Every time I buy a new vehicle, the first thing I do is drive straight home and learn how to jack up and change the tire. NO two vehicles were ever the same. The worst is the MINI Cooper. It's a pain in butt trying to align the pad with the jacking points on the car. VW makes it easier: just line it up with the vertical fence under the chassis and up it goes.
Dude! You are awesome for posting this. Bought my truck new in 2017, and never gave much thought to having to change a flat. At 63 years of age, I have changed so many I assumed it would be straight forward when the time came. So naturally went to the owner’s manual and it was useless for really explaining the lowering of the spare. The key points you provided were inserting the flared end at an angle and turning that bracket 90 degrees. No mention of either in the manual. Seriously, people like yourself restore my faith in humanity. Many thanks!
Have a 2017 Ram and the same for @smulherin1. At 75 I have owned a series of Rams but never have used a spare. The manual was useless. You took all the frustration out of lowering the tire to access some wiring.
I am a first time Dodge owner getting ready for our first road trip. This was on my mind to be prepared and know how to do it with this truck for peace of mind before heading out. Fantastic!!!!! Thank you SO much!!
Lol,on the profane utterances……I know the feeling…….I got lucky and made it to a heated garage to do mine, I couldn’t see doing this on the side of a freeway with ice and snow………hahahaha
Thank you, sir. Ended up with a flat tire, and I couldn't figure out for a life of me how to get spare tire down until I watched your video. Life saver. Thank you again!
Getting ready for a trip next week and thought I'd run thru some details. Good thing I did. Spare was flat and the tool kit release nut was frozen. I strongly suggest that owners do some rehearsal. That retaining nut under the seat can be a butterfly nut that is one-piece on a threaded shaft that runs down through the floor into a bolster. The threads will be rusted and can be very hard or impossible to turn. I had to use channel locks to get a hold on the ears and get it turning. If it's a hex nut, be sure you have a wrench to fit or it might not be going anywhere. If yours has the solid shaft, you should take it out and clean the threads and coat them with bearing grease. Save yourself additional heartache when you're on your knees in the rain somewhere. Keep a small flashlite to spot the square nut that the sectioned rod end drives onto. Feeling for it the dark is no bueno because the rod sections are loose and it's hard to get a feel for where the end is inside the body - unless you've done it before. The little square hole next to the port is a good spot to shine the light into while you sight down the rod thru the port. Simple. Very helpful video. Thank you.
Thank you @OutnBacker! Going on a road trip and checked out what you say here. I had to use penetrating oil and used a screw driver for leverage on that "wing nut" for practice. NOI WAY I would have gotten that loose by hand. Thanks for the heads up!
You're the man, I got a random stray key in my tire yesterday and I found the release mechanism but had NO IDEA how to manipulate it, I also had no idea the side panel of the seat came off that easy, i've been trying to get the tools out from under the seat lock bar and that sucks 😂😂😂 thanks for the video!
Just a tip, if you have locking lug nuts you may have a lock on your spare as well we ran into this. There will be a star pattern instead of a nut where you stick the rod in to lower the tire. There should also be a piece in your glove box with your lug key that will fit into your flare end and you insert that into your lowering device.
OMG, thanks for adding this tip! I read the manual and unless I missed the obvious, it failed to mention the locked spare/key!!! This saved us as we were on our way to deliver a dumpster when catching a flat!!! THANKSSSSSSSSS AGAIN
Thanks for sharing with us. Went on a trip recently, with a horse and trailer, had a rear tire that went very low. Luckily there was a tire place right where I came off the interstate! I was scared because I bought the used truck months earlier and had no idea how to get the spare down. You were very thorough with this procedure.
Thank you. 😂 I always had F150’s so it’s under the back seat. So when I didn’t see it there in the Dodge Ram. I was pissed I was about to go to the dealer and fuss with them for selling me a car without the Jack. Decide to check on TH-cam first. 👍🏽👍🏽. Good video
Thank you sooo very much for this video. As a single woman driving a RAM, I felt soo vulnerable before watching this video, but I feel educated now and empowered to be able to handle this task now! Lord Jesus bless you and your channel! 🙏
Thanks. Its that last part with taking the bracket away from the spring and turning it 90 degrees. 10 years of dirt and everything is almost cemented together down there!
If your truck is a few years old good luck turning that nut, especially if you live in a cold climate where the roads get salted. Had a flat in my 2013 Ram a couple years ago. Tried to drop the spare down and that nut was completely seized up to the point where the rods were twisting and bending. Could't get it to break loose. Didn't have enough leverage with those cheap rods that come with the jack. I've always thought this was a poorly designed system but yet every year truck that comes out still has this set up. Luckily I was home and the tire went flat over night or I would have been stranded somewhere. Just a tip: Now in my new Ram I lower the spare and raise it back up a couple times a year just to keep that nut moving so it doesn't seize up like my in last truck.
Good job bro, changing my daughter's rear shocks and need to remove the tire to get at the top bolt on the drivers side. Live in the rust belt hope it's as easy as your video. Thank You
So awesome. Thank you! Someone just followed me off the highway to tell me my spare was hanging down and wobbly so to get someone to look at it. My 1st thought was what you're shop would be open on Sunday? Then I found your video and problem solved in minutes. Thanks!!
Thank you for the video, the steps you showed were easy to follow and explained well. Thanks also to Wayne Geordiesdad for giving the tip on keeping the valve stem up.
thanks for the help ... old guy doing it alone .. lack of strength and muscle tone .. physically demanding for personal physicality ... but I have great courage and can do attitude .... will tackle next step with enthusiasm giving my best shot knowing quite well I may fail ......... tw
Great video....thank you. By the way, just to avoid future problems the tire should be stored valve up...protected by the bed and not down as you have yours as it will get filled with road-crap. Cheers from Canada North from an old mechanic
the tool does not fit in to the lowering socket, any ideas? when i peer into the hole on the bumper, it looks like a tamper proof lug nut but the female end..... at a loss
@@PYR-Auto yeah i found that in a comment afterwards. Too bad the previous owner/dealer didnt leave the key there. Had to take the flat wheel to get repaired while the truck sat on jack stands.
Is there a way to secure the spare to make it more difficult for a casual thief to steal? It doesn’t look like locking lug nuts or anything like that can be attached.
Owned my truck for 4 years now. Pulled out the jack just to do some preventive maintenance and "learn" how it all worked so I'd be prepared under combat conditions. Well here I am! I know...its in the manual but who reads directions these days.
Not sure on actual the max. weight but it's a metal winch and chain so I wouldn't worry about a couple extra pounds - as long as the aftermarket wheel still fits up under the vehicle
The flat tire wont fit back on the reserve spot. The hole on the middle of your actual wheel is too small for the metal piece on the hoist end to fit through.
It was a great video. I tried to put the extension with the hook in the hole, before I saw the video. What is the hook for? I have a 2020 Ram limited . Again great video, glad I found it.
Appreciated but not same 2013 2500 hd has connectors to frame of passenger seat small difference I know but owners will have to reach under and pull all 4 components (to drop tire) individually
Apparently me and my wife just got screwed. We bought a 2016 big horn in 2017 and it was the rental version truck, had 13000k miles on it. Apparently it had a flat previously and they never put the star tup extension piece back in. I callesnthe service department to get a new one they said they are all unique and I'd have to pay to remove the star lock and install a new one and buy a new star tip kit. Is this true? Are they all unique star tips?
I can't say on a 2017 big horn specifically but I have had similar issues on other vehicles where the unique wheel lock was lost and needed to be removed and a new one installed
hi just wondering about that cable can it be removed ? If so I just don't want it rattling afterwards . I live in Canada nothing worse then having to change a tire in a snow bank in the winter . I want to put spare tire in the back of truck box.

