    Thanks for this quick tutorial. I was looking for a text-based tutorial. But this works even better. In the current year (2020) the window is called slightly different. "Volume" is now "Loudness". The rest of the tutorial applies as explained in your video. Thanks again!

    Hi Mike - Great tutorial, I found this very useful! Adobe also employ the Loudness Radar Meter which can be a great tool for monitoring loudness when mixing. My question is when clicking the limiting box in match volume does this limit to maximum True-Peak? (-1 dBTP for EBU R128).

    Can I get a quick opinion, Mike?
    Do you think the "podcasting standard" is something that the majority of online audio (i.e. TH-cam videos) should adhere to, or just podcasts?

      Yes, it's a good idea. If you're producing audio for internet or mobile then having a standard can only be a good thing.

    Hey Mike, for me it's a blank page. It makes no sense in audition to optimize the single files e. g. to -16 dB and then I add effects to clips or tracks and export my full podcast episode. It makes no sense. After adding compression, hard limiter etc. it's not -16 dB anymore and probably not suitable for youtube anymore. So is my workflow really: match loudness of all files, add effects, export the whole session, import wav or mp3 and adjust loudness again. Makes no sense, doesn't it? Is there an effect which is correcting a track or a clip for LUFS standards? Thank you and please tell me if I missed something:)

      Try in multitrack view the "Match Clip Loudness" function for this.

      @@MikeRussell thank you Mike, but thats not what I mean. It makes no sense to optimize all clips, put compressors etc. on top of all, export and then expect the loudness to be fit. But try to hard to find a solution for me, I think there is none except for exporting and then matching clip loudness on the export as a final step. I checked up on so many TH-cam Videos for another solution. :) Have a great day, Malte

    Hello Mike, thanks for taking the time to make the tutorials.
    Question, this step of leveling the loudness should be always done before starting to mix anything right? wether if its for tv, movie, radio... since this "match clip volume" changes the volume (db) of the clip... it would change the whole mix right?

      +Leon Klein I am wondering this myself. If you match volume before mixing and then run match volume after, I see that compression, EQ, etc. has reduced the volume again back to somewhere between -18 and -20 LUFS. So, I'm not sure if I should run it again afterwards or if I should just be using it after the mix is complete.

      I would generally say that matching the loudness should be at the end of the chain, in much the same way maximizing is at the end of the end in music production. As you say, it would change the LUFS level if you start messing around with the audio again afterwards.

    Just analysed the podcast edition of my dance music radio show, and it's at -11 LUFS. But then again I use the multiband compressor, and limit the audio to -0.3db to ensure no audio peaks out. Very interesting to know Mike, but for consistency, and syndication of the radio show, I'll stick to my current method. Very interesting though, thanks.

      I haven't watched the video yet, but I will. I just wanted to say that some of my voice work is required to be at -3 before the company will even accept it. I do my podcast that way and have zero complaints on audio quality. I DO use Audition and have a recording degree so there's that too. Can't wait to watch and hear your take on it.

    Another great video. Thanks.
    I have a question.
    What you seem to have demonstrated is equalizing the volume of five individual podcasts so they end up at 16 LUFS.
    But what about equalizing the volume of different sections *within one podcast* so that all the people being interviewed (as is my case) are all at roughly the same volume.
    I currently use the desk top version of Auphonics for this.
    Are you saying that I could use Audition CC (which I use for recording and editing) to do this instead of Auphonics?

    I have a short question. Is it possible to change the microphones sensitivity in Audition?. What I mean is while recording the (as example) clicks of my mouse dont get recorded too ?

It sounds like the very end as you refer to uploading afterwards. If so, presumably this is different to adding compression to bring the levels up to the same point? Or does 'match volume' replace that? Thank you.

      Match loudness should be done after all mixing and mastering to ensure the edited podcast hits the loudness standards

    Hi, Mike, perhaps you can help:
    I'm still using Audition's predecessor - CoolEditPro - as it's been meeting my needs for 15 years but I'm not exactly sure how to get to -16 LUFS with it.
    Would 'Normalizing' the final podcast to -16.01dB be effectively the same or no?

      Apply your EQ and compression first, then normalize the track to achieve the desired loudness.

    Mike, what's the difference between using the match volume settings and the normalize to .1 dB process? They seem to have a similar effect.

      Hi Marian, normalise will found the loudest part of your audio and either boost or trim the entire audio by the difference between the loudest peak and the target level to which you are normalising. The match loudness is different in that the LUFS scale (Loudness Units relative to Full Scale) is a perceived loudness level and calculates how loud something will be perceived by the average human hearing.

    "Match Volume Settings" does not work when there's only one file, which makes sense. So how do you adjust the LUFS for just one file?

