You may be out of luck. Most spray-on coatings contain ingredients that react with the plasticizers in polymer clay and can leave them tacky *forever*. That said, scrubbing off the coating using isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol might work. Good luck.
I have to say. I'm brand new to polymer clay. I had to buy an oven and a pasta machine I chose the ones you use. I ordered them can't wait till they get here. I made my first Cain today. I did a skinner blend from your tutorial. I am hooked already. I want to learn as much as possible. Thank you for taking the time to do these wonderful videos
I’m 34, Married with 2 boys and a beginner and I just bought A Air drying set of 26 colours x2 as I want to make a Butterfly / Fairy garden but needs to be waterproof - I’m wanting in in memory for my son and daughter I lost. This is the description that was with my Clay I bought - but I have bought some clay tools just to help me out and iv bought some strong hold glue as I want it to stick to terracotta pots The type of Brand Of Clay I bought is “ Magiclay - Candy Colours (has black and white in the Kit also) Magiclay is a colourful lightweight, soft and elastic type modelling compound it air dries within hours resembling a paper-like texture. Keep Magiclay in the tubs provided to keep it airtight, as once left out it will dry fast. It will bond wet to dry, so you require no adhesives. No tools are required to mould it in to shape, as it can be pulled, stretched, rolled, shaped, cut, stamped and pressed to suit a wide variety of art projects. As I’m a MP soaper, candle and tart maker as well as other natural products I have Mica powder colours and liquid soap colours and candle candle blocks
I really appreciate your videos. I have a quick question. I’ve been searching everywhere, and I cannot find the answer. i’m wanting to make soap dishes without any paint or gold-leaf out of just baked polymer clay, and I just need to make sure that they’re gonna be safe and waterproof without using a sealant. If not what sealant you would recommend. Thank you so much for what you do 😊
Thank you for the videos. so helpful. Here are my questions: do we have to seal polymer clay after painting them with acrylic paint? if we bake it after painting would the paint stay? What glue do you use to attach the sculptures from polymer clay to the mugs?
Hi, I have seen on many tutorials that you should never use oil based polyurethane varnish on polymer clay as the clay breaks down and gets sticky. They say to use water based polyurethane varnish which I have used both in satin and gloss finish and have never had any problems. Opinions??
Thank you for bringing all the sealants into one place and explaining them all at once. Videos can be confusing when you see them in different videos throughout youtube. Very helpful. I missed which clay you used to make the book cover. It is very large, did not not crack or would it not break or bend? Thank you.
I've always wondered what polymer clay is supposed to smell like after it's done baking and has cooled off? Is it OK if my pieces still smell like polymer clay?
How do you like the water-based polyurethane glazes? Do you prefer the Golden and Liquitex ones over them? What situations is the wax good for? Sorry for all the questions!
I have recently completed a fairy door /ring holder and used a lot of chalk pastels for shading and I am looking for a true matte finish. from what I am finding everything is coming up satin or gloss. any suggestions of a sealer that will remain truly matte?
I really truly do appreciate the tutorials and am grateful for the guidance. I would suggest that with a tad bit of planning and editing the length of these could be reduced by half. Thank youfor the guidance!!!
Hey! I want to make jewellery out of polymer clay. Also I am new to this. Can you please tell me wether I can bake polymer earrings in microwave oven having a limit of 30mins. Secondly I added gold leaf in my earrings which initially burnt, how to add gold leaf in it. It would be very helpful for me.
This is great info! Thank you so much! Which one will you recommend for some object that will be outdoors most of the time? I love the fairy door, so realistic!
Thank you for your tips :) Do you have any experience with polymer clay in mugs? I want to seal my work but I want it to be dishwasher safe. Do you have any tip? Thanks
Thanks so much for the wonderfully instructive videos. I am new to polymer clay and am learning so much! I picked some up so I could create buttons for my crochet and knitting. I am using PearlEx and wondered which of the products you mentioned in this video would make it waterproof so the PearlEx doesn't wash off. I believe you mentioned the clay itself doesn't need any sealing. I would instruct people to hand wash the items and not to soak them but I don't want the coating dissolving. Thanks in advance for your help and thanks again for all the tutorials.
