My friend, this video is a treasure! As a life long Kentite, it's amazing to ride through my childhood again. I only wish you could see the town now! Some things are EXACTLY the same... and some things are EXACTLY completely different!
Thanks for sharing this. I graduated from Kent in 1979 so this brought back good memories about how Kent used to look. I liked the way it was back then so much better. Progress? Great forethought to document Kent during this time.
Your videos of my home town are priceless. I never want to leave this place, was born in 92. Love seeing old footage and newer. Crazy how fast time flies huh?
nice video good picture quality I really enjoyed this video thanks for sharing it I wasn't born until 81 unfortunately I would take those years over today's years I like watching old classic videos from the 70s and 80s I've never been to Kent State University but it look really nice in the video I've had some friends have been to Kent State but I've never been there myself
Über cool! Robert Smithson's earth sculpture .. that sadly KSU got rid of... And at around 5:04 you can see one of my roommates truck. His truck was like an aqua color and a piece of crap. He said I could use it to move my stuff home when I left Kent before going off to grad school...but I loaded it up and I saw it was leaking gas! He said oh yeah he was driving it like that for weeks... I didn't want to blow up so rented a uhaul. Anyway so bizarre to see this in the video..
In reality there were incredibly high interest rates in 1980. Hardly a position of strength. The early 1980s recession in the United States began in July 1981 and ended in November 1982. One cause was the Federal Reserve's contractionary monetary policy, which sought to rein in the high inflation. In the wake of the 1973 oil crisis and the 1979 energy crisis, stagflation began to afflict the economy
Bill Lang? Charlie Brill was a great guy and professor. He gave me ,many tips in shooting photography and film development. That last building you called the shed in the video was the remnants of the burned barn, 1969. Many of the roads you traveled on are no longer there or have been changed. The purr of your VW engine brings back good memories.
Thanks Terry. Did we know each other at KSU? I graduated in '71. Did you know Cory Lash? He is the Narrator. There is also a 1987 drive thru Kent also. (th-cam.com/video/n9d-ZjRnHk0/w-d-xo.html) I'm on Facebook too if you want to stop by. WIlliam A. Ling
I don't believe we knew each other. When Charlie mentioned your names I thought they sounded familiar but I may be mistaken. I have a problem with names sometimes but good recollection of faces. I began at KSU Spring Quarter 1969. I didn't finish school. When the campus closed down I needed to find a job because my GI Bill helped supplement my income. Being a member of the Veteran's Association some of us found employment as Security with the Campus Police Department. I watched your video from 1987 a few years ago and left a comment. This town and the people have changed many times over.
Well, we were there at the same time. I was a Journalism major, so I was around Taylor Hall a lot. About the only people I have had any continuing touch with have been Paul Tople and Mike WIlliams. Thanks for your comments Terry. I hope life has been good to you.
I commuted from my parents home in Warren to campus for Spring quarter 1969 majoring in Secondary Education. At 22 y.o. my parents curfew was not agreeable to me. They only provided me room and board while I worked part time to supplement my GI Bill. Moved to Kent that summer. Most of my time around Taylor Hall was spent on Blanket Hill smooching the coeds. I started school 1975 part time and that's when I met Charlie Brill. After working six months for the KSU PD as Security I applied for a job. I was sent to OSHP Academy. I retired from KSU PD in 1993. Life has been good and not so good. Mostly good though. Wish a lot of my old friends were still around but fortunately I have more. Hope life has been good to you also.
Nice trip down memory lane! This was my last year of college at Kent. I see my old favorite lunch time haunt (Arby's) and miss Captain Brady's! Now it's a damn Starbucks. Love the leisure suits too! God, our clothes were lame!! LOL
Charles Brill not only my B/W photo professor but a good friend. Bill Lane, Laign seems like I know you. Would've been a hoot to see Jerry's Diner. N. Water St. has changed establishments often but the scenery is much the same as it was when I dropped into this town in 1969. Loop Circle? Its been Hilltop Drive since I can remember. Great video though.
Wow, how cool to see video from the actual year I was a student there. I lived in Koonce Hall at Tri-Towers on the 10th floor. Wish I would have followed through and graduated from KSU, but for the year that I was there - it was the best experience. Enjoyed my time at the Rat, Filthy McNasty's, and other bars. If I wasn't in a dark bar, you'd find me in the darkroom at Taylor Hall developing film and making prints. It was good to see Charlie Brill - just as I remembered him. Thanks for uploading this video ... you brought back a lot of good memories.
I lived on the 6th floor of Koonce Hall in 1980. I def remember the Rat and that terrible 3.2 beer. I also remember being there for the tenth anniversary of the shootings.
I lived in Verder Hall and had many friends in Tri- Towers... Rat, The Exit Club, The Loft, Robin Hood... at the time there were 57 bars in Kent. Whoo- hoo!
Matt Strelock for real though, just leaving kent from orientation the other week i was in the right lane on main going straight and someone in the lane left to me cut me off pretty bad
Nice to see Kent again, but it sure hasn't changed much since I was there, especially the main drag. What I remember most about it was, Kent back in the day was a biker bar rowdy ass town. lol Not sure about today as its been since the 70's when I was last there, but for a town its size, it had allot of action. lol
Almost 14000 views, amazing. Thanks for your kind comments. You did see the 1987 revisit video didn't you all? th-cam.com/video/n9d-ZjRnHk0/w-d-xo.html
Ohio's heyday was during the Gilded Age. In the late 1800s it was a very populous and powerful state full of manufacturing. And Presidents used to come from Ohio. The entire state has been dying a slow death for decades.
grad in '77 - good to see the campus, etc. how it was then - lot of money spent and buildings built since - Kent-Spirit!
Wow! What memories. Thank you!!!
My friend, this video is a treasure! As a life long Kentite, it's amazing to ride through my childhood again. I only wish you could see the town now! Some things are EXACTLY the same... and some things are EXACTLY completely different!
Jesus-- I watch this and I am back. I love this Kent-- it's my Kent.
Thanks for sharing this. I graduated from Kent in 1979 so this brought back good memories about how Kent used to look. I liked the way it was back then so much better. Progress? Great forethought to document Kent during this time.
JD's and the Rendevous! I have not been back since leaving in 1972. This is WILD! Thank you!
I go down to Kent every week. This was where my Parents met. 🐩
How nice to see all those cars alive! A unique time! Nostalgic greetings from Argentina 👍
I was there. OMG, it brings back so many good and bad memories.