      Normalisation takes the highest point of the audio and increases or decreases all the audio by the difference needed to make the loudest part the target level. It has no effect on the dynamic range.
      Limiter just limits the audio at the level you set. A limiter can also have an input boost which when set incorrectly turns a limiter into a compressor.
      LUFS is a method of measuring loudness, it stands for Loudness Units against Full Scale

    You mention that the meaning of loudness is actually someones "perceived loudness". I notice in the drop down of the tool is several different loudness standards to choose from. One of those is labeled "perceived loudness (legacy)". Would this perhaps be better or does it even mean what it seems? Thanks a lot for your amazing tutorials!

      I always use the default setting which works well for most instances (including online audio). I'd only change if you know what you're doing and need it for a certain project.

    Ok, watched it. Great tutorial, but I have to say even with a recording degree (graduated in '99 mind you) that I have no idea what a LUF is. We were always taught DB and DbV. Is LUF a UK standard? Like I said before, my voice over work is required to be at -3Db and I use that same standard for my podcasts to great results. Glad you shared this tutorial though. I had no idea that feature was there. I usually compress and normalize.
    On another note, I'd love to hear what your work flow is for your podcasts. I've only been publishing now for a little over a month once a week. I'm always looking for ways to streamline my process.

      Hey Jason - LUFS describes loudness relative to full scale (Loudness Unit relative to Full Scale...) - it measures differences in perceived loudness. On paper, two pieces of audio might be the same RMS or Peak dB value but subjective perception can be different. K-weighting (a feature of LUFS) attempts to overcome this.     Hey Mike, sorry for the OT but i need your or someone else's help! Im about to spend 400€ into a new mic and i got 4 mics to choose. Your Audio Technica AT4033 ASM, a Shure SM 7B, a Beyerdynamic M99 and a Electro-Voice RE20. I want to "prodcast" with it and im not a trained prodcaster so it should be easy to use. My room does basicly look like yours (as what i saw in your videos). So overall i have no clue if a dynamic mic would be needed because it would cost a bit more to run it compared with a condenser.
    I hope someone can give me advices.

    Not sure you've done this in the right way. You're basically applying normalization on all the podcasts while not taking into account that you're not using a limiter. Practically you peaks might end up being squashed if forced to comply to this -16 lufs threshold and therefore generate distortion. Any lossy conversion will add intersample peaks.
    If you just type -16 lufs it will not make it magically compliant with the ITU/EBU standard, since your true peak value may very well go above the -1dbTP ceiling value.

      @@wj7495 We can use a compressor to first pull the transient peaks down so that we can normalize to the target loudness level (LUFS).

    I'm getting confused though with everything. Does it mean that the voices in my podcast should aim to hit -3 dB on the bottom volume meter?
    And then overall loudness in the files afterwards, should be -16 LUFS in the Match Loudness field

      You can work at any level while editing as long as you stay under 0db but the final podcast should be at -16LUFS

    I couldn't see after applying the -16 LUFS if the Podcast audio reduced the whole track based on the outlier peaks, or if it understood that the really loud outliers were intelligently excluded from the analysis. Unfortunately you didn't show the whole screen at the end!

    Hi Mike Russel, quick question. What are the loudness standards for an online radio station for today?
    The PRSS NEW Audio Loudness Standard has been set at -24 LUFS, ± 2 LU, audio peaks ≤ -3 dBFS for sample peaks or ≤ -2 dBTP for True Peaks, meaning producers should strive to set their programs’ audio levels at -24 Loudness Units Relative to Full Scale (LUFS), with a deviation range of plus or minus two Loudness Units and an audio peak at or below -3 dBFS or -2 dBTP. But that will be a problem with Alexa: Program loudness for Alexa should average -14 dB LUFS/LKFS. The true-peak value should not exceed -2 dBFS.
    Please advice?

      Radio traditionally has always maxed out the volume. The audio passes through a set of processors to ensure its compressed, hard limited and pumped to the Max.

      I got it, PRSS answered my question today. Radio LUFs in 2021 must be:
      Loudness Standard: ITU BS.1770-3
      Target Loudness: -24
      Tolerance: -2
      Max True Peak Level: -2 dbTP
      Look-Ahead Time: 12ms
      Release Time: 200 ms

      What's the best way to increase the max. audio peak?
      No matter I set it to -2 my average audio peak is -5/-6 which is the reason Alexa declines my skill :(

      This is impossible to answer as it may be that your stream host also adds processing.

    I analyzed my first episode in Audition and found it as at -15 LUFS. I decided to leave it there. It's close enough, and as a listener, I like my podcasts slightly loud anyway.

      That's the personal choice of the listener. By being out of spec, it's back on the listener having to adjust volume to compensate. Why make things harder for your listeners? Also, non-compliant content risks being rejected or re-encoded by services/platforms that enforce the standard, meaning you're giving up control of your final quality.

      Your podcast should be set to match the loudness standard LUFS (loudness units against full scale). Most podcasters go for the unofficial target of -16LUFS

      ENCN will come first so equalise, normalise, compress (only very lightly for a podcast) normalise and then when you've got the sound how you like it match the loudness to -16 LUFS.

    Thats done wrong...without using the limiter you will get distorted signal after the loudnes match.
