We travelled in early January following a stay in the town of Zermatt (next to the famous Matterhorn mountain) when the small station town is still covered in snow and decorated for Christmas. Note, this was part of a wider Interrail/Eurail journey outlined fully here: www.bangorni.c...
The Glacier Express railway train then follows from Zermatt (08:00AM start for us) through many small mountain stations, including Visp, before crossing the snowy mountains of the Alps.
Early attractions include the Oberalppass, which is the highest point of the journey, as well as the Rhine Gorge where the Rhine River passes in the Swiss Alps. Before reaching the next main station at Chur (pronounced Coor). And this is an optional end to the Glacier Express.
However, the best-known attraction is the Landwasser Viaduct, found along the train line between Chur and St Gallen, and it takes roughly 2 hours between these two stations of the railway line.
The Glacier Express takes 8 hours in total from Zermatt to St Moritz (Switzerland) on what is known as the 'World's Slowest Fast Train' where it is a high-speed train, only, given the terrain, it is the world's slowest when going from point A to point B.

My late wife and I traveled to Zurmatt on a 3-day Swissrail Pass back in the 1980s, almost forty years ago.
It looks the same. The train is obviously different but the rest is just as magical!

I taken that train before... yeah nice way to get relaxing noon and get some nice lunch..There are ski area in one of the station so you can go skiing for a bit...

We did the Jungfrau 3 day pass from Interlaken. Again it was seriously breathtaking scenery.

This video makes me miss living in Germany. Even though I’m still in the mountains in the US there’s just something special about Europe.
Not only is the scenery nice to look at, but all the homes and villages all look well cared for, in a country that considers aesthetics too. While a view from a U.S. train in most towns and cities is the ass back end and rundown disused parts. That showcase how much poverty and income inequality there really is in the U.S. The Swiss should be proud of their small country. I enjoy it every chance I get to visit my brother who has now lived in Switzerland 20+ years and has no plans of ever coming back to live in the U.S. His wife from Japan also has no interest in living in the U.S., she feels its an unsafe country. She feels safe and secure in Switzerland, like she does in her native Japan. I don't blame her, both my cars have been broken into and vandalized on more than one occasion, and I live in a decent part of town. I'm just grateful they haven't broken into my apartment *yet* but I'm waiting for the day I find everything missing.

I’ve lived in Switzerland 4 years and still haven’t caught the train... I definitely will now this was stunning
bec angela it should be included on Swiss passes as well. We did it on the Eurail pass.
I've also been in Switzerland just over 4 years and almost never get on the trains. I did take the old-fashioned open-air Rorschch-Heiden Bergbahn a couple of times and it was wonderful. It's close to where I live.

When I had my first travel to Zermatt it was so facinating. I will never forget that day...ever in my life....some more few places in Switzerland has remineded me like Apubel in TASCH, Groner Glaciers, Gugle...and many more....Switzerland is a place of icicles

I took this train in the summer with my family. The weather was nice for us who were from the tropical zone and the view was so beautiful. We stayed in a guesthouse where we enjoyed watching the Matterhorn all day long. She was so gorgeous.
Can’t beat views of the Matterhorn :) Definitely want to join it in the summer time.
