I originally bought my EOS 1Ds Classic back in 2010 as my first DSLR. Something I had wanted to try since it came out but could NEVER afford new. It lasted a couple years before it had a mysterious error that could not be fixed even by Canon themselves and I sold it for $250. Broken. Going back through my old images, I found the images from the EOS 1Ds and they are incredible! Most of them need nothing straight from the camera. But the interface it uses is extinct, everything is a two handed operation and you can't magnify your images on the postage stamp size screen. Arguably, I'll say that even back then I had some real appreciation for the noise pattern this camera produced, and I find it distinctive. As blown away as I am by the image quality coming out of it, I think my 6D Mark II and 90D are giving me the evil lens. They must be jealous!

I'm a 1Ds user and agree 100% with your video review, you nailed the good, the bad and the ugly. My favorite lens when using the 1Ds is the awesome and under appreciated because it's a variable aperture lens is the incredible 28-80 f/2.8-4.0 USM L, a very sharp and cheap lens! I think the lens is older than the camera.

I am really glad you like it. I owned my 1DS for 4 years and it takes amazing still photos for the price point. The Canon L lenses really make this camera shine. I do use my ISO up to 1000 ISO. But overall I use flashes and strobes. So low light indoor performance always shines with this camera with flashes and/or strobes. I use my Canon 7D for sports because it shoots 8 FPS. but I use my 1DS for portraits and nice overall still photos. I am still waiting for the 1DX mark II to come down in price as well as the 1DS mk 3. because it has a 21 megapixel size sensor. As far as video performance. I am glad the canon C100. Panasonic EVA1, Sony FS7 and so forth are dropping in price so I will be able to buy those cinema cameras really cheap so I can shoot amazing films with those cameras. Overall I think the 1DS is a absolute amazing full frame professional camera for under 400 bucks today. with flashes and strobes. this camera rocks. Great review. I am glad I am not the only that loves the 1DS.

Just took delivery of a mint 1Ds (SN-1180xx would anybody know the approx prod date?) for the equivalent of 225USD. Took some shots and checked the shutter counter and it came out at just 38047. Love the camera, need to get a good lens. Seems like most offered "used" 50mm canon lenses are counterfeit Yongnuo junk, whether it is the 1.8 II or the newer STM. Had wanted to get a 40mm STM, but when majority of the new ones on flea bay are offered at half the Canon official price out of Japan, you know something is up. Great channel Steven, you inspire and make people think. Don't stop.

Sooooo many people get hung up on needing and thinking that the latest most expensive equipment is going to turn them into Richard Avedon which of course it never ever will. Put some decent glass on the front of an old a camera and then the rest is up to you, learn the craft don't expect tech to do it for you. I have a 1DS MKIII and still love it and am not looking to change it anytime soon.

Even its full frame sensor running in 11MP CMOS sensor , it's perfect for low speed shooter that chasing for quality , however it's downside is it's max ISO only able to reach 1250 , then you gonna need all your lens asset that has f/2.8 or faster lens to support the image creation. However , it's the legend camera in 2020 !

i got mine at around the same time I got my 80D mainly for the lolz. The user interface is terrible, the low light next to no good, it weighs a tonne and I love it. This was the dream when I got my first DSLR (a 300D) and in many ways the reason I love using it is because it still has that old school charm. That and it still takes great photos (pity about the user...).

If anyone is interested, I would like to attest to the ' built like a tank' description these cameras often get.
I dropped mine off of an actual sherman tank once,
I stood up and swung my bag over my shoulder, I hadnt done the top zip up properly and the ds flew out, bounced on the tank and then on the tarmac. I may have chipped some paint
    off of the sherman...🤫
I managed to finish photographing the runners I was there for and it continued working for almost a year before something that was dislodged inside found the shutter. :(
Its a weighty lump and the double button press can be a pain for some but once you have learned all the combinations you can change a lot of variables without moving your eye from the viewfinder, which is nice and easy to see through.
iso is limited but just dont try to photograph in the dark oh and a good battery is £100! I bought one and then found that I can make refreshed batteries myself with some tabbed rechargeable AA's in the old battery cases. Fiddly but very cheap. And with a higher mah too.
I keep thinking about clearing out my old gear particularly as I don't use it much, no real inspiration anymore..but its worth so much more to me than a couple of hundred quid!

IMO I think the 1D Mk III is a good compromise for most people it only a bit newer but is much more usable in terms of speed and ergonomics (the ISO got its own button!) It has 10.1 megapixels, 10fps burst speeds and a more intuitive interface. But it has that akward 1.3x crop sensor and that can make or break someones purchase decision :/

I really like it, I have a 1d classic and have used the 1ds ii, loved both of them ,it's not about the image quality but pure photography and the process of shooting, howerver the original 1d does do pretty good upto iso400, iso800 is managable and 1600 would be a with some noise reduction , 3200+ noise reduction is ok for instagram but there dveleops noise patterns

    • @marksmusicplace3627
      @marksmusicplace3627 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I think it might be a problem with the electronics in the shoe or the camera itself. Unless its an aftermarket flash like the yongnuo. I notice my canon flashes sync well with my 1DS. Some times aftermarket flashes can be an issue with older electronics because the tech are different than modern cameras. Unfortunately, if it is the camera itself, they no longer support repairs on this camera because it was discontinued 10 years ago. There might be a software upgrade for the 1DS but not sure.

What use case would you suggest for the 1DS?
    Too heavy for travel.
    Too slow for sport.
    Too low res for landscape.
    Too iso bound for event.
So studio it is, but that's generally pro work where price is less of an issue. Batteries and cards must also be an issue.

Well, for someone like me who’s done photography for 35 years, it was absolutely brilliant. I remember the excitement surrounding that camera for those of us looking for that full frame professional option from Canon. This channel, in case you’re not familiar, is me reviewing old cameras that I’ve owned for the past twenty years or so. In terms of what case would someone use the 1DS, I’d suggest it for anyone who has a sense of fun and likes taking great pictures. I’d suggest it for anyone who always wanted it back then but couldn’t afford it. I’d suggest it for anyone like me who appreciates the novelty of owning what were once monumental cameras that are now at an affordable price. The point being, the 1DS is still a great camera. If a person can’t take good pictures with the 1DS, the problem is more to do with their skill set than the camera itself. A talented photographer with a cheap camera will always outperform a novice with an expensive camera.

I'd definitely go with a newer body for a whole other host of issues, like newer processors, but camera support in apps, newer tech in general, better color science (on the chip), battery life ... grab a 5d Mk II for $300 and if you really need to save that money grab a Nikon D700 for $200, both of which are 6+ years newer than this body.

In terms of Canon, it’s kind of a toss-up between the 1DS and 5D Mark II. The 1DS gives you good autofocus with bad low-light performance whereas the 5D Mark II gives you better low-light with bad autofocus.

Vertical shutter does not work, nor the bottom display which shows the image quality selection, but I shoot RAW only all the time anyway. I used it for my event photography business for a full year. Plus, MOST IMPORTANTLY, these 1D Canons are still be best CHICK MAGNET (the number 1 reason for photography right?). The new mirrorless like the R5/Sonys etc looks like cheap small Rebel cameras, and the CHICKS just don't dig them.