Hello Cindy. Long time fan here. LOVE all your videos I know this may be an older video but I see that you dont have any of the sculpey glazes in this video. would you not recommend them over all the ones you have listed here? I just recently made one of the dragons egg from Game of Thrones and wanted a matte glaze over it to seal in the gliders paste I used but now I'm paranoid it feels sticky. and just wondered was there a better matte gloss I could have used?
If I had only researched this topic first, however, I did not. I used a clear acrylic gloss coating spray. My husband picked it out to spray a miniature fairy garden we made for the granddaughters. The fairies, greenery & mushrooms were all polymer clay. It seemed to work fine. I decided to use it on my book necklaces, thinking I need to seal it. After drying for almost a week now, my books are still sticky to the touch. How can I fix this?
Hi 👋🏻 I'm looking for a spray sealer (for clay with chalk pastel and pigments in/on). BUT I'm in the UK and not only is PYM ii not available in my country according to Blue Bottle Tree it's been discontinued so I can't even try to import it. I'd love and updated video.. Especially for spray dealers, matte finish and available internationally would be amazing..!!
It's been 4 years since ive polymer clayed and i'm sort of out of the loop, but i do remember matte and satin varnishes being a no go for polymer clay. Would you say liquid polymer clay thinned and lightly sponged onto polymer clay and rebaked would be a good choice as a matte sealer? If so i'm thinking liquid translucent sculpey if it's matte looking enough, and if not do they have any varnishes on the market that came out since then that wont do anything weird to polymer clay? I'm looking for a brushed on option rather than spray. I've been looking around and keep coming across old articles that I've already read from years ago. I'm making charms and it would be a shame for me to cover the whole thing in gloss if i don't have to because some areas would do better for matts and satins. I know i don't absolutely have to protect them all the time but i hate seeing the work get oily and dirty from skin oils or scratched from occasional handling.
Hi question! I want to make a diy snowglobe and want to use polymer clay to make a small sculpture, is it okay to be submerged in water or should i put a waterproof sealant on the sculpture??
Hi! Very Informative video. I want to seal a polymer clay model to use as a silicone mold to cast a resin replica. I apparently cannot use just a bare polymer clay model because of the sulfer which will disturb the silicone curing. Which sealant would you recommend I use?
Hi, you've probably gotten this one a million times before. But I've been afraid to use anything but spray on my stuff with pearlex powders, because I'm afraid that using a brush to seal the finish will rub off the powder or chalk. How do I brush it on withou ruining my finish?
srvntlilly I have made polymer clay charms before with chalk on it . After it's baked I seal it with gloss , the chalk ( or pastel) doesn't seem to come off when I apply the gloss using a brush . So I don't think it'll come off . Just make sure it's baked properly.
i bought Aleene's Acrylic Sealer GLOSS Finish i don't know if a sprayed too much cuz it is a bit sticky i did overspray may be the result some parts are dry no sticky but the part where it ran down is sticky also sealed some beautiful Glass eye with resin and used the same sealer and there great no sticky, i brought it up to suggest the product if you want to look at buying it at Walmart they also sell the MATTE version which i have to get a Can, oh it is in Spray can B4 i forget no Marble inside to shake hope it helps, but i did want to try one of these sealers? i want to ask one question I'm new to Chalk pastels, how did you apply Ur pastel chalks to the flower on 4:25 also PYM is no longer manufactured thebluebottletree.com/pym-ii-polymer-clay-spray-sealer/
i am hand buffing literally with some cloths i have. should i seal these peices? it takes so long doing this by hand that i dont want my work undone thru not doing the job properly.please can you advice me...subby from new zealand,i love your videos thanks
I am a beginner and I plan to use gold leaf paper in my clay. I watched your video and it appears pym 2 would be the best one for me. I can't find where to get ir. Can you help me? I looked on Amazon and did not see it, but may b there and it's just me lol. Thank you
I can relate... strong smells give me a headache as well, though not to the level of migraines, thankfully! Most of the Acrylic varnishes have very low odor. Anything oil based will have a stronger smell, so I would avoid those. The Ultradome UV resin has does have a slight smell, but it is faint in comparison to other UV Resins which can have extremely strong smells. Kato Liquid Polyclay smells stronger than the other liquid clays. Renaissance wax has a faint smell, that doesn't bother me. Glazing medium has almost no smell. Hope that helps!
