With all 4014 is hauling it was nothing especially while it was making its way all the way to Council Bluffs to pick up the coaches and then depart for Omaha since the cars were only there for breaking power
You know you can’t really hear the hard work puffing sound of 4014 until she gets close enough like 3985 did with that container train several years ago
@@sithlordofoz perhaps but you just can’t hear it well enough until she gets closer. And we could hear 3985 puffing and chuffing real hard so she was pulling A whole container consist train solo
I'd like to see any AT&SF 50xx series 2-10-4 haul a heavy drag up that hill, in competition with UP4014. Lets see if Big Boy's long steam pipes sap his power. I just watched a vid claiming SF5000 has a similar tractive effort, but at a better specific impulse; i.e. higher efficiency and with more weight on its drivers.
Believe it or not, most don’t, the diesel doesn’t do any work. 4015 runs on a high idle to make minimal power for the few pieces of equipment it needs to run. It is there only for PTC, GPS and dynamic breaking.
Basically the diesel locomotive helps Big Boy to coast and maintain speed while cruising, like a cruise control, so the mechanical parts of Big Boy won't be solicited too much and helps with braking power if needed, beside providing electric power to the entire train. In the end Big Boy is doing the 90-97% of the job
Considering when 4014 came out of restoration and was on its first test the diesel had its dynamic brakes on full and 4014, according to the diesel engineer dragged it like it was in neutral my bet is on the 4014 doing all the work
Every time I see a steam locomotive video, there is a diesel cut into the consist. Is that there for insurance, or is the diesel actually online and working? Are the steamsers so unreliable that the diesel is a necessity? They didn't use to be....
the diesel is used as a power generator for the coaches and to help with breaks. 4014 is reliable enough to pull the train on its own so the diesel is there as a backup.
Wow soo cool of UP to actually use this example of engineering art for its intended purpose hate when things that were ment to work are restored and then put in a glass box
A huge steam locomotive AND a caboose!?!? Love it!
4014's on the same hill as his little brother 3985
That area looks familiar. Is that the same place where they did the video (a few years ago) of 3985 pulling the transmodal freight cars?
It is that place! Also, the video of 3985 was filmed in the 90s.
@@rz12331 thanks. I didn’t realize the video was that long ago.
This is a very famous spot.

Sadly that video was removed due to copyright issues...😔
I doubt 4014 even knew it had anything behind it

Needs more weight behind it, it'll sound better.

Not working hard - not much load and the diesel takes most of it anyway.

@@sithlordofoz you were right that it wasn't working hard, however, it was doing all the work. the diesel is just for dynamic braking.

Little wonder that photographers love S-curve compositions.

could you link that video?
We will never know how much the diesel is contributing to the pull but as the caboose passes I hear the diesel is revved and working.

The D helps extend the range of the steamer.

The Big Boy series NEVER ENDS
Wait, is it doing a revenue run? Is that freight it's hauling or ROW maintenance material???
Excellent

3985 did something simular to this in this spot in the 90s and 2001
that video of it was what inspired me to go here.
Not even breaking a sweat.
Looks like a model train to me
...Not saying it is but there are some impressive replicas that look like the real trains

She should really be hauling a Double Stack that's 5 1/2 miles long unassisted like her legend proclaims.
4014 probably could pull better if that stupid nanny diesel was out of picture 🤬
