Honestly as a Christian myself and a music fan, this is honestly one of the greatest jazz albums of all time. I just listened to this album and honestly had left me speechless by the end, filled with love and soul in each track of A Love Supreme. Made me love God even more thanks to this beautiful album, and I wanna say thanks to John Coltrane for making such a great album 😊💝
@@stephensweeney4385 Man... I don't know... I guess because it was made as a suite, like a classical piece of Mozart and others. And Elvin's latin drum conduction... I really don't know how to explain it lol I can say to you that "A Love Supreme" is STILL another music level... one octave higher...
just listened to this album for the first time today ... it's insane how magical it still sounds. the drumming in particular, feels like it comes from another dimension.
Worthwhile comments on A Love Supreme. The recording session for A Love Supreme was improvised with only a one page listing on a sheet of paper indicating how each of the four songs was to be played. Amazing Trace. Truly amazing.
I pray the universe gives me a chance to listen to this glorious album one last time as I lay dying, waiting for the next chapter. That would be a good way to go.

Contrary to some opinions, things like this don't have to be understood to be fully appreciated. I was 17 years old when I first heard this record on a late-night CBC jazz radio program (thank you Katie Malik). To this day, A love Supreme gives me chills. Do I understand it? Probably not to the degree of the "experts" on the thread. Do I get it? Much like I get the pleasure/joy that the sunshine, ocean, wildlife brings, yup. Peace
I've been playing Guitar for many years .. I listened to the Love Supreme for the first time today .. I think I need to listen again .. its kind of fascinating lol
At some point, A Love Supreme is going to be analyzed from other than a Christian perspective. The fact is in his poem, liner notes or however you refer to them, Trane made no mention of Christ, only God, only God. Trying to understand this masterpiece without recognizing this fact is critical. There was no mention of one in three or anything that speaks of a trinity. The oneness of God, the creator and sustainer of creation, is his (Coltrane’s) focus and the inspiration for his improvisation and the message he was trying to creatively and artistically convey. Trying to place this in the context of a country preacher, a sermon, a call and response like a church renders it to be more emotional than spiritual. I humbly suggest that anyone interested to explore the oneness and preeminence of God as expressed in Islam. That concept is called ‘tawheed’ in Arabic and was not only the concept expressed here but was the name of a famous album by Phatoah Sanders ‘Tawhid’ one of the two Coltrane sidemen along with McCoy Tyner who were indeed Muslim.
Coltrane presented a small part of his philosophy in an interview in Japan. He said that he was raised with Christian traits but then he said; I quote: “I believe all men know the truth.” And that to ME is a very eastern way of putting it. To me that line quote sounds like Taoism or maybe some sort of Buddhism. And those religions can be interpreted very widely sooo. His philosophy was that all men know the truth, which to me is far away from religion, more closer to present.
best to assume it was a bad keystroke. I can't live on a planet with someone who would give this a thumbs-down, But at the same time, Free-dumb allows morons to have opinions too.
No, Coltrane was in a deep spiritual searching at that time, mainly with hindu classics, but also we can recognize his own Christian uprising and the Islamic ascent in the black american community of that era.

I would like to discuss how it did the same for you as a drummer

Well read, and well said Carl.
Coltrane was more of a Cosmist, or possibly a pantheist. He transcended the Abrahamic religions.
