NMIXX being the only kpop group to perform with an uncorrected microphone. How can you not feel even more proud? Before being called idols, they are singers. I love these girls.
*for 3rd gen and onwards, at least before 2013 there are many kpop performances with their perfect imperfections. TVXQ in their Bolero live performance for example. I really dislike how "fabricated" kpop performances are, so I agree Nmixx doing is a breath of fresh air.
Apparently Tiny Desk requirements are: perform your own songs, no in-ear monitors, use of shotgun mics with no post production, and all in one take. You can still appear on Tiny Desk if you do not meet any of these requirements, but the performance will be labeled "special" So what you hear in the video would be almost exactly as you would hear it as if were in your living room.
When they announced that they were not using in-ear monitors, I was even more impressed. If you haven't performed on stage in front of a band, you probably don't realize how difficult this performance is. I've been a performer, and I've been a live sound engineer for almost 30 years. The way this performance is staged, it makes the difficulty level extremely high. First, the members are very close to the band. When idol groups perform with bands, they always position the band, especially the drums, away from the members. The band is on an elevated stage, off to the side, or far behind the members (like on It's Live). That minimizes the sound of the band instruments and drums in the vocal microphones. It allows for post-production, like pitch correction or adding effects like reverb. In this small stage, all of that is impossible. Those shotgun mics are picking up a TON of band sound. In the choruses, the mix gets a little crunchy when the band gets louder. That's the band sound bleeding into six vocal shotgun mics. The band isn't even trying to play quiet. The drummer is playing with regular sticks, not rods (a type of drumstick that is quieter) and he's not holding back. There's no plexiglass sound barriers on stage. I rarely see idol groups performing like that. Second, with the band so close, and playing normally, the members can hear them. Idols usually perform with in-ear monitors, so they only hear a guide track, a click track, and each others' vocals. That's how they normally practice. In this stage, without in-ears, they have no guide track and no click track, so there's no pitch or rhythm reference. They are forced to listen to the band and adjust to them. Idols don't normally do that. Even on It's Live, they are playing to a click track. Here, the band arrangements are using jazz harmonizations that stray from the vocal melodies and the tempo is drifting organically. The arrangements for Dash and See That are particularly difficult. The members have to sing from memory, adjust on the fly, and just go for it. There's no net to catch or help them. You have to be very confident in your musical ability to pull that off as a vocalist. Third, idols are trained in "speech level" singing. Their normal singing vocal level is rarely above their normal speaking voice level. They belt sometimes, but that's usually just in spots. The Koreans favor a more pleasant, airy tone (especially JYP with the "half voice half air" technique). When you sing that quietly standing right in front of a loud drumkit, a loud sax player, and three instrument amps, you really need the isolation of in-ears to hear yourself. They are using stage monitors (speakers on the floor in front of them, pointed at them) to hear their own voices, but they are not as effective or clear. As a vocalist in this situation, you have to sing from internal pitch and have confidence to sing the notes from memory. You can't rely on hearing yourself perfectly, especially when doing close harmonies. This stage seems designed to take away all the normal "idol group sings live on stage" crutches and tricks that are common on shows like It's Live, Killing Voice, Sound Bomb, even IU's Pallette. Even Immortal Songs and Sketchbook are engineered and staged to give the option for post-production vocal tuning. I honestly don't know how anyone could design a live stage that was more difficult for an idol group.
A very excellent one! As a fan who's been listening to their songs since Sept. 2022 (I was 16 at that time, now 18 and pursuing college), I am speechless as to how far NMIXX have accomplished throughout their 2 years and a half in the KPOP industry. They really are breaking barriers, standards that were put in the industry that restrained most idols to freely express their musical prowess and not just idols, but also musicians. As an industry that also focuses on music, it's really disappointing to constantly see music shows with post-production practices, leaving no room for fanatics to really hear how skilled and talented their faves are. I was actually very overwhelmed when I first listened to their music, and still am now. I am a proud fan of NMIXX and I hope they succeed even further in being an monumental group worthy of being called as an epitome in the now-slightly-ruined K-pop industry.
