As a radio professional, the mic technique you were using is my preferred method, and how I teach others to use the mic. i.e. the mic is pointed at your mouth, but your mouth is NOT pointed at the microphone! This negates the need for extra pop filters, although sometimes the extra pop filters can help keep a consistent distance from the mic. If you need the bass-doubling effect of close-micing, don't use the external pop filter, just use this mic technique and you can get right up on the mic without popping.

For the music part, I had to add a little or else the frequencies build up and get very annoying. For field recording, I generally leave the sound unchanged. Looks like it lacks some bass, compared to UA DLX. However Bai Fei Li C-414 is also available as a 34mm diaphragm version, that one probably works even better.
Yes. You’re right, but the DLX is an insanely good mic and the best emulating mic ever - not to mention very expensive. I haven’t tried the 34mm version, and I don’t expect to - BFL isn’t the most cooperative company to deal with. Haha.
Great review…. fellow Canadian! I tried one of those BM800 mic packages and it was terrible and rattled. Complete garbage. Now, why shouldn’t there be a $50 mic copy of a c414 that works and sounds good? Ya…. why not.

@@TheRecordist yep I watched all of Marks videos to determine which capsule size his had. Because who knows, the bigger capsule could be a completely different quality and from a different manufacturer
It cracks me up that nobody seems to have any AKG C414B vs Bai Fei Li tests. I'm sure if I put it up against my black & gold TLII from 1989 you would DEFINITELY hear why it costs 40whatever dollars.
Well, for starters, I don’t have an AKG, C414B to compare. Because if I did, you can be sure I would have compared them. Secondly, there is no way on earth that the BFL sounds anything like a real C414. The point, for me, was not that it sounded like a C414. It was that it sounded better than many mics ten times its price.
Come on, truthfully, are we listening with our eyes? If it was in a BM-800 body would we even be having this discussion? The DLX blew it away. You got a like and a subscribe because you were quite entertaining.
Of course the DLX blew it away. It’s also $1500 as opposed to $50. It’s like 4% of the price. Many people can’t afford $1500. Many people can’t afford $200. So this is a way to get something pretty decent for very little money. That’s the point of this.
@The Time Preservation Society if you want a quality condenser mic for low bucks I suggest a Behringer B5 pencil mic for $68. I have two of them which I boom over guests on the couch and it makes a decent broadcast mic if that's all you've got in your bag
@@djtommykeys haha. Well those certainly are mics. A good price too. But a lot different than a large diaphragm condenser mic. Those are small diaphragm condensers. I believe those mics have cardioid and Omni capsules. That’s a great price for something so versatile. As far as quality goes, I have no idea. I haven’t played with those ones, but my gut says they’re about as good as the Røde M5’s. But what do I know. I fully expected to hate the Bai Fei Li C414, but here we are. Apples and oranges, I think.
@@TheRecordist At 78 dB A-weighted if Behringer can be believed it outperforms the Rode M5. If capsule size was the defining factor no one would have a Sennheiser MKH 416 in a vocal booth. Hi, can you help the newbie that i am, between the nt1 signature series and this cheapie what mic should i buy for high vocals singing ? Thanks by advance, super vids your doing !
Hi there. Thanks very much! If I had to choose between the Røde NT1 or the BFL C-414, I might choose the NT1. The reason is because Røde has a 10 year warranty and the NT1 is a good mic that can take EQ very well. To be clear, I do NOT mean the NT1a. That mic is total garbage. The BFL C-414 is a good mic as well, and if it’s all you can afford, it will do just fine. Hope this helps!

