Thank you for this video. My uncle served with the Royal Artillery in the battle, in an anti-tank unit. Sadly, he was killed in battle on 16th. October 1944. In 2008 my brother and I visited my uncle's grave in the Overloon War Cemetery. We also visited the museum, which was indeed, very interesting.

You did a fantastic job on this battle. I was stationed in West Germany during the 1970s and visited Holland. I wish I had known about the War Museum in Overloon. I have never been in a war and am thankful for that. God bless all who died on both sides in the horrible war. They all had families. War is cruel and terrible. It is good that we are all in NATO to deter war. LTC Rick K.

I was stationed at vliegbasis volkel in the late 1960's, U.S. Air Force. I was amazed at all the equipment on display. I was told that after the war, the land owner gathered the equipment & started the museum. The Dutch people loved the American & British soldiers who liberated them. The older residents still remembered the "Hershey" chocolate bars given to them by the troops!

In the sixties almost everything was displayed in the open. Several items corroded. I was there as a child with my parents. Later with my own children and the last time I was there was a couple of years ago when I was on campingsite in that neighbourhood.
Then everything was restored and put inside of a large building. As you see in the magnificent film above. Very well done for somebody of his age. Nowadays there are also vehicles displayed from post WW2 such as the LARC the very big amfibious vehicle in the beginning of the Overloon museum tour he showed. This vehicle is from 1952. But anyway a very good show !

Thank you for your film. My grandfather was at the Battle of Overloorn and fought at Venray with the 1st battalion Suffolk regiment. He never spoke about the war and i had no idea of the battles he fought in. My uncle told me a few years ago. I have lived in the Netherlands for the past eighteen years and visited Overloorn museum three years ago. I am really grateful for the museum, the people working and volunteering there to give us a full account of the battles from the perspective of the soldiers but also the civilians. I first came to the museum as a kid and in those days there were almost no pavilions as you say. Just some woods and paths leading from one vehicle to the next. For children it felt like an adventure, you could really explore the area. I must admit I prefer it that way but I'm glad they finally were able to take them inside and restore them properly.

In those days, each of the vehicles in the museum were outside, on the exact spot where they had been shot down. In the early 2000's however, they were joined with the Marshall Museum and gained a lot of allied vehicles. Also it was evident that the vehicles that were in the woods would not be there much longer if left to the elements so the decision was made to build the big hall where everything is now.

Great video! But stories like this always cause me to think why. Why in hell was this battle even fought? A dinky little town that could be passed over, and just bombed to pieces. Even if the Germans came at the flanks of the allies after being passed, they would have to dislodge themselves and get into the open, in which they could be obliterated. I just can not understand the thought process of commanders in the day.

Thank you for showing us the museum. The German resistance shows how impossible Market Garden was, and could only have succeeded if the Germans had not resisted. Montgomery gambled that the Germans would rather surrender than fight on, but he was wrong.

Once the battle started, where was Monty? There was no overall commander. Browning and Horrocks had no one to coordinate their maneuvers efforts. When Monty failed to capture Arnhem, he used the US 101AB as static troops to hold the Lower Rhein which was a complete waste of manpower and depleted their health by forcing them to sit in cold waterlogged trenches for over a month. Donald Burgett's book on Market Garden details this.

      @colinmartin2921 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@fazole In Monty's memoirs he laments the fact that Allied Transport Command refused to drop Ist Airborne on the bridge, giving them far too much to do in fighting their way to the bridge, and he regretted not ORDERING Transport Command to drop them over the bridge, but he believed that the Transport and Airborne units knew their job. This I think, explain a much of what went wrong with Market Garden, but I still believe that it was not possible to drive a whole Corps up a single road without the Germans continually attacking the flanks, and so the whole operation depended on a lack of German resistance.

Market Garden was actually the fastest allied advance against German opposition in the entire September 1944 to February 1945 period. Check out the disasters in the Hurtgen Forest and Lorraine campaigns, which were far bigger failures.
It was the caution of the air commanders that was the biggest mistake made in Market Garden. Brereton and Williams of the USAAF refused double missions on day one and Hollinghurst of the RAF refused to fly closer to Arnhem.
Montgomery had zero jurisdiction over any of the air forces. Even the First Allied Airborne Army came directly under SHAEF.
Eisenhower, who was both Supreme Commander and, from September 1st, the C-in-C of all allied ground forces, had full jurisdiction over all of these forces but he did not not involve himself. So it was Eisenhower who could have changed things but did not do so. Not Montgomery.

Fights to flush out SS snipers in Brussels at the end of September with the White Brigade in 1944 and his love for the Dutch and Belgian people who were so kind to him and his unit particularly in Den Bosch and Apeldoorn .

Stop what you're doing for a moment and listen. Is there an orchestra playing outside? Or in your kitchen? Or in your office? No ? What ?? I can't believe it - NO BACKGROUND MUSIC TO YOUR LIFE ? Then obviously your life is really dysfunctional, sub-standard, dull, boring, not quite real .....

Can it be that my life is not real - not flowing properly - not quite so enjoyable ? What a lunatic thought. But some lunatics think it. These are the people who play music from ghetto blasters in the park, in their garden, from their car, in their shop, in the background of their videos.
Fools all over the world have jumped onto the bandwagon of stuffing music into everything - NOT because it makes everything better, but just because other people do it. It's called fashion - and fashion has sweet FA to do with merit or reason or even purpose. Watch a David Attenborough documentary - never one solitary single noise that isn't naturally occuring. Yet his documentaries are rivetting, from start to finish. Any video that's first class, will not need background music to try to cover up the fact that it's not first class.
