  • This video is aimed at discussing the fundamentals of the Onager. What is typically is loaded with, how it deploys, how far it can engage from, etc. This video also discusses the typical battle plan for double onager lists in an attempt to prepare you to face off against this type of fleet.

    Great video, Ewok. You do a great job breaking down why this is a borderline broken ship in a competitive tournament setting. I agree that the worst effect is the way it’s distorted the Imperial meta, and how it limits list design for opponents.
    It really sucks that a good portion of my Rebel ships just can’t really go toe to toe with these things.

    Another great informative video!
    Sort of adding onto what you were saying at the end, Engine Techs are becoming a 'staple' for Testbeds (and why I think the Support slot is arguably worse than its cheap cost), allowing them to go from speed 1 to 3 with a dial/token, or to speed 4 with dial + token (speed 2 to 4 with just a dial/token).

    We have a House rule, Onager, Starhawk, SSD only permitted in 800-1000pt games. Why? Because in some sort of fictional realism no Navy whether Rebel or Imperial would deploy a rare asset without the proper support. I know, I know but 400pt games. Right for Competition play, but play as you will... It's called Armada and why not use the fleet you paid money for. Our average games are 600pt games.

    I encountered the ISD version of this list on Saturday (Onager, ISD, 2xGozantis). Yes, it was annoying. The first thing I noticed is the wonky timing of Veteran Gunners. You shouldn't be able to cherry-pick accuracies and then re-roll. It should be an all-or-nothing proposition. Also, Onager ignition attacks should have some kind of token refresh mechanic like what was done with SPHA-T. Lastly, the Test Bed should get a point increase.

      I agree that the test bed is under costed, and Vet Gunners is basically an accuracy fishing machine..

    Would hyperspace rings help against a onager?

      They are a way to get in close, though they may not pick the mission unless you can make the other choices so bad they choose it.

    Do you think there's any reason to try out the mc75 armored as a battle carrier with agate for an evade?

      an evade and brace on an ECM platform is good, why the MC 75? its a poor platform unless you are using Raddus. Assault Frigate already has the tokens you are looking for, ECM, and squadron 3

      @@squirrelman4000 trying to find any reason to mabey make the rebel larges somewhat playable. Only like a third of rebel ships are realistically playable and it sucks.

      @@ThePoliticalTroll its true and its mostly because people play Onagers. I try to avoid a rant but they are supremely bad for the game in pairs or triplets, they should be uniques at best...

      @@squirrelman4000 I wonder if we'll start to see rebels sink out of play and making top places. I'm constantly suprised that the playerbase doesn't shift to the obviously best thing.

      @@ThePoliticalTroll there are other things that are good, but more than that, playing the best thing risks winning lots of games based purely on list strength and not player skill, which pretty much defeats the point of playing a strategy game...

    Do you think a fleet with a venator pelta and consular with 8 or 10 y wings will defeat a onager fleet?

      It can, I have, but the issue is going to be closing quickly before you lose a bunch of support ships. The Pelta is a concern and the Consular only had 1 evade so Sensor Team Onagers deny them any damage reduction. The Vanator and squads would need to close with and kill the Onager before it kills more than its worth, which is doable but hard. Bid/1st or Second Player has a huge part to play in that discussion too.