Thanks for the info, Cindy. I have a question about Posh Rainbow Inks, do you happen to know if they are alcohol based, or can be used with raw polymer clay? I've had some for years, they are still good and wondering if I can use them with clay. Any info you can give me would be great. Thanks.
Are they water repellent? And some acrylic mediums also work to varnish paintings, do you think they can be used too for varnishing? And are they water repellent too? Sorry for asking so much but im looking for an alternative for uv resin for poly clay jewelry
If you need polymer clay to be water repellent, you don't need to add any finish. Polymer clay is plastic and naturally water repellent. As far as varnishes for paintings or any finish for that matter, it is always best to test!
Super helpful video thank you! Now that there are so many extra flexible clays made (cosclay, fimo leather effect etc) would you consider making a video about which glazes are most flexible/non cracking? I'm worried about using varathane or some other very shiny finish on a necklace I'm planning on bending to get on and off
I need Gesso to stick to Polymer clay but it rubs off even after days of drying! I have tried to paint the clay with Acrylic Paints but they rub off it too! I'm wanting to paint a model that I'm hoping to keep for year's, is there anything that I could try. Thank you in advance, take care. 👍😷👍
Acrylic and Gesso should be sticking, are you sure you're using oven baked polymer clay and not something else? If it is Polymer Clay then perhaps the surface needs a good cleaning with rubbing alcohol or acetone? That may help the paint stick better. Once you have the paint sticking well, you can pop it back into the oven for about 10 minutes to heat set it. That helps the acrylic paint and polymer bond better together. Hope that helps!
@@PolymerClayTutor Thank you so much for replying I really appreciate it. I've run out of Acetone but I do have Isopropanol Alcohol would that be OK to use? Yes it's definitely oven bake polymer clay. It's years since I used Polymer, but I had no problems then! I've learnt something new, heat setting acrylic paint. I've heard of heat setting paint but I obviously thought that it must be a special paint. I'll have a go at cleaning the parts with Isopropanol Alcohol, I have some pieces of polymer that's been baked but I didn't use so I'll test them with it first. Then follow your advice of heat setting the paint if the Isopropanol works. Thanks once again you're a STAR👍😷👍
@@PENFOLD1962 Thank you so much for saying that! It's really appreciated. 🙏 99% Isopropyl Alcohol works well for cleaning surfaces. Acetone actually eats into the clay a little and is much stronger. Try the alcohol first and if that isn't strong enough, try the acetone. I recently found a bottle of pure acetone in a pump bottle at DollarTree for $1.50 so it shouldn't be too hard to find if you need it. Use it in moderation though, it is a pretty harsh chemical. The Isopropyl Alcohol is much safer.
Hi there, yeah sadly PYMII is no longer being made. Mod Podge Spray is not a good alternative though... from what I hear it is not compatible with polymer clay. Helmar Crystal Kote Matte and Upol Glossy are supposed to be great replacements that are compatible. I haven't personally tested them myself yet... so many products, so little time!
I was wondering if you could use one of the glazes that dries sticky for the glitter burnishing technique (saw it on simplynailogical and wanted to replicate it on my pieces but obviously I couldn't use nail polish...sorry if the comment is everywhere but basically I was wondering if it is possible to use a glaze that dries sticky, burnish glitter on it, then seal it with uv resin?
Hey I came across this product called Goldens archival varnish on Amazon that comes in a spray. I wonder if you have tested it on clay ? Maybe it's an alternative to the PYMII? Is it good for both polymer clay and metal ?
I just used the Liquitex varnish and it just beaded up on my baked clay. It looks exactly like the bottle in the video. Any idea why it won't work on my clay? Is there more than one type? Our store only had this particular one though --Liquitex professional satin varnish (I thought I would try the satin instead of matte -- that is the main difference from the one in the video).
I asked a question in another video but it had been 2 yrs. w/o comments so will keep trying. I know what not to use, even tho tutorials recommended Minwax polycrylic and Krylon UV resistant gloss. Those two ruined my pieces. I need to know what to use or seal baked clay with dried alcohol inks on the surface. Please help.
Im fairly new to Fimo polymer clay lil charms & making lil dinosaurs for my lil grandson. Do I bake first then glaze...Or do I glaze then bake? Im confused can you please help?
