    My uncle is old money, about 60 (8th Generation land owner (Lordship titles), farmers and Horse Breeder in the North of England) its mostly expensive items he buys into, but ancient, for example Savile Row tailoring (Gieves & Hawkes, Hunstman, Anthony Sinclair) From at least 40 years ago, Rolex and Cartier watches from at least 50 years ago, Pocket watch from at least 100 years ago (That he still uses), 30 year old Land Rover and Jag. Barbour jackets that have had 6 re-waxes, Burberry raincoat he has had since the 80's, Crocket&Jones Boots, John Lobb Oxfords on at least their 3rd re-solling. I don't think he has bought anything expensive in the last 15 years, just repair and restore work.

I was close to an upper class gentleman and he only wore the types of brands mentioned and hardly ever bought new stuff unless absolutely necessary! Nouveau riche and old money have very different aesthetic tastes.

    Some on this list are accurate, while some are nonsense. Sadly, very few were pronounced correctly by the robot. On a bright note, thank goodness that brands like LV, Gucci, etc., were left off! Brooks Brothers were great for a long time, but not now, sadly. To feature their clothes as one of the top-10, on the same list as Brioni made me chuckle.

      LV for some reason gets completely ignored.

    Brooks Brothers has really cheapened its quality in the last decade and eliminated most of its classic styles. I don’t bother to shop there anymore. If I wanted polyester and acrylic clothes, I’d want to pay a lot less for them than their inflated prices, any fast-fashion brand will do. To me, fabric/material and timeless, classic style are the main considerations for buying wardrobe items. I don’t buy synthetic fabrics or plastic accessories/shoes. I’m not in the Old Money bracket, but buying cheap and very trendy items is a false economy, they cost more in the long run, both to the buyer and the environment.

    • @TheGreekGodOfWallStreet
      @TheGreekGodOfWallStreet ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They either do not know old money families, or have no right to reveal their names / names of many old money families mean nothing to normal people because they are not leaked to the media. Elementary, dear Watson.

    • @GaelinW
      @GaelinW ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Prague4Introverts - "Right to reveal their names"? If a member of an old money family is photographed wearing or using one of these brands and it is published in the media - a society magazine or article for example - it's public information and anyone can mention it. Old money family members have no more right to privacy than the people that were named.
      Old money families are constantly mentioned in publications, especially locally due to their attendance at and sponsorship of events. All one has to do is know where to look. Or do a Google search. Some names are very well known as some are literally centuries old. Rothschild, Carnegie, Vanderbilt. Grimaldi. Getty. Hearst. Astor. Churchhill. Kennedy. Windsor. Many of them even have members who work in the entertainment, media, arts or fashion industries and are happy to be mentioned in the media.
      So, yes, it is indeed, elementary, Watson.

    I feel redeemed. I have a superb pair of black leather riding boots, bought second hand, (in great shape), that i've reheeled 3 times, and partially resoled once, already. Super comfortable, and great looking. Top grade leather.
    I was extremely lucky to find a partially retired, old school repair guy, mortgage long since paid. Little new footwear, if any, sold here, is actually worth repairing. I have a suspicion that i am a favorite customer. We always have great chats, on what was...
    Over 10 yrs, to ME, these boots still spell class. Though, currently living in a small "city", i've often gotten ragged on, for them, and my wardrobe... which is frankly, far more fashionable than the locals...who think the local mall is IT.
    To me, fabulous quality, great cut and design, speaks for itself. It has no need to scream. A logo runs a poor third. If someone doesn't speak that language, their opinion on this subject, is unimportant.
    Very expensive things, EVEN SECOND HAND, with proper care, SHOULD last, a very long time. If they don't, you've been had.
    I don't ride to hounds. And when my boots start showing wear, in spite of renewals, i will undoubtably somewhat alter their appearance in my wardrobe, to a lesser, more casual status.
    But even worn, they will ALWAYS reek of status...and days of hard riding...even though i don't ride at all...

    *OLD MONEY **_DONT_** WEAR BRANDS* they have their clothes made bespoke - I know I am a bespoke tailor of historical menswear.
    *My advice to you* - buy secondhand [if its good enough to sell uses its quality], have it altered to fit you by a seamstress, have it patched and repaired until it drops to pieces, save your money DO NOT buy fast fashion or expensive things with labels and then start having your clothes made for you buy a tailor, it is NOT as expensive as you think and they will last you decades. My suit jackets will last 50 years.
    I leave 4" of extra leg on the trousers in case your son has longer legs than you - NO JOKE.

    The 'authentic' lines of generations and 'old money' families I completely understand the brands they have become accustomed to and trust.
    But for those who invest in them who are none of the former, but only hope to 'project' that same image (that has taken generations of accustomed style and lineage identity etc,....would that not be frowned upon, and perhaps be described has an imposter, none authentic and completely giving the brand a bad image.
    Picture the established 'Rolls Royce' brand for example, with a full gold wrap and and 20 inch black alloy wheels (yep!, that has and is happening) just an example of once a great brand that has fallen victim to those 'projectors' and what was established and great has become accessible and just a 'new money' pimp ride.
