Yes you can do that. Same concept. The mockup should be in that approximate size

The image data is perfectly preserved within the smart object and is not destroyed as you make changes. This non-destructive style of editing allows you to make changes like resizing, distorting, skewing, and more without affecting the image quality.

when I double click the smart object, it appears as a distorted form. how do I fix that?
Try again. Maybe u did distort a lot the rectangle.

Used the pen tool instead o draw aound item on a mouse matt, bu can seem to fill it in
U have to make selection from the pen tool. I have a tutorial about the pen tool in my channel

What you show is a simple straight edge, but what if you need to draw around somthing so the images in under and object, like a mouse matt, and the mouse is on the matt. you need the image to be under it

Figured it, Draw the outline of the objects save as a path. Do the rectangle as you show, save as the smart object, then use the path to mask the shape in that rectangle @@WeJustClickme
Why i dont have the option of distort ?
Eveyone has distort option. Check on which layer u are clicking
better to use perspective warp with the 2023 version of illustrator

I created it. Right click on the layer and choose convert to smart object

Why we are convert into a smart object?
To be able to edit it or change the image later on if we want without tedoing the whole work