Best tutorial so far. Couldn't have been anymore straight forward and to the point while explaining all of it. Well done
Thank You!
lol right..... videos like this are rare on TH-cam. no intro. no music. no unnecessary chatter.

if it has a wheel lock (tamper proof) nut on it there may be the "key" for it in the glovebox

maybe you can find a lockable cover to go over the access hole? Im not sure if the ones that come on the regular rams ( not ram classic ) lock or not.
Which side up, when you're cranking it back up? I saw the the tire at the end of the video, so now I know. Thanks.
You're Welcome!
good video I'm changing my wheel at -25 ° C in Canada
How would you get it down if you don't have the tools it came with the truck.
not sure

Right!?

Hmm I have aftermarket wheels and tires, both weigh a few lbs more. Any idea how much that spare tire winch will hold on a 21 Ram 1500 Bighorn..
Not sure on actual the max. weight but it's a metal winch and chain so I wouldn't worry about a couple extra pounds - as long as the aftermarket wheel still fits up under the vehicle
I got my 2017 Ram used and it didn’t come with a spare . Do you know the size of the spare tire?
I believe the full size spares are 275/65 R17 but not 100% on that
Thanks man appreciated
You're Welcome!
Thanks for the video! I just had to get my spare tire. Easy. 1, 2, 3! I did it! 😅 lol you even helped find my jack.

The flat tire wont fit back on the reserve spot. The hole on the middle of your actual wheel is too small for the metal piece on the hoist end to fit through.
Thanks, I needed to remove a stubborn hitch from receiver and needed the spare out of the way.

It was a great video. I tried to put the extension with the hook in the hole, before I saw the video. What is the hook for? I have a 2020 Ram limited . Again great video, glad I found it.
Thanks! The hook piece is for the jack handle
Thks for showing, was wondering how that worked

Does this work for the 2016 1500?
yes
The “nut” on line does not match the square tool. It’s an odd looking shape. More like a torx bit than anything else.
Thanks for the effort, now I know. Cheers.
You're Welcome! Glad it helped
Also tailgate must be closed, if you have a camper or load where your tailgate is down , your screwed
Thanks sr I ben have my ram since 2012 😂 and I never see tha Thanks good video ❤
You're Welcome! Glad it helped
Just checked my 2015 , tools are missing
What's the piece with the hook for?
the handle for the jack
Thanks for posting this video. Very helpful.
You're welcome!
Thanks that just saved me from reading the owners manual!Trump 2024🇺🇸💪🤘
Glad it helped!
What is the piece with the curve that you didn't use for?
That’s part of the jack handle - the curved end hooks onto the loop that’s on the jack
Thanks sr 💪🏻
You're Welcome!
I’ve never lowered the spare on my 2016 1500 and I live in a snow/salt belt. I fear it may be too late 😢
yeah, rust is not kind to these mechanisms
Great information..thanks
You're Welcome!
Thanks, very helpful
You're Welcome!
Does this work on a 2008
I believe the location of the tools is a bit different but overall it should be similar
Thank you sir. I was using the wrong end hahaha
Glad it helped!
Thanks for sharing 👍🏽
Thanks for watching!
hi just wondering about that cable can it be removed ? If so I just don't want it rattling afterwards . I live in Canada nothing worse then having to change a tire in a snow bank in the winter . I want to put spare tire in the back of truck box.
I'm not sure what it takes to remove the cable but I think you may just be able to crank it up without the tire until its tight
