    The modern winger is one of the most important defensive positions.
    Case in point, Ben Smith letting in almost every Australian try/line break in Perth.
    The most effective defensive tactic is the rush defence, which is led by the wingers/outside backs who look to rush up and in on the opposition.

      He's not, but he is a good player. Bottom line is that he creates less for his team and his strike rate is lower, also he doesn't come off his wing as much.

    • @callumscott953
      @callumscott953 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know its a controversial opinion but he quicker than Shane, has a better step than Shane and has at least equal vision. If you watched him last year at Toulouse you'd understand that saying "he creates less for his team" is crazy. He averages over 1.5 try assists per game, 32m per carry, 10 defenders beaten per game and a try ever 2nd game for Toulouse. I think by the end of his career, we'll be talking about Kolbe the same way we talk about Shane. Don't forget the standard of Rugby globally is far better than it was during Shanes career, its far harder to find spaces, defenses are better organized, and players are better tacklers. Look what happened to Habana during the end of his career, he pretty much because useless because even in such a short period of time, defenses improved a lot to counter those types of players. I'm not saying you're wrong, its just my opinion

    Wasps have taken the 'have as many Fly Halfs on the field as possible' ethos to a new extreme recently by having 3. Jacob Umaga at 10, Jimmy Goppeth at 12 and Lima Sopoaga at 15. Seems to be working, won our last 3 games before lockdown.

    This is great but I think the Shaq example is a little unfair- he had a 10 year stretch where his lowest average season PPG was 26.2, and it took until his 15th season before he ever dropped below 20, while also being effective on defense and rebounding.

    Robinson and Williams... little guys. Missing from modern union... although not as durable as big lumps particularly useful in a late strike capacity around the 60 minutes mark, they can drill space through forwards and outpace tired backs. Just try and keep them out of frontline defence work to keep them fresh, especially for a cross field chase.

    Lomu ran 100m in close to 10 seconds. 120kg man that can do that? Really dangerous. He wasn't just a powerful and strongman, but a paceman as well.
    When I think of fullbacks, I immediately think of André Joubert, Christian Cullen, Matthew Burke, and Percy Montgomery. Not many fullbacks these days that are thát consistent, brilliant or reliable.
    I feel Francois Steyn could have been a truly legendary fullback. But unfortunately many coaches and the "higher-ups" in South Africa didn't/don't know how to manage him.
