I DONT KNOW IF TH-cam WILL SEND THE LINK
THE PACMAN THAT YOU SHOW ME IS THE OFFICIAL PACMAN. THE PACMAN THAT I SHOW (IN THE VIDEO) IS A HOMEBREW, A PD PUBLIC DOMAIN PAC MAN. IT SHOWS WHAT AN ATARI 2600 CAN DO. AND ATARI 2600 CAN DO A LOTS OF WONDERFUL THINGS. ARCADE PACMAN WAS RELEASED IN 1980 BUT THE MACHINE THAT RUN THIS HOMEBREW PAC MAN IS FROM 1977. NOW, YOU UNDERSTAND THE POWER OF THE ATARI 2600 LOOK THE ABOVE LINKS . DOWNLOAD IT AND PLAY IT

Pac man hack
HI Camila Zarama ITS PROPABLY A MS PACMAN HACK WITH CHANGED SOUNDS AND GRAPHICS
YES ,IT CREATED LAST YEARS . IT IS ""VERY PLAYABLE"" JUST LIKE ARCADES BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT IS THAT COMES FROM A MACHINE THAT RELEASED IN 1977 IN HOME MARKET WHICH IS 3 YEARS EARLIER BEFORE THE ORIGINAL ARCADE VERSION OF PACMAN CAME OUT ( 1980 ) . ALSO WHEN PACMAN FROM ARCADES RELEASED THE ARCADE CABINET IT COSTS A HUGE AMOUNT OF MONEY BUT THE ATARI 2600 HAS A LOGICAL PRICE FOR A HOME AND FOR WHAT IT CAN DO . BY THE WAY THIS GAME IS PD-HOMEBREW AND ITS ORIGINAL FILE NAME IS ""pacman2600_8k_v7_test.bin"" AND IT IS AS PLAYABLE AS ARCADES
