Lydia I wish I had seen this last week. I was cleaning house and tossed a pile of National Geographics. Now I want them back. Because this looks amazing.
the magical ingredient is gold in their ink.. if you watched Gary Reef do this technique he talked about it it also doesn't matter what year, i have done them with new ones just fine.. in fact if you get old ones from the 50's 60's, they don't seem to work as well because the ink is so dried up.. the 70's work great though
Good idea using a foam brush rather than spraying it on (as many instructional videos show) as it's less messy and doesn't put the solvent into the air. And the garbage bag technique is brilliant; gives you more control (to a degree) as to the manipulation of images. Thanks :))
Really good video but I have a question ... when I attempted this and then used the papers for collage, the inks smeared when I applied a good quality gel medium for paper collage ... what a nasty mess ... what did I not do?
What ingredient is there in the Citra Solve that makes it dissolve the ink.. we don't have CS in the Netherlands... or does anybody know what dutch product would work ??
RUV! Now I must troll through the senior's stash of magazines for acceptable fodder. They won't miss 1, or 2, or 50 issues, right? :p Love the cicada serenade!

It's so fun!
I've worked on current NGs as well. They melt beautifully.
Thank you!!
Scan them and then you can use both sides
Thanks!
Wow amazing! Looks like I'm going to get my natgeo out of storage! TFS!💜😄👍
Thank you!!

I have successfully collaged them, so I'm not sure. The solvent may have not been quite dry yet?

Hi Ellie! Citra Solv is a citrus oil based product so any citrus based solvent would probably work!
GREAT video. You can also scan these and print on various fine art papers (a great workaround when you love both sides of the finished product).
Thank you!!
What year is this National Geographic from? I know they changed inks over the years
Gosh - that was so many years ago - I don't know.
The CitraSolv website says 2000 and newer.
Does the paper feel greasy when dry? Can you drip alcohol on them? Once dry, does painting on them reactivate the Citrisolv? Thanks
Hi Mae! It does not feel greasy - it has a matte finish! I haven't tried alcohol or paint.
A facial mask may be in order, as well as the gloves. It literally takes seconds to put on either.
Well it is 2020!
I believe prior to 1990
Can you use a micron pen on it? or pen and ink?
Absolutely!
ok--what year of magazines do you need? ones before what year to do this??
Thanks for watching!
Fun!

Great!

Great idea!!
