Super Simple Arrangement of The Ballad of Jed Clampett

  • Here's a super basic version of the Beverly Hillbillies Theme song. You'll need three rolls, a couple of chords and some slides. If you've got Cripple Creek under your belt and you've been practicing on Foggy Mountain Breakdown, then you've got everything you need to play this version.
    Hopefully this makes up for the other "simple" version of Jed that I have out here.

    You make it look so easy. Un rushed. When played slow it sounds like a jumble of notes but as it speeds up it takes on a melodic quality and pretty soon voila it is a recognizable song. It’s so cool how that works.

    Dear Jim, I have finally bit the bullet and am now slowly learning from your wonderful videos. I am 56 and playing acoustic and electric guitar from the age of 11. With the banjo rolls, my brain keeps playing tricks, telling me all sorts of stupid things. But with your guidance I am getting there. I intend to play the ballad of Jed C at the Christmas table. Thats my next goal. Thank you again.

I really enjoy your videos but one thing I think would help viewers is if you played the song first and then did the breakdown. I have a question, Mr Panky. I love your lessons by the way. I got a banjo for my birthday and I've been learning for a couple weeks now. At about 3:09, during the Cripple Creek slide, it looks like you're sliding from 2 to 3 instead of 2 to 4, although it doesn't sound like it. Are you doing something special there to make it fancy? Just wonderin'! Thank you sir.

    • @JimPankey
      @JimPankey  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Sometimes I slide to 3... I'm reckless that way. You hear it going to 4 because of the 2nd string that comes right after it - sort of an auditory illusion.

    Hi Jim. I'm getting somewhere with this and appreciate all the really great lesson. The thing that is holding me back on this one - and on Wagon Wheel - is the 2-5 slide on string 4. I can do it okay, but it squels like a stuck pig and really covers up the sound of the slide as well as being very distracting. It's the nature of the wound string, of couse, but I don't hear this from real players, so do you have any tips for making string 4 slides smoother? Perhaps I just need to be wearing a Jim Pankey Tee Shirt.. :-)

      You can do it. You're just going to have to keep stretching. There are no shortcuts. I promise, had there been an easier way, I'd have shown it. It's not like I'm withholding information here.
      Find the first Live stream I did with Lisa Flores. It has a bunch of tips for your hands.

Might do it again a time or two (or fifty!) as I progress, for encouragement. Your method spoiled me- learned a song from tablature, but it took me 10 times (at least) as long as learning more difficult songs from you. If you figure out a time machine, please do a video on it- I want to start this at 16 instead of 65!!! Well, break time is over- and I think pinky grew a little!
