Interesting lecture. I remember fondly rehearsing and playing Gregson's D&A at the Albert Hall (1984) finals with my own band.

I remember this from when it was first broadcast!
Here we are in 2023 and Black Dyke are National Champions again, playing a fine test piece written by Edward Gregson in the 1980s rather than the 1880s.
It is wonderful to see brass bands still popular and performing at such an excellent contest and venue (the RAH). I was very happy to be playing there again this year, although in a different band to Dyke.

Hi very much enjoyed this program. Was it part of a series on Brass Bands or a series on Music? And were you the narrator/reader? Sadly Black Dyke came 6th in the National Finals in 1984.....

As far as I know this was just one of a series of programmes as part of the Open University courses and probably the only one that looked at brass bands. I'm not the narrator! That is Trevor Herbert. I was still at school when this was on TV and avidly listening to and watching as much as I could about bands as I'd just started playing in a band myself.
