I has a Canadian customer ask me to mail a postcard that way. She said people do it from US all the time.
I said sorry, I need tracking on all my shipments. I didn’t even consider this aspect so good to know. My desire for tracking saved me but great to know Don!

I don't do international global shipping and I agree with everything you said. eBay will soon do sellers if they step out of line anyway, but little is still done to stop buyers on the platform from scamming sellers. Thank you, Don. Charles in the UK

I've never run across that, but 20 years ago I sold a $200.violin to a guy in Canada- As soon as he paid, he asked if I would declare it at parts value, $1. Heck, no.

Yes, and the same applies to exporting from Europe as it is international laws from the Postal Union, like you've said. That's why many people consider my shipping is considered expensive. To be able to ship with a tracking number, no less then 7$. Unfortunately, many, if not most of people that export from Europe, especially postcards aren't going by the rules. And that's why they can get cheap postage.

I sold a 12” cabinet photo the other day for 15$ free shipping, I thought maybe it would get bid up. It didn’t. I put it in an old book for safe shipping, I thought hey I’ll ship it media mail, but then I thought nope I use usps to much to mess up my ethics.

Good to know! I still have ptsd from shipping internationally. Nowadays I will not ship internationally unless a buyer begs me, and I will only ship priority with tracking(unless the buyers feedback is insanely good).

I always use ebay international shipping and I don’t have anything that small that I sell so I’ve never considered doing this. I was completely unaware of this rule so I appreciate the information incase I ever do. Thank you!!! 😊

This is a good point. I haven’t done international shipping, but was considering doing so. That being said, as a UK seller, I had a USA seller absolutely berate me for not charging him a standard letter rate. It was a big nope from me. It’s put me off I must say. Here, I believe it is a case of declaring value for customs, meaning buyer may have to pay more on the back end.

In Europe you have also a license if your buisness you put packaging material into circulation. You have to pay an annual fee for every country you are going to ship to. Thats why i only sell to customer from in Germany. Had a discuss just to day with a foreign customer, why I cannot ship to his country.
The worst while exporting merch outside the EU was to find the right HS Code.

I tens to keep 100% feedback too because I take care of my customers and I ship in way to make sure that they get there is the best shape as possible. Not all sellers do that. I also have had people suggest that I ship stuff for a couple dollars that I know can't be shipped that way .. and tell them that I can't do that. Shipping in way to avoid shipping costs cam get your item returned too for insufficient postage or having the customer have to pay the difference in shipping on their end.

Yup. I treat it as the same way I would a request to ship to a different address than what the user has listed.
Cancel the sale and block the buyer, postal shenanigans = fraudulent buyer.

Over the years I have done so few international shipping, that for reasons and strange requests and other problems (having numerous packages simply send back to me for no reason,,
I quit doing international as for me, it just wasn't worth it.
But, I do understand that depending on each sellers categories, many sellers do very well with selling international selling.

Yeah, you mentioned the matches. I've listed and sold several of those. I had someone ask just last week if I could just put them in regular envelope and charge them less for shipping. I told them I could if they wanted me to remove the matches. Apparently they wanted the book with the matches and were not willing to pay the approximate $5.00 for shipping the legitimate way, so no sale. That's fine with me, I don't need to deal with that. It's just too bad I have to waste my time responding to people like that.

Regular envelope overseas ... awww heckno. No customs form, no sale. Even a Christmas gift needs one. A plain old Christmas or birthday card doesn't, since once a new card is written in the value goes to zero. If it's a piece of paper inside a greeting card and a true gift, once in a blue moon is safe. Doing it for profit... DO NOT DO IT.

Thanks for the info. How do you like the E bay exporting where you send in the item you sell and they export it? I took my few listings off international shipping. Seeing you makes me want to get busy listing again for US sales.

I sell about 20% of my items internationally and I am very strict with buyers. Most do what they need and they are no problem. The rest buy and start right away with can you declare this x or y and no I can’t and won’t. I sell a lot of movies and you can tell when something is banned in a country it will get you a ton of inquiries.

Ebay handles this through their international shipping, yes? I send those packages to a US based shipping site and figured all this is handled before they leave that location. Please let me know if that's wrong!

It’s sad because it’s the users with lots of feedback who will insist on shipping internationally via envelope. They always say that everyone is doing it, and that’s why I’m missing out on the sales. They forget to mention that it’s illegal. Maybe I should just start linking them to this video

Yikes. I remember 20 years ago sending a toy pony comb to a friend in a card. It was sold, it was a gift. Nothing ever came of it and at the time I didn’t think k much of it but I wonder now how I would go about this rather then sending it in a card
