  • This video shows union pacific Big Boy operating in the snow from Denver Colorado to Cheyenne Wyoming. This route is truly spectacular for chasing trains because of the track's closeness to the road and the natural beauty along the route.

this locomotive needs to be running permanently. it's a national treasure and should be considered a national priority to keep this running down the rails. nothing else like it exists on the face of the earth.

The 4014 should be running all the time. It is the pride of the nation it really truly brought back steam locomotive history back to life. I want say that that Ed Dickens and the whole up crew really did a good job on the up 4014. They really did that’s for sure I am really proud of them for what they accomplished. 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

America at its finest. 100% American made by Americans watch and see what we did every day. I can never watch a steam locomotive without tearing up. This BigBoy is really something. Yhanks Union Pacific for putting her back on the rails.

Yea, but it all began with British technology, here in my home town of Stourbridge, UK. We sent your first ever locomotive to you in 1828. It was called The Stourbridge Lion. However, incredible advances were made, which resulted in this beauty, 116 years later.

I've paced 844 on this same stretch at 70 mph. At that speed the drivers are right on the edge of being a blur to the naked eye. You can't quite focus on them.
Amazing to see the Big Boy out in the snow. Most of the steamers are put up for the winter and are seldom out in these conditions. Unusual and great camera work. Congratulations. You have brought a considerable amount of pleasure to over 60k people. That is no small achievement and is something to be proud of.

Big boy UP 4014 put on an excellent performance while operating through a snow filled atmosphere, I always enjoy seeing steam locomotives operating in snowy weather. I am glad that the 4014 was restored back to operation as I would have never expected to witness the restoration of a UP "big boy" class locomotive during my lifetime and these scenes are fantastic to observe.

The great iron horse charging for the barn. I know they will probably never see it but I want to thank UP and especially head engineer and supervisor of steam Ed Dickens Jr. for the the long process of restoring our Big Boy and the great thrill this year. May she and 844 still be steaming for the next golden spike centennial. I'm sure the crew is worn out and I wish them a good rest and happy holidays. Just come to the NW next Summer. Don't forget were on the UP mainline too.

Wonderful to see the Big Boy 4014 returning to its home base in snowy conditions after six months of amazing trips through the US. I have followed everything since Pomona watching a plethora of great TH-cam videos. One of the absolute highlights for me was watching the 4014 double heading with the 844 through Echo Canyon of the Wasatch Mountains on a wet weather day. Looking forward to seeing many more great videos in the future. I can only imagine how magnificent it would look if both locomotives teamed up again for trips through Idaho and north along the Columbia River to Portland and Seattle etc. Bring it on please UP. BTW absolute hats off to Ed Dickens for his amazing efforts to bring this epic adventure to its fruition for the benefit of thousands of people. He is a perfect spokesman for UP. And of course to his great crew. Well done to all of you. Appreciations coming from me the TH-cam Train Lord in South Australia. Thanks again. WOW!

@Bjorn Berkowitz Me too!!! Every time I see a Diesel behind a steam engine, I feel like it's being chaperoned, and isn't being allowed to do the job it's born to do. That said, the only time I've seen an unchaperoned Steam engine, it was UP's Challenger, and it was only pulling freight. No passenger cars. Someone said something recently about "steam heat explosion" or rupture, or something, and it's got me thinking that the Diesel is there to provide electric power for the passenger cars because they don't trust the Steamer to be able to provide heat/power safely. Honestly, if anyone could provide proper maintenance on the steam systems, it'd be UP, but I can still see where they're coming from...

Nothing is more fun (at least in trains) than being a passenger during a blizzard. I was on one years ago on the train from New London, Connecticut to Washington, DC (back when it used to snow around the DC area). The train was packed with people who didn't want to make the drive and college students back after Christmas break. The train just kept going, plowed through the snow and made it DC, almost on time. The only thing it ran out of was beer.

I wonder how much the diesel engine contributed to pulling the train or was it just in idle and the 4014 actually did all the hauling? This is amazing video footage of 4014, thank you for your effort and the time
you put into compiling and getting these great shots and scenes and angles, at speed and stopped.

4014 needed no help pulling that small train. It could handle 10x that car load in its prime.
The diesel is there in case something goes wrong with 4014 and to meet modern braking requirements. That's pretty much it.

I stood out in 10 deg weather for 40 minutes before discovering that they moved its schedule up a day because of the storm.

Fortunately, the rare "Bomb Cyclone" hit colorado the day Big Boy left, so I had no school.
Unfortunately, I was unable to see it because I live on the far southeast side of Aurora, and conditions were terrible that day.

The best thing ever happened Lance Fritz owner of union pacific ever did is get 4014 restored and had 3985 and 844 running so the public could see american history come alive. Thousands of people were not born when them steam engines running across america many decades ago, I‘ve said it many times before 4018 sitting in texas should be restored also. And keep the public tour going in 2021.