I have been really confused reading various comments about their mics tbh, other people say since it is a shotgun mic, it only picks up whats infront of it and that even tho post processing is not possible, the mics had fx by default, some say compression etc. reading your comment actually made it clearer how amazing nmixx girlies are. 👏🎉
@@qingjiaa Professional microphones just detect sound, which is then routed to other devices (preamps, compressors, effect units, mixers) either virtually through software or to separate hardware units. The basics of professional audio haven't changed since the 70s. Mics don't have effects or compression in them (unless you are talking about those mics used in norebangs/kareoke). Professional audio engineers choose microphones based on the application, although the Koreans have also been known to choose microphones based on which ones look better on camera. (For example, the constant use of the Shure 55 "Elvis mic" in every 2nd/3rd gen idol MV, despite the fact that mic sounds terrible.) Shotgun mics are not magic, and there are a lot of tradeoffs/disadvantages to using them in this kind of application. They are intended to mount on stands in use for film/video shoots. They are not designed for people to sing directly into them at close range on stage. It probably took a lot of work to make them sound as good as they do in this live stage. But I'm sure they were selected to reject sound from the stage monitors on the floor in front of the members. Those mics were picking up sound from the members voices, but they were also picking up the sound from the band, plus the sound reflected off the set behind them; basically everything in a 90 degree cone where it is pointed. That's just the way they work.

It really is a testament to how skilled NMIXX are as they are the first idol group to be featured on Tiny Desk. Almost no voice tuning via post production, no in-ears, all in a single take and they killed it!! I really hope they perform more on this platform for future projects because we as listeners, don't get to experience true live vocals as much nowadays. Thanks for your reaction! JYP needs to jump on this and hire Jason Lee and the band so they can go on a US tour w/ NMIXX immediately!!! They have good chemistry and fun vibes! NMIXX should be one of the most popular kpop groups in the industry but I believe JYP is doing the slow approach and just training and improving on their talent on each comeback. What I've read is that the microphones will capture every sound with details. Not only the near sound from the direction of the microphone, but every sound, including other vocals and instruments. So they can only mix all the sounds and can not tune them individually. What we heard from this video is more real than ever.
the most amazing thing is that Nmixx had faulty microphones and they shot a video from one take. Everyone who previously performed here used microphones that correct vocals ("It's live" also processes the vocals of idols), they are the only ones who sang truly live without voice processing. The guy who plays the saxophone was also in the pre-debut video where Lily performed the song "Finesse"
I think those people or band who are playing behind them is their ‘OFFICIAL BAND’ (just like blackpink who has their own band) coz if i remembered correctly NMIXX perform on the big stage of MILAN when they perform cruel summer by taylor swift and on Kampfest Mexico when they perform despacito the band who played there was the same band here so yeah i think this band is NMIXX official band so that means we are going to get this type of vibe in their future project and live performances thru big stages, also a big thanks for JYPE/SQU4D for producing them this band and for utilizing their talent especially their vocals. This is a big slap for those who are saying that “jyp is wasting their talent and potential” lmao when literally NMIXX is setting the standards in kpop and being recognized as the best vocal group in 4th gen and one of the best vocal group as a whole kpop industry, this is NOT A WASTE OF TALENT!
There is no one in kpop whom I love as much as Nmixx. I recommend watching the new show with Lily (Issue club), it's very funny, at the moment my favorite show
All the shows the girls did this year have been amazing. Haewon killed it on Workdol, Bae's show where she role plays being a "fired idol" on ASAP Studio, and all the guest appearances between them really made me realize how rounded their entertainment skills are becoming.
No one else is doing it like this. Reminds me of how Mamamoo just routinely blew everyone out of the water with vocals as well. Just in a league all by themselves in terms of sheer skill Also just fyi, they are plugging one ear to increase the volume of the internal sound of their voice. It helps with pitch!
About Kyujin standing next to Haewon: I don't know the reason, but most official photos, interviews, and even in their behind videos when all six are properly doing a segment (edit: when they are standing in a line), its frequently this same formation: Lily, Jiwoo, Sullyoon, Bae, Kyujin, and Haewon. Once you notice it, you can't unsee it. Would love to know why tho xd