Yep. Bound to happen. I’ve been watching it go up and down in price for a while. At $100, I’m not sure it’s worth it. But $85 is at the upper edge of a good price for it.
Sounds like Bai Fei Li is a bit noisier in the pauses, compared to UA DLX. Maybe next time you can provide 1-2 seconds of silence for both :P. I have recently realized that the MIC's self noise is actually (obviously) dispersed across the audible frequency spectrum, such that some MICs have a higher pitch self-noise and some not. I am not sure this is a parameter which can be reviewed in an easy/swift fashion (especially if the audience does not care much about it), but having e.g. the Audacity "Spectrum Plot" comparison between the two MICs (for the silence section) would be really useful for some of us. Thanks for the review.
I didn’t find it very noisy at all. And there’s a part of the video where I was debating with myself about where the noise level truly is and I was taking some small pauses. I used no post processing at all, so this video is straight 414. However, you have a good point. Ideally I would do a proper test in an anechoic chamber, but alas, I don’t have access to one. Maybe I can MacGyver one up and see what I can do. If you email me at the-tps@protonmail.com, I’ll try to prepare a sample of both for you and send it to you via Dropbox or something. The headphones are awesome, and I use those every day myself. The interface is great. The mic is world famous and every studio has at least one. All of these items are a good investment. Sound proofing isn’t as important as reverberation in your room. Try to minimize sound bouncing around your room by filling it with soft things. This one I like.....sounds really good for the money. What about for music though? Ah... There it is... Not really a natural choice for the guitar but good on your voice! @@TheRecordist ok. Question. What's the capsule size of the one you reviewed? Apparently there are two...one I believe is a smaller 25mm capsule and the other, I believe is 34mm?
@@ramspencer5492 well I reviewed both on this channel, but simply put, the larger one is smoother, and the smaller one picks up more transients. So, depending on what you prefer, those are the differences. I will say that the 25mm is more of an electret condenser while the 34mm is a true condenser.
I see several similar YT demos of these mics but I've yet to see any demos using them as "studio" mics. I would love to know if anyone has any experience using them as drum OHs? It sounds decent on your acoustic guitar demo, but it's really hard to tell what it would do on a higher SPL source like drums. Anyone?
Hey. Well first I would have to know if you need a condenser or dynamic mic. If you: 1) Have a reverberant (echoey) room. 2) A noisy place (street noise outside) or pets or kids or roommates or any other noise) 3) Intend on talking very close into the mic. Then you need a dynamic. But if you: 1) Have carpet and a lot of stuff on your walls and in your room absorbing the reverberation. 2) Cannot hear traffic. Have no kids or pets or people making noise. 3) Will not be speaking directly into the mic Then you can use a condenser. Do you already have a recorder or interface?
@TheRecordist I have a Maono AMC2 sound card and also a Maono PD100 microphone, but it was damaged by the phantom power of the sound card... Yes, I have noise in my room, but I really want to move to a condenser microphone, and I think filters will do the job done right?
@@ppuniisher1559 well, you’re asking an audio pro about fixing it in post. The answer is to never leave it for software to fix. But if you don’t mind glitchy or artifacty audio and want a condenser anyway, and you want it super cheap, the Bai Fei Li C-414 (24mm capsule) or the V10 will work. The V10 has more self noise.
Hi...it´s me Thulsa...Doom...my dear Conan. Let´s say the the Bai Fei Li costs 50 Quid. Of course! Some mics sound great of some people are terrible on others-and that includes expensive ones too. The Neumann U87 is a famous mic but sounds terrible on some people. Ah yes. Herein lies the conundrum. The box the mic came in says BF-414, yet the mic itself says “C-414”. So I have no idea. And asking them which is the correct one is troublesome because they agree it’s called both things. So I guess it’s Schrodinger’s Microphone.

Hey, have u tried the at2020? Do you think the c414 is better? I want to buy someone of these two for vocal records. Nice video btw.
Hey thanks! The AT2020 is a decent low priced mic, it might be a bit better than the C414 but the C414 has a little bite that I enjoy and the AT2020 doesn’t have that. I wish I had a 2020 here to test out for you, but alas, I do not.
Alright buddy, I'm gonna let you have it. That song is stupid good and your vocals were really solid. Which is silly because I'm sure you just wrote that for this little microphone demo. 😂 Bravo and great content. Subscribe.

Ya…. why not.

Great review. Simple question. AT2020 or Bai Fei Li C414?
The AT2020 is a nice cheap mic. I happen to really like the BLF C414 more. But I cannot vouch for the quality control. The AT2020 will have much better quality control. So it’s up to you. The BFL is a risk, but it’s a small risk. Hope this helps!
@@TheRecordist Thank you, bro. That was a really prompt answer. In the meantime and while I work hard for a genuine AKG C414, how true is it that the AKG c212 is the same thing on a single polar pattern? Thanks for your time.

In my opinion, the AKG C-214 is a different mic than the C-414XLS OR XLII. The C-214 is much cheaper made and is excessively bright-almost brittle. While it’s not a terrible mic, it’s sometimes hard to tame the harshness. Hope this helps!

@@TheRecordist Interesting. I've been using the CAD m179s for a while as a stand in for c414 on drum overheads and toms, thinking that I'll get another pair of c414s "when I can afford them", but that moment grows more and more distant, especially with all these decent cheap mics available.

@@jasonmeyermusic5639 oh the cheapest way is probably the Clarity Vx by Waves. The cheap one. Not the pro. I think it’s like $29 and one dial takes out the noise.

But for the record… the DLX is the undisputed champ. Haha.

LMFAO are you kidding me?? The C414 is my absolute dream but my goodness is this insane. I mean holyshit
I know eh? Hahaha. It blew my mind.
Thanks for watching!

Hey. Well first I would have to know if you need a condenser or dynamic mic.
If you:
1) Have a reverberant (echoey) room.
2) A noisy place (street noise outside) or pets or kids or roommates or any other noise)
3) Intend on talking very close into the mic.
Then you need a dynamic.
But if you:
1) Have carpet and a lot of stuff on your walls and in your room absorbing the reverberation.
2) Cannot hear traffic. Have no kids or pets or people making noise.
3) Will not be speaking directly into the mic
Then you can use a condenser.

But if you don’t mind glitchy or artifacty audio and want a condenser anyway, and you want it super cheap, the Bai Fei Li C-414 (24mm capsule) or the V10 will work. The V10 has more self noise.

Of course! Some mics sound great of some people are terrible on others-and that includes expensive ones too. The Neumann U87 is a famous mic but sounds terrible on some people. It’s always a hit and miss. The best way to test mics is to rent them and then see how they are. If you like it, then you can buy it.

Ah yes. Herein lies the conundrum. The box the mic came in says BF-414, yet the mic itself says “C-414”. So I have no idea. And asking them which is the correct one is troublesome because they agree it’s called both things. So I guess it’s Schrodinger’s Microphone.
