    Please comment: "I love....I love". I remember thinking this movie was fantastic when I saw it in the theaters. I am on an email group and most of the members were bashing it. There was one lone fan besides myself so I thought I was crazy. I haven't watched it since. After listening to this video and watching multiple other videos in the last few days about how great it is. I am reminded of why I really love it, and I have decided to watch it again soon. My trip down this path started when someone on Facebook posted that The Last Jedi isn't just the worst Star Wars movie but the worst movie ever made.

      I felt the same way when I saw it. I went online expecting universal praise and instead it was universal hate. I thought I was living in an alternate universe or something because the movie I saw was beyond excellent. I think Star Wars fans are just an insufferable and cynical audience who are literally never happy. They simultaneously want characters to be unchanging yet at the same time constantly want "something different". What are Disney even meant to do lol? I really hope people like the Acolyte because if they don't, Disney will never try anything new ever again. We'll just get nostalgia driven content for decades, endlessly stuck in the New Republic era.

      People who say this movie is the worst movie EVER make me feel insane! And still to this day I don't think anyone could really explain why this is a thing. The best explanation I can offer myself is that people don't like how subconscious the plot is and that when you interpret the film on a purely literal sense, it seems like a waste of time. Rey and Ben get close to turning but by the end, in a literal sense they are back to square one. Finn and rose fail their mission. Poe does a dumb thing that gets most of the resistance killed that some would argue was preventable. Luke spends most of the film in hiding and once he reveals himself, he dies. When you look at all these events through a literal lens, you completely miss the fact that the characters all have philosophical revelations. Beyond that, these revelations are all connected to each other, creating an over-arching meta commentary of star wars. When you delve deeper into these themes, you can trace it all the way back to Jospeh Campbell's ideas in comparative mythology. Campbell, whose ideas had a major influence on George Lucas and the original trilogy. This film is infatuated with pondering mythic ideas. Is this to the film's detriment? That's up to the individual I guess.

    1:08:00 as per the Finn stuff, people say he's side-lined for Kylo and I just don't agree since most of Kylo's screentime is in scenes about Rey or Luke, whereas most of Finn's scenes are about him as his growth. As you said in TROS he has more screentime but less actual story

    • @Joe_Brennan_
      @Joe_Brennan_  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The “replaced by Kylo” complaint I think comes exclusively down to the fact he’s no longer paired with Rey. Despite Finn being the star of his own subplot, they assume the characters in supporting roles of Rey’s story are more important and prominent

    Thanks for this, I saw it at just the right time to get me through a rough first day back at work, and it was a great reminder of why I love this movie so much.
    Something that's never occurred to me before now, which is wild, is the juxtaposition of Luke standing over Kylo with his lightsaber, and then later Hux standing over Kylo about to pull out his blaster.
    Luke is afraid for those he loves and sees a desperate way out before realising too late that it's not the way, but before he can say anything, Kylo pulls the building down.
    Hux is also afraid of Kylo, but his fear is selfish and his desire to kill Kylo in the moment is opportunistic. It's unclear if Kylo sees what he was about to do, I guess not, but if he did then it's obviously he sees him as so little a threat that he doesn't need to do anything.
    It's just a small thing, and maybe I'm reading too much into the similarity between the scenes, I just always find something new with this movie.

    Spoofing certain outrage merchants aside? This is a really good look at TLJ, a movie that honestly I feel gets better as time goes on. I always felt like the ST's biggest problem was time and it rigidly adhering to certain ideas. The point of not planning the story from the beginning was to give it this sense of spontaeity and so writers and directors don't feel hamstrung. However they also did communicate with one another. Rian Johnson asked JJ to have R2 accompany Rey in TFA to Ahch-To since that would better serve TLJ. He watched the movie several times in order to properly form what his sequel would need and while people are free to disagree with what TLJ had to offer? It's clear to me quite a few of the complaints are based on people basically laying out what they wanted the ST to be over what we got and conflating us not getting that with it somehow being bad with the worst being when people try to blame this movie for how TROS turned out when really everything points to TROS needing more delays and for the crew to not stupidly be trying to somehow force Leia into a story that due to circumstances she can't really have a proper role in and maybe to an extent Disney being cowards which in turn has led to outrage merchants gaining this belief that they matter in the grand scheme of things.
    TLJ is not a perfect film but honestly? It was a welcome one. TFA was a great helping of comfort food, a way to show us that under this new management the filmmakers were still more than capable of making an old-school Star Wars adventure and that we were not repeating the mistakes of the prequels. In hindsight it went a smidge too far in trying to not be like the prequels but considering where we were back in 2015? It was more than welcome. However, we made it clear that Star Wars couldn't just be comfort food. The next film needed to be new and daring, it needed to further the story and TLJ provided that and then some.

    • @Joe_Brennan_
      @Joe_Brennan_  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      That’s a very good point about prequel rejection being a much more welcome attitude in 2015. I often feel we ignore the cultural context of the world and its attitude to those movies 9 years ago.

Back then if you even had the tiniest suggestion that George should have involvement with the sequels or hell just that you want to see space politics, you'd be torn apart. It's kind of funny how Star Wars fans like to scrub away when they didn't like something. Like when Empire came out and people hated it, these days even if you point some people towards reviews from 1980, they'll act like you just tried to tell them Superman is a real person.

