Hey great vid mate. Just thought you missed a point about the front-on, high up tackle. The mano-y-mano one that forwards and midfielders do? It's also called the "ball-and-all" tackle and it's primary function, at least in my opinion, is to prevent the offload. It definitely has the intimidation factor, and certainly is important to stop momentum particularly around the ruck, but hitting a guy high, wrapping his arms up, and preventing him getting the ball away is extremely valuable, particularly when the opposition has an athletic or dynamic ball-carrier in the pack who can free up someone with a nifty flick out the back. It also is one of the best ways to initiate a rip or a maul and so can be a invaluable tool for getting turnovers.

The best bit of advice I ever got in my entire time playing rugby was “when tackling, look. Doesn’t matter if you’re going low or high, look”. Turned me from a kid who couldn’t tackle for shit to a defensive maestro that had a reputation at high school for being a brick wall. It seemed really simple at the time but looking back now it was the key to getting my head on the right side as well as being able to read evasion by focusing in on the hip movements.

Thank you for this video. I believe proper tackling technique is something sadly overlooked by coaches at a school boy level in South Africa. Maybe this is only based on my experiences but it's still an issue that needs to be addressed.

Nobody ever seems to talk about the small things like tackle technique or types of tackle so thanks a lot for that

I've always been taught to shoot up on the front-on tackles. Shoot up, go low. It negates the effect of momentum you discussed at 7:12. It works for me at 200lb and for my smaller backline mates weighing as low as 140lb. "BUT MCJAGGER WHAT ABOUT THE HOLES YOU CREATE!"Well one of the biggest components of an effective press or "blitz" defense is having faith in the effectiveness of your back 3. It is difficult to get your team to buy-in entirely but, even as much as you wish it to be, you are 1 of 15 and with no unit behind you you have no chance at all. So, if the ball carriers body language is telling you that they are going to truck it through then meet them, don't wait. If you're trapped on the outside with a 110 kg Tongan wing running at you and your caught in a horse stance, then you have no choice but to shoot up and meet them. They'll probably splatter your brains all over the pitch if you wait on them. YOUR TEAMMATES, COACH, AND FANS WILL APPRECIATE THE EFFORT AND, more importantly, HEART WHETHER YOU MAKE THE TACKLE OR NOT. JUST TRY. Sitting back on your heels waiting to get ran over (hoping to catch and trip them) is not effort. All it takes is a little technique and lot of heart. GREAT VID NGJ.

I am not a player since school, although I was the best ha ha, I need your channel to explain all and break it down for me. Those on tv have nothing on you. I love rugby and unbelievably you make it even better, as for the first time it's all being explained to me. No really please do a match by match break down on highlights. I would psy for it. Thank you.

It’s quite hard to make a dominant tackle when going low front on. I’m more likely to get bumped as my shoulders are at or lower than my hips. Where’s when going high and hitting the sternum, I can plant my feet into the ground, stop them from offloading, and drive them back. For me at least, mid-high tackling is best. That being said, I love a good grass cutter or a dump

Wondering your thoughts on a new rule brought into my league. Cause now when we tackle we have to go below the nipple line. Which I personally find very irritating.

      @YTho-ev1ej 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Everyone tries to do it in amateur rugby and it rarely works. They usually do it when you could have just wrapped the ankles anyway. When it is pulled off though, it looks like some kind of magic trick hahah

Every 15 should learn the front on chop. No need for a gain tackle once the opposition has broken the line, but it has the highest success rate of any tackling style, especially when a gigantic 8 man is running at you.

I play in France and this season the french federation has us tackling below the waist. I totally agree with you I think this is stupid. Oh and also, no more tackles made by 2 players, so it’s going to be offload paradise and tackle will be useless. I hope they’re going to revert back to the classic rule next season

i have to do that in my club and this is terrible. We should rename rugby with a different name now....
I play wing and high tackle are vital at some times to prevent your opponent to score. But with those stupid rules...

