Discontinued Shingles: What Insurance Hopes You Don't Know

  • In this video, we're going to discuss an issue that insurance companies hope you don't know about. If you have a discontinued shingle on your roof and it's damaged, it may be challenging to match it. This is where ITEL reports come into play. ITEL is a third-party company that analyzes roofing materials to determine their composition and properties. Insurance companies often rely on ITEL reports to determine the replacement value of a roof.
However, what many homeowners don't know is that if their discontinued shingles are no longer available on the market, they may be able to get their roof covered by insurance. Insurance companies typically won't cover the cost of replacing an entire roof because of one damaged shingle, but if the shingle is discontinued, the cost of replacing the entire roof may be covered.
At Restoration Roofing, we have extensive experience working with insurance companies and advocating for our clients' best interests. If you're dealing with a damaged roof, especially one with discontinued shingles, we can help you navigate the insurance claims process and ensure that you get the coverage you deserve.
If you have any gutters questions or are in the Memphis area and need an inspection, give Restoration Roofing a call at 901-854-3402.

I had this problem also. I called the state insurance commissioner and that's all it took. Brand new roof.

    Great Info 💪
It’s becoming more and more difficult to prove non-repairability due to manufacture guidelines and pliability

The policy says replacement with like kind and quality materials, it does not say replacement with matching materials.
Its not that the adjuster understands or not it is all about the words and wording of the contract of insurance.
The new shingle is like kind and quality. The policy wording does not include anything about the function or functionality of the replacement materials.
The policy insures the cost of the shingle not the water shedding ability or the functionality of a roof system as a whole.

Not quite, a 3 inch base board made of pine is like and quality with any other 3 inch base board made of pine, but if the design on its surface is different it wont line up with the existing material. The nail strip on the shingle he showed was nearly two inches deeper up the reveal from the smaller one.

As a retired property adjuster, I had sent two identical carpet samples to Itel for pricing, and gotten 2 different material prices from them. Some of them who work there were fresh out of college and have no ideas about building materials. It was frustrating to say the least.

@@roofingtips Former Vendor Program Estimator, General contractor and Independent Consultant to a Public Adjusting Firm... I too have sent in 2 samples of the exact same material from the same location / property and got 2 different results and prices. The samples were both clean, and without staining or noticeable wear.

Have a Tamko Heritage (Joplin plant) shingle installed in 2006. The shingle is 38-5/8" long. This is not the same as the 36" or new metric 39-3/8 inch shingle shown in video. Any idea if TAMKO actually produced this product? And State Farm is also telling me I can mix the new Metric with the old ones.

    • @roofingtips
      @roofingtips  ปีที่แล้ว +1

That is a discontinued shingle and is a “do not mix” product per Tamko.
Email me at brent@restorationroofing.com and I’ll send over some supporting documents from tamko

ITEL is owned and funded by the insurance carriers

I know nothing about this,, but hate just trusting someone and being totally ignorant. So why does it matter if its not the same size? As long as quality is the same or better. I mean a shingles purpose is to cover / seal, right? I look it like a floor installing dif carpets or wood floor, it doesnt mattet ... anyway, i had hail damage and tryn to do the right thing .. people telln me to replace ans all these roof installers are knockn because of a huge hail storm. Untrained eye visualizing nothing obvious and theres no leaks or shingles dented and the roof is over 15 to 20 years old. The car did have hail danage with this storm and did have to make a claim, but the roof ,i dnt know

Its ok for you to feel that way about your own roof, likely wont have a big problem, but you cant tell a customer who paid you to protect their asset that they have to be ok with it too.

Since your are so smart, what would you do when insurance says we have located those discontinued shingles on ITEL’s discontinued market?
How do you turn that discontinued shingle repair into a replacement? Also, you cannot use a repairability test for this example.
You are using a dream scenario. Use a real one, such as the one I have dealt with.

    • @roofingtips
      @roofingtips  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Tell the carrier to get the shingles…..
I have never seen this “discontinued shingle market” in action. I don’t even think it exists. Really. Tell the carrier, “ok, please tell me where/how I can get these shingles…..” and do it!
And why can’t you use repairability? If your roof is old and can’t be repaired, then use it! Especially if they are telling you that they have found the discontinued shingles! How can you NOT use that?

    • @aintEZbeingBeezy

I'm going through this exact scenario now with some discontinued Atlas shingles. I'm an Independent Consultant to a PA firm and I usually preset these to the adjuster like this:
      - ITEL confirmation of material make and noted discontinuation.
      - Letter from Manufacturer dually noting discontinuation, in which case I specifically ask if using reusing the old discontinued material is suggested by the manufacturer, additionally, if using any leftover remnants provides the homeowner with the same warranty.
Usually this is enough to get the full replacement approved. If not, ill include
      - Screen shot of the local code adoption (IRC 2012, 2015, 202, etc.)
      - Screen shot of IRC R903.1 "Roof assemblies shall be designed and installed in accordance with this code and the approved manufacturer's instructions..."
      - re-iterate that following manufact. recommendations is code requirement.
If, from there, the adjuster is a turbo douche, and says "ThE PoLiCy DoEsN't hAvE CoDe CovErAge" I will make the following argument:
      - The roof was in code compliance at the time of install (pre-loss). So repair, or consequentially replacement, built to code compliance in this instance isn't an additional cost beyond restoring the homeowner to pre-loss condition.
If you are not a PA with a signed Letter of Rep. don't discuss anything policy - Instead Present your position in an "ask-don't-tell" format and see if the adjuster can be reasoned with. If not, you might have to consult with a PA.
