    That was a great show of different kites. Well done to Peter for his sewing improvements to the rocket and box kite. Just took note of the nice gift he made you Jim. I love that lifter with its new tails Peter.

      Glad you enjoyed the show, Carl. Peter is always keen to make each kite the best it can be.

    Lovely display Jim! Peter is a very talented kite maker and as some others have already mentioned, it would be interesting to see how he builds them!

      I doubt if Peter would want that shown, but I'll mention it.

    Nice video Jim. Great display of kites. Flow tails are always beautiful. Carls Rocket is cool. Thanks Jim!

      Glad you enjoyed it, Dewey. Not Carl's Rocket, it's Peter's Rocket, but I'm sure Carl would like to have it.

      No problem. They are both keen kite-fliers, and Carl has been known to make a kite or two also.

    a very good variety & show. The yellow, black & white kites I found to be very interesting...it reminded me of the all white ghost kites here.

      Yes, the flowtails come in many styles, and I have a lot of different ones.

    I really enjoyed seeing those stacked flow tails. Inspires me to design/make a ten stack of smaller ones....

      Glad you enjoyed it, David. The Goldfish is not to everyone's taste, but in a light breeze it's a good flier.

    I really like my goldfish, but yes, it wants a certain wind speed. Too much Nd it begins to misbehave. It’s cool to a point, as it looks like it’s swimming, but then it just doesn’t fly straight. In that regard, the newer ones seem to fly much better. Good to see the small Cody. I haven’t flown mine in a while. I’ll have to dig it out again.

      @JimNicholls  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think your fish is better than mine, Ken, as mine was one of the very early ones, but they all seem happier in a light wind for sure.

    Is that the North Beach Surf Lifesaving Club in the background? That's a nice piece of beach you've got to fly kites from.

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  ปีที่แล้ว

      It is, Steven. Yes, the beach is good, although at high tide there's very little of it and we often have a problem with out-of-control dogs. Other than that, it's great and ideal for kite-flying.

    Wonderful day flying kites! Love that ultra foil - solid a rock - what type and strength line do you use and do you usually fly with a tail? That Cody seem to be bouncing around a bit.

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jim, I use 300lb braided dacron on the UF, and always leave the tail attached. I know you've had your eye on that for a while, but ITW still haven't put it back into production, and the only way to get one is from the designer, Ray Merry, at Cobra Kites, who will make a custom one on request, I believe.

  • @michaeloxman3820
    @michaeloxman3820 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Jim - I have the same Cody, and in anything more than a light wind one of the long wings bends and the kite dives. Is there something I can do to make it steadier? Thanks, and thanks for the video!

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Michael, I think the construction is too flimsy for anything more than a light wind, and it was at its limit here. If you have access to some stiffer spars, that would make it more capable in a stronger breeze, but I don't think I'll bother with mine.

    Does Peter have any videos on how to build kites? I can't seem to find any how to videos for kite making.

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, he doesn't, Armando, and I doubt if he's planning on doing any. There are lots of videos, but mostly by Asian people showing kites made of bamboo and plastic. There are some good ones, though, of you search carefully. Here are two by Andrew Newton in Australia: th-cam.com/video/R-qHQ7R-JUY/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/aYAB80QSzpc/w-d-xo.html and one from Graham Vaughan in England: th-cam.com/video/F15TBATR--A/w-d-xo.html .

      Hard to say. My two Bora 7 kites are quite reliable even in strong wind, and you'll see one in a video going up later in the week. If the wind is too gusty then any kite is going to have trouble staying up.