    2:24:00 even though it was meant to be romantic set up I still love that scene. Poe recognises Rey as Rey, she's not no one she's her. It sets up her as the hero of the resistance and she needs to contended with that role despite the fact she's no one. 8 ends with Rey having soo much baggage and the fact 9 ignored most of it for less interesting baggage makes me really sad still.

      I’ve enjoyed real-time reminders of the things that I said and hearing your thoughts. • @azaanyasir2811

      @@Joe_Brennan_ there's a much better version of episode 9 that focuses on how Rey feels about being a nobody who's suddenly been thrust into the position of the resistances last hope.
      When people talk about Rey nobody (this goes for both people who like and dislike it) I feel there's often a failure to properly engage with what her parentage means for her character. Despite what a lot of people say the whole "anyone can be a hero" isn't really the point imo, it's mostly just a nice marketing thing and lesson for kids. Rey nobody is good because of how if effects Rey's characters, Rey would presumably feel insecurity over the fact a nobody like her is the galaxy's last hope he needs to keep Luke's spark burning. Realistically most people in universe wouldn't actually care if Rey was a nobody (I doubt everyone knew Luke was Anakins son) but Rey cares and that's why it's important and good storytelling. You could even develop this idea further by having people in universe just assume she is Luke's daughter, and now she needs to grapple with people's expectations of her without any of the benefits one would get from being a his daughter
      Anyway I probably waffled for too much there but I hope you get what I'm saying

    Thank you so much for this, Joe. I really enjoyed watching along with you (in a parasocial sort of way). I haven’t rewatched this in a long time. I remember having mixed feelings about the film when it first came out, but the things I loved about it, I grew to love more over time and the things I liked less I realised weren’t the deal breakers that I thought they were.
    One thing I’ve always said is that this is the most ambitious Star Wars film since Empire. It take the story and the characters to new places, both literally and figuratively, and it has absolutely no interest in pandering to its audience. Whether you like it or not, it has ideas and themes and something to say.
    It’s also visually utterly stunning, from Krait looking like it’s bleeding when shot at, to the burning tree, to Luke silhouetted against the First Order. And the cream of them all, the Holdo Manoeuvre - COME ON!
    The fact that they followed this up (and concluded the trilogy, no less!) with The Rise Of Skywalker is so utterly disappointing in ways that I’ll probably always feel sore about.

The people who question the physics of bombers in space in this movie but not the physics of the originals also boggle my mind - nothing about the way the ships work makes sense, because Lucas specifically wanted the feel of scrappy real world dogfighters, so he threw the space physics text book in the bin and went with rule of cool. Haven't finished the video yet so maybe you talk about it but as per the crawl and the state of the galaxy
    I've always assumed Snokes plan was to blitzkrieg the galaxy with starkiller and the supremacy but that would still take a few weeks (which is what Rey says to Luke)
    The events of this movie however I felt gave an opportunity to where the 3rd movie and stuff set in-between could have soft rebooted the resistance first order conflict into something more interesting.
    The combination of loosing starkiller, the supremacy and Snoke, the fact that the first order is now being ran by Kylo and Hux (two idiots) and Luke inspiring the galaxy meant that the war could have ended up being far more equally sided going into 9, instead of just being the same empire Vs rebels dynamic
    That's just what I think anyway! Looking forward to finishing this hope you don't mind me leaving more comments if I have more things!

      Leave as many thoughts as you want, I think that notion of a more balanced Episode IX is a great one. There was so much potential for the conflict, and it’s very funny JJ basically did away with the First Order entirely

    2:00:00 I think JJ jus saw bb8 as Rey's sidekick, presumably a carryover from when Poe initially died, but if he doesn't it makes no sense for bb8 to be Rey's. R2 is the protagonist droid let Rey use him

    I wanna make some commentary on your commentary as I watch, so I will post them as replies to myself.
    First thing is a tangent, I hate that people (real life, not characters) pick on Kylo for losing to Rey. The movie established the power of the caster he was shot with would kill with extreme prejudice anyone without the force (so Kyle must be using it to cling to life), that Finn is a capable warrior who kylo had to first fight and wear himself vout even more, and that kylo was a mental wreck which messes up one's use of the force, while the movie established Rey is strong on the force and picking up fast (wether this makes sense or not, different discussion, the movie did establish that, her awakening to the force is literally in the title). There is an obvious way those parts go together, the movie shouldn't need to stop the scene, remind the amnesiac audience of previous scenes and spell out loud how to put them together.

    A commentary with you might make me watch this movie again, but as Syrio Forel said in Game of Thrones. 'Not Today'
    When I do watch movies I like to watch them in one go. Although generally most modern movies are rubbish, I love content creators making commentaries. Not every minute of it had to be a carefully considered or researched presentation and not every moment needs to be a teardown... just enjoy it. With the decline in physical media, fewer and fewer movies come with commentaries. With most of the DVD's and Blu-rays I own, if it has a commentary I have watched it more with that than just the movie itself. With this being April Fools, a few of the content creators I follow have metaphorically Rick Rolled me, on has ACTUALLY Rick Rolled me. I hope you enjoyed doing it.

    the april fools joke IS the last jedi, because it's awful. You can't seriously look at the movie in extensive detail and claim that the numerous writing issues aren't there. Whether they effect you or not is subjective, but there are SO many issues in this film that turn people away. They could have had the same plot, ideas and themes without making a complete mess of it in terms of internal logic, cause and effect and respect to continuity.