Have you ever used Mod Podge Dimensional Magic on a piece and later varnished it? I use Minwax Polyurethane for most pieces, but some need more dimension. I've read that the Mod Podge turns cloudy if wet, which I know is true when I wet sanded a piece I messed up.
Though that sounds like a creative approach, I'm not sure if that would be your best option. If it were me, I would use UVResin instead to get your dimension. It is inexpensive, easy to use, incredibly beautiful and super durable. A much better option imo. (I have videos on UV Resin, if you want to see how it works.)
What is the difference between Liquitex BASICS Varnish and the red label product you have in this video? BASICS has a black label and I found it at Hobby Lobby. I made a large batch of new beads that I wet-sanded with four different grits and allowed to dry completely. I dipped all the beads in the Liquitex BASICS Gloss Varnish and hung them to dry overnight. Now all my beads are tacky. Help!
+Dee Stillman Some varnishes are too thick to dip beads or charms on them. It is always better to brush thin layers of varnish until you get what you are looking for.
Where do you find PYM II? I can’t find it online or in stores (Chicago area). I need something that dries quickly on round or other curved beads (that have gold leaf, other surface treatments) without creating drips like the liquid Sculpey glazes. Is there another spray you’d recommend? Love your video tips!
Hi there, PYMII has been discontinued. If you're looking for a good comparable product, try Helmar Crystal Kote in Matte. Here it is in my Amazon Shop. amzn.to/2NN5WNA
I read somewhere that if you use the Golden Varnish (specifically Matte) that you have to rebake the piece after it's applied or else it will can be scratched off. Is this true?
You can bake polymer clay in some silicone molds, but not all. If the mold does not say it is heat safe, you would need to check with the company that makes it or take the chance of test baking an empty mold to see if it can handle going into the oven. Unfortunately there is no set rule that I know of to know exactly which molds work and which ones don't.
I know I'm like a year late but could u plz plz tell me if I could use floor glaze? I forget what it's called but that's what imma call it .3. . Plz some one answer.
I can't seem to find the 'faux dichroic glass' tutorial on your website. Is it not available anymore? The link in this video's info box doesn't work either..
Hey. When I work with Polymer clay I make necklaces with crystals and the clay, with lots of detailed swirls etc made from the clay but I noticed that on the necklace I wear nearly every day a few of the swirls are breaking off in places, would it be recommended to seal it to avoid that?? I don't use any of the things you mentioned above (paints etc) so I didn't think it would be needed but now bits have started breaking off ): thanks!
Polymer clay breaks if it is a bad brand, isn't baked at the right temp or isn't baked long enough. I do have several videos on brands and baking that should help you get to the bottom of your breaking issue. Good luck!
Hi Josie, that would be a good thing to test. Just make up a small sample and try the Clear Gesso to see how it does. Make sure to leave your test sample for quite awhile to see how it reacts with the clay over time. It is something that I have been meaning to test myself, but just haven't gotten to yet. Let me know how it goes!
Yes, resin plays very nicely with polymer clay... but you do need to test it, because resin doesn't play nicely with everything else you can put onto polymer clay ie. some paints, waxes, finishes, etc. So test on scrap first.
I saw on one of your videos that sometimes if you do something (???) to the clay and then try to paint it with acrylic paint, the object remains tacky and never fully dries. But I cannot remember what caused that nor if there was anything I could do about it. I have such an object and it is really nice, but sticky. What can I do? thanks
I don't work with Air Dried Porcelain, so you would need to test it to be sure, but it wouldn't surprise me that much if the results were similar to polymer clay.
As long as you keep the clay only on the outside, away from the rim of the mug and your lips only touch ceramic/glass and not the polymer clay, it will be safe to drink from. Like I mentioned in this video, polymer clay is plastic and doesn't have to be sealed. It can handle being washed, no problem, if you have baked it properly.
PolymerClayTutor thank you! Some of them do touch the rim and are painted i need something to seal it so it’s drinkable and will protect the paint when being washed.
Hi does anyone know if colored pencil it graphite pencil on polymer clay once sealed will last/not rub off/not fade? Any help would be greatly appreciated 💛
Graphite should be fine on polymer clay and I can't see why it would fade or rub off if it were sealed, though it might smear a little when putting on a sealer. Since I haven't done that specifically though, I would try a test sample first to figure out the best method for sealing it.
