      Any man with a collection like this is a man who's never set foot on a battlefield. To him a mini? ball from Shiloh is just an artifact. But to a combat vet, it's a hunk of metal that caused some poor bastard a world of pain.

      Maybe a rather irrelevant question, but it has to do with the AP and HE markings. Could this be because of it being a paratrooper / highly deployable kit with a unit that would rely on re-supply from other units after deployment? As Germany is part of NATO it may be a way of having ease of communication across nationalities?

    Some friends of mine from the Fallshirmjäger love to tell me the story, when a few years ago two Wiesel 1 TOW stopped a french tank attack during an exercise. The Wiesel stayed behind a building and only one of them drove out of cover, "fired" it´s rocket and retreatet back into cover, so the next could fire. Thy wiped out some tanks before the referee "killed" one of the Wiesel, so the exercise wouldn´t be pointless.

      It's an ideal motorised infantry hunter. It sounds like a civilian car, has a profile smaller than most vans, can drive in places you'd think impossible, and brings an auto-cannon to eat APC's and IFV's for breakfast. A modernised one with computer assisted targetting and better optics is still an exceptionally viable vehicle. Frankly I would honestly say this is more viable on a modern battlefield than most MBT's if it wasn't for the fact that its armour can be defeated by most light vehicle mounted weaponry. It is the perfect definition of a glass cannon.

      As a former Forward observer, I agree. The gear on the Recon variant would be well suited for directing artillery or air. But due to the compact nature, it's probably not a vehicle I would have liked living out of in Afghanistan, or a traditional war in Europe for that matter. And I would have missed my 50.cal on our Danish M113. Self defense is key, especially when operating alone, or in a small unit.

    This was a cool video. For me, the Wiesel name caught my eye, back in the mid 1960's I rode a school bus from our small village out to a rural schoolhouse in North Dakota. One of the last stops was at a small farm a few miles from the school. The owner of the farm had a snow plane and a Wiesel tracked vehicle. Since the snow in the Dakota's can be treacherous from time to time, that farmer was a God Send to the local population when it became necessary to transport an injured person or pregnant lady to hospital, and his units often became the rescuer for those who were not wise enough to stay home when the snow began to blow across the prairie of the Dakota's. He saved dozens of lives with his units, in fact there is a memorial in place at a local museum for his rigs and the owner. I knew his children very well, sadly they have all passed on now, this does make me a bit sad, but I am an old man now and many of my closest friends and family have passed on.

    A Paratrooper Platoon is frightening. Hey let’s give them a 20mm Machine Cannon on a very fast vehicle. Place it on the Top, so that the Operators don’t have to present a lot of their quite vulnerable front and can quickly escape the backfire.
    A very good idea. At least for the Paratroopers.

    Hey Bernhard, good video, I think the quote has a typo on the ground pressure at 6:50, iirc pressure is defined as force per square meter, so it should be square cm. Keep it up with the good videos, cheers!

    One of the best things about about the Wiesel is that two of them can be transported on a medium lift helicopter. It doesn't have all that much armor, but it is quiet, so it can be stealthy. I wonder if they could improve the armor protection without increasing weight too much. Maybe with composite fiber protection.

    • @andrehashimoto8056
      @andrehashimoto8056 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends, KE based munitions can only be covered with MINIMUM weight with Steel armor, which still would add far too much weight... Then there's the fact that EVEN if they add extra Composite armor, the Wiesel is far to light in the structural area to handle anything above an AT grenade (40mm HEAT, but anything with enough explosives and hitting close enough will KO the vehicle)....
      The Paratrooper Mechanized firepower concept is basically to give them an IFV grade weapon on the lightest vehicle possible that can still accommodate armor for crew....
      More armor than enough for some HMG fire is likely to not be viable given specs

    • @tompalmer5986
      @tompalmer5986 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking maybe a thin sheet of composite armor might do the trick. We'd want to make sure it can repel 7.62 reliably, but I guess stealth and agility are this vehicle's best survival mechanisms.

    Looks somewhat susceptible to RPG rounds so it clearly needs the Fallschirmjager around it, or the machine cannon has to keep opponents far away.

      On the other hand, you can view it as requiring RPG rounds to kill; not bad for a vehicle smaller, lighter (if compared to the uparmored variants), and yet more heavily armed and armored than a Humvee.

      BMD is what this vehicle (Wiesel) wants to be, If the Wiesel can be airdropped (and still be used) from a C-130 then you are much closer to what BMD allows ( operational mobility out of an air deployed unit, something Big Green® lacks)
