Gorgeous but emotionally estranged Scandinavian sisters experience terrifying and profound isolation, cry for self-validation, are let down or abandoned by men in their lives and send each other on guilt trips for 90 minutes and salvation comes as a result of unselfish love stemming from a shared moment of edenic childhood communion. This movie is like Frozen for adults.

Bergmann said that the red theme that ran through the film signified the interior of the soul. When I first saw this film back in 1990, (I've seen it twice since and it's the kind of film that never leaves you), I felt that the red signified the pain that was running through each woman I the film, they all had their different kind of pain for very different reasons, it was like their wounds were infected and cracking open and it was all oozing out.............

I saw Cries And Whispers in 1972 (if I remember right) in a theater premiere in L.A. while being a film student at Cal Arts. Many of the film students were in an altered state upon this.

skydavidhealth In 1972 I was taken to Cries and Whispers for my birthday! Not surprisingly, I wasn't in much of a celebratory mood afterwards. I've never forgotten the power of the film.

Holy shit, can you imagine listening to this for 40 minutes? I could only make it about 45 seconds.

it was beautiful to witness intimacy and melancholy interwoven so deeply.

I felt the color red represented both mortality and an externalization of the seething repressed emotions of the characters. The red is angry and hot in a destructive way - but not warm in a compassionate, empathetic way like the softer color scheme in the scenes where the maid cares for the dying sister.

Definitely agree with this: a hypnotic inescapable dread. Also, the description you guys gave of the use of red match Taylor Swift's take on the meaning of her album Red. I think if I were a filmmaker, as of now, Cries and Whispers would join a very special less than 10 films list I would keep going back everytime I start working on a film

You rule, man. Life stuff happened and the channel went quiet for a few months. I'm back though. I've got some videos coming soon, including more group discussions and some other new kind of content as well.
You're the one we should be thanking! Thanks for watching/listening! I'm a small channel, so the small amount of positive feedback we do receive means an awful lot to me.