Hi, just for everyone's knowledge : DO NOT USE Talens Acrylic Varnish Matt for polymer - it sticks even after 24 hours :(
Thanks for reporting back MrsGilbera! We all appreciate hearing about your experience!
I sprayed lacquer to seal my clay but its very sticky after a whole day of drying ☹. I don't know what to do now
You may be out of luck.
PolymerClayTutor: a) does the sealant go on before or after baking? b) also, does this video apply to air-dry polymer as well? Thanks:)
Great tutorial. I have used Gamblin Cold Wax Medium. I used this on my watercolor paintings. Is that O.K.? I wanted a mat finish on my clay beads.
Will baked polymer clay react with other plastics, namely polystyrene and acrylic?
Eamonn Ferris No, once it is baked it won't react with any other material.... at least I have never seen it react with anything.

Will polymer clay remain flexible after resin coating?
Hi Cindy! Thank you so much for this tutorial. You answered all my questions. Have a great day! :)
You too Leslie!
Do you need to seal when you using grourge paint or acrylic paints on dry air clay?
I always seal my polymer clay because I worry about the paints chipping. I just bought a matte varnish and I wanted to see how it held up
How about daler rowney soluble Matt varnish?? Does it on any polymer clay? Have not seen it in your video.

Very informative...thank you. Is there any sealer you can think of, to make a baked polymer clay item food safe?
There are food grade resins that you can use but you would have to Google that. I don't have any advice, since I haven't done that myself yet.
Is one layer of varnish good or should one use 2 or more? Do you sand between the layers of varnish?
how about for air dry clay do we need to seal it? would really appreciate a reply, please. TIA!
Hi question! I want to make a diy snowglobe and want to use polymer clay to make a small sculpture, is it okay to be submerged in water or should i put a waterproof sealant on the sculpture??
Polymer clay is just plastic when it is baked, so it is waterproof. Usually, finishes are more of a problem than the clay is.
What do you recommend to seal gold and/or silver leaf on Fimo Classic? (I still have a good stash of it.)

If you need polymer clay to be water repellent, you don't need to add any finish. Polymer clay is plastic and naturally water repellent. As far as varnishes for paintings or any finish for that matter, it is always best to test!
Can you use matte glaze too?
I can’t find PYM 2 anywhere, can I use mod podge spray instead?
Does Mr. Color Spray react with polymer clay? Not every water-based acrylic varnish is suitable for this, it doesn't dry properly
Thanks, this is really helpful. I live watching your videos. You are such a fantastic teacher. Thank You
Thank you Artie, I appreciate the kind words! 💖💖💖
Hey I came across this product called Goldens archival varnish on Amazon that comes in a spray. I wonder if you have tested it on clay ? Maybe it's an alternative to the PYMII? Is it good for both polymer clay and metal ?
Hello, and when we use acrylyc paintings what we need to use to protect the color ?
I just used the Liquitex varnish and it just beaded up on my baked clay. It looks exactly like the bottle in the video. Any idea why it won't work on my clay? Is there more than one type? Our store only had this particular one though --Liquitex professional satin varnish (I thought I would try the satin instead of matte -- that is the main difference from the one in the video).
I bought premo sculpey but it is very tough and it breaks into a verysmall pieces and I can't get it together again help me please
Please help.
great and well explained info! thank you so much
You're very welcome!
I used the liquitex matte varnish on polymer clay fimo soft. And after a couple days it was very sticky. Cann you tell my what happend?
Im fairly new to Fimo polymer clay lil charms & making lil dinosaurs for my lil grandson. Do I bake first then glaze...Or do I glaze then bake? Im confused can you please help?
I'm curious where you get the PYM II? I can't find it at the hardware store or Amazon. I haven't tried Michaels...
I dont use a coating.
Hi I work mostly with air dry clay. Your advice pls madam. Thank you so much.
Me too any advice
Does anyone know if Winsor & Newton Galeria Matt Varnish would work for polymer clay? It's the one in a glass see through bottle. Thanks!
Thank you. I'll have to try that.
What if it's normal clay but just needs cooking?
I like the mini drawer tools
Where do you find PYM II? I can’t find it online or in stores (Chicago area). I need something that dries quickly on round or other curved beads (that have gold leaf, other surface treatments) without creating drips like the liquid Sculpey glazes. Is there another spray you’d recommend? Love your video tips!