Did a front tackle on the other team's biggest player twice in a game, both time it hurt but it felt so good to bring him down.
How it happened (If anyone cares): First time was off a penalty, he ran a bit to my right because of space, I did a small step to my right and planted my feet. Hit him straight in his thig and he fell over me. The second time was a similar situation, they won the ruck and he ran straight at me (probably wanting revenge), me realizing this I stood my ground waiting for him. I leaned into the tackle and bought him down again. After the game, he came up to me and said "fair play man", I may not score tries, make flashy runs or make big tackles often but I'll take the small one time moments for what they are.

I had just made a tackle and the guy off-loaded to another runner, who came back towards me. I was already on my knees so I went for his thighs but he cut at the last second and my head ended up in front of his knee... Which hit my face right where the mandible attaches to the rest of the face. It snapped that bone in half (he was a 215 lb center after all) and the bone came through my gum line, spewing blood everywhere. Luckily, our pitch was across the street from the hospital, so the boys helped me across the street and got me the help I needed.
Defensive technique is the most important safety issue I can think of in rugby and even for me, who prided himself on excellent form tackling, can have one moment of poor judgement that can have grave consequences. I continued to play for several years after that incident, but as my mother (who is a nurse) told me, a few inches above the mandible is the temple. If I had been hit with a knee there with the same force, I may not be able to even form speech or sentences anymore.
Rugby is such a beautiful game, but it deserves respect and attention to detail in all phases of the game.

Hey NGJ I'm 17 and have been playing rugby for three years and I'm moving to a new school so i think i have a chance to change my position. I've been playing wide head prop for all three years solely because i was the strongest on the team and had to fill in, now in this new team i am not the strongest and there are already two props. I'm 6'3 and 170lb have decent pace and better ball handling, id also say I'm strong but i prefer to avoid contact. any suggestions on what new position i should learn.

  • @YorkshireRhinos

best defence is still the rugby league "sliding defence" no matter where they may go with the ball, all you are doing is adjusting and hoping your inside man is sliding with you... you should already be flat in defence so essentially you're up a yard or two and slide left or right and let the man with the ball come to you

Bravo to mention over and over, "safety". Human brain is not "completed" until age 26.....meaning fully rational/ethical....."the ability to do the right thing when it is the hardest choice to make". The instruction to "win the collision" is a menace. It, like so much else that I've criticized in other responses to your posts, is the result of Law changes or interpretations. If a tackled player was required to release the ball "immediately" and/or mauling was still a serious part of tactics, then the need to "win the collision" would be, short of bullying over for a try, a silly choice as defenders would need let the runners charge into assumed contact go by and just grab on jersey as they go by, wait for help (fastest and fittest team arrive first) and if gone to ground ball is freed up "immediately"....not the advantage of bashing the defense as the Laws allow for little chance of turn over once tackled. Additionally, the instruction of how to tackle that I've seen on videos, tends to teach folks in head on situations to bend at the waist.....ie shoulder line is parallel to the ground and collision impact will run down their spine. NOT GOOD.....one can only get as low as their leg length. I would think it would make better sense to tackle with head up, spine straight, and bend in the knees.....and let the legs impact power in straightening or be under one to move laterally if the ball carrier was to feint a collision and then move off. In any case, big muscles of chest, back and thighs take the impact NOT THE spinal column. But this is a "by the way"....the initial problem is the Law changes that create "defense" that must be bashed through as there's no space created by loose play requiring commitment of players on defense to stop the ruck or maul from rolling on down the pitch. I'm no genius, but this bit should have been obvious to whomever are the "guvernors" years ago and the fact that it evidently was not tells me there's a cynicism/hypocrisy loose.....brutality/collision PAYS. We can wring our hands about collision, but CTE is only determined in an autopsy, so in the meantime we can sell the game to the lowest common denominator as was professional hockey for a number of years ( paid to fight)....Note: Willy John McBride or Colin Mead would have to compete as centers and Garreth Edwards and Phil Bennet wouldn't even be given a trial in the "modern" (since 2000) game. Is that an advance of the "sport"? I don't believe so. Thank you for your essays. Pip pip...
