Yeah there is definitely a clear difference with both types of recordings. I like VGM files because of its convenience and also because the VGM player is heavily supported by Winamp where all my music is stored. Still, you are right, you can't beat the true hardware sound. I still play with headphones on my model 1.

Interestingly enough, game reviewers were not very happy with this game back in the day. Sega Genesis alone had a bunch of better racing experiences already, so that the only memorable aspect of this game had always been the soundtrack. It seems a bit more interesting now that we experienced the actual 2019 and it had nothing this game envisioned for it. It's a shame that year wasn't up to this game standards, and we actually went downhill from that year on. We're in a serious trouble.
Like alot of things most never liked I found was actually a great. I mean there's the ost, the power boost, multilevel glass bridges, backgrounds change with each route changes really puts the speed in perspective. While in 2019 going 200 mph isn't slowing down traffic but let's be honest, the average vehicle in 2019 is far quicker or faster than 1993. No jet boost,but nearly everything is intercooled turbo which was in special vehicles in late 80s early 90s.. not to mention the higher horsepower figures and 10 speed transmissions.
Without a modification model 2's tend to sound really bad in general. There are some exceptions but if you don't want to modify, get a model 1, pre VA7 (board revision). A MegaAmp installed in a model 2 doesn't make it sound identical to a model 1, but it is close. The main differences are small and only really audible to huge nerds like myself & a few of my regular listeners. :)
To get more specific: A model 2+ASIC YM3438, with a MegaAmp to bypass the terrible on-board amplifier is technically a bit better than a model 1, the FM waveforms have a higher resolution and the DAC is extended by a bit or two I think. It's a really minor difference with the exception of a handful of soundtracks.
Thanks for the awesome explanation! I grew up with an original Model 1 MegaDrive myself and loved that sound. . The vanilla Model 2 sound is just terrible but cool to know it can be remedied.
Has anyone ever remade these songs with modern instruments, preferably with the sound of the car blasting off at the start of the stage? Where's the engine noise, Dustin? This ain't no Tesla!

Everyone always asks the same question...where are the super fast cars with jet engines like in this game when its 2019 2020 or now 2021. Other than the fact its a game and imaginary, there never will be such cars to go as fast as a jet engine on it or hovering vehicles. The technology is there to do all of it, it has been there since the 80's and 90's. The issue is how do you enforce traffic laws and safety with these demon machines lol. There just is no way to enforce street laws for safety when using such a fast machine and technically up to a "jet engine" on a car being possible they have done it but many humans will pass out from the force of going such highs speeds. Did I mention not safe for the pedestrian? Cross walks would be pointless as well as pedestrian's would be the ones needing license to walk......
Did they _seriously_ expect that driving would change so radically in less than 30 years' time? I mean, sure, maybe the title "Junker's High" was good but deemed unsuitable, but why the need to _both_ shoehorn the OutRun name in _and_ make fools out of themselves by putting "2019" in it? WHY?