Hi there, PYMII has been discontinued. If you're looking for a good comparable product, try Helmar Crystal Kote in Matte. Here it is in my Amazon Shop. amzn.to/2NN5WNA
If god exists, you are doing her work! Thankyou for sharing. What a precious little life. You are a good person ❤️
I read somewhere that if you use the Golden Varnish (specifically Matte) that you have to rebake the piece after it's applied or else it will can be scratched off. Is this true?
Thank you.
I want to make polymer soap dishes. would I have to seal those
Helpful video, thanks!
Hi can we bake polymer clays in any silicone molds?
You can bake polymer clay in some silicone molds, but not all. If the mold does not say it is heat safe, you would need to check with the company that makes it or take the chance of test baking an empty mold to see if it can handle going into the oven. Unfortunately there is no set rule that I know of to know exactly which molds work and which ones don't.
I know I'm like a year late but could u plz plz tell me if I could use floor glaze? I forget what it's called but that's what imma call it .3. . Plz some one answer.
Another site I went to used Future Floor Wax. Have you ever tried this and tested this as a sealant? Is it ok for Polymer clay jewelry?
I can't seem to find the 'faux dichroic glass' tutorial on your website. Is it not available anymore? The link in this video's info box doesn't work either..
Here's a link to the paid tutorial: www.beadvideos.com/back-issues-02/#vol-026
Good luck!
Can I use liquitex Clear Gesso as a sealer for the clay even though we use it as a primer for acrylic painting?
Hi Josie, that would be a good thing to test. Just make up a small sample and try the Clear Gesso to see how it does. Make sure to leave your test sample for quite awhile to see how it reacts with the clay over time. It is something that I have been meaning to test myself, but just haven't gotten to yet. Let me know how it goes!
What kind of brush do you use to apply the varnish? I can’t seem to find a brush that won’t leave streaks
Hi Angela, I have a video on what brushes to use for glazing here: th-cam.com/video/z6Rvy4xsQtQ/w-d-xo.html
I was wondering about the minwax one for sealing sculpted animals with polymer clay and using pastel chalk to enhance the designs.
You can do that. Just test in an inconspicuous area first to make sure your finish doesn't make your chalks bleed.
Great video Cindy thankyou.
This helped me a lot!
Happy to help!
I see that you have uv resin on your table, can you use just regular epoxy Resin to seal polymer clay?
Yes, resin plays very nicely with polymer clay... but you do need to test it, because resin doesn't play nicely with everything else you can put onto polymer clay ie. some paints, waxes, finishes, etc. So test on scrap first.
@@PolymerClayTutor OK thank you PCT, greatly appreciated
Can polyacrylic be used?
Yes usually... but it is always good to do a test sample first and let it set for a while first before using a brand that you haven't tried before.
@@PolymerClayTutor thank you dear.
I saw on one of your videos that sometimes if you do something (???) to the clay and then try to paint it with acrylic paint, the object remains tacky and never fully dries. But I cannot remember what caused that nor if there was anything I could do about it. I have such an object and it is really nice, but sticky. What can I do? thanks
has anyone every used goldens polymer gloss on clay, im new to it all and it's the closest thing i have that i can think of?
Can I use the varathane varnish with air dry clay?
Probably, though I would test it first.
Hi there is this the same for air dried porcelain ?
I don't work with Air Dried Porcelain, so you would need to test it to be sure, but it wouldn't surprise me that much if the results were similar to polymer clay.
I use my polymer to custom make mugs. Do you know of a sealer i can use to it safe to drink from and also with protect it when it’s being washed?
As long as you keep the clay only on the outside, away from the rim of the mug and your lips only touch ceramic/glass and not the polymer clay, it will be safe to drink from. Like I mentioned in this video, polymer clay is plastic and doesn't have to be sealed. It can handle being washed, no problem, if you have baked it properly.
PolymerClayTutor thank you! Some of them do touch the rim and are painted i need something to seal it so it’s drinkable and will protect the paint when being washed.
I found a new spay high gloss that's been working on my polymer clay.. Please test it yourself.. It's
It's called speedball Mona Lisa metal leaf spray sealer please test it. I love the high gloss you get.
@@PolymerClayTutor Thank you! 💗