Indeed it does! Thanks for your nice comment.
6:35. Dude's a baller. I just graduated from Kent in 2013. It's so nice to not see ugg boots, yoga pants and cell phone zombies walking around campus.
I guess you don't like yoga pants?
The old Kent State Buses...wow
I miss my boyhood town of Kent

It's so fascinating and weird seeing what Kent looked like back then

American cars everywhere !!!!! when our country was strong
Jay Finn ...i really miss those old cars.
80s was when the import scene started happening in the usa.

Third generation Kentite. Parents moved to Stow where I grew up but was back in Kent by 1971 and still here.
My hometown...I was born May 1980
I didn’t want it to end! This is how I remember Kent. My daughter goes there now and I get lost because I dont recognize anything anymore. Lol
Well watch this one from 1987. th-cam.com/video/n9d-ZjRnHk0/w-d-xo.html

The Brady roll was to die for.
Going down N. Water Street and seeing those empty lots where I spent many hours there fighting fires.

cool to see how Kent was when I was 6 years old.
As a current student, It's awesome to see how everything has changed. I'm just bummed the video ran out before you got to the front of campus!

I was 15yo at that moment. I remember DeMARI'S (The Godfather) now we have Subway (BMT). Thanks for sharing this!
My pleasure. When I started working for Campus Camera, it was located in the De Mari's building.
@@macmaven I bought my first 35mm SLR from Rex. Quite the salesman.
Except where it has... Thanks DrB.
Wasn't around to see it, but it looked better back then.

Wow! Arthur Treacher’s Fish and Chips Shop on the corner there at 2:58
People still don't know that both left lanes on the 59 and main split are left turn lanes only...
Matt Strelock for real though, just leaving kent from orientation the other week i was in the right lane on main going straight and someone in the lane left to me cut me off pretty bad
Thank you ;pve bug for the video
That Arby’s sign will survive the apocalypse
I'm guessing this is spring of 1980? I started at Kent in the Fall of '80. Thanks for the video.
No SUVs in traffic
They didn't exist!
I was 15 years old then. AC⚡️DC Back in Black
Do you have any videos where you can hear either of the electronic bell systems that KSU had?
No, sorry.

Good ole portage county. Im from nelson ohio
HI , Cool video , I used to live in the Kent area , very interesting , do you still make videos , thanks for sharing
Thanks for the comment. I shoot mostly stills these days, with clips while on vacation. (see th-cam.com/video/eso1MWuWmOc/w-d-xo.html)
"I thought a dollar a gallon was outrageous"
Are they through shooting students in that college?
I wonder where they are now

Filthy McNasty's was my hangout in '83.
I didn’t know they had camcorder in 80.
More of a camera and recorder combo. Recorder weighed 18 lbs. and the camera about 5. It was a Quasar if you are interested.
Old Arby's and Red Barn cool
Don't forget about that spinning Arthur Treachers lantern sign! 2:51
Kent Stage at 3:27
Classic Charlie Brill! LOL!
Go Flashes!
is this washington?
NO, Kent Ohio. HOme of Kent State University.
Too bad you missed Jerry's diner.
We always called it 'Jerry's Circus,' lol!
And how could they miss Ray's place -- a major landmark in Kent?
3:07 people still do this in 2019 please stop going straight in the left turn lane
Sorry, I didn't notice the worn arrow in that lane.
@@macmaven I'm just joking, friend. It's just funny that over the years some things never change
@@conn3r81 I was just used to going straight from that lane since before that crossroad existed. We're still good CONN3R.
Why no Filthy Mcnasty's?
Nope, not in 1980.
Ho lee shit its hardly changed
