I think the main thing that tips me over is 12 keys: learn the major scale and all it's permutations in all 12. then work on all the other scales/modes...etc. I swear, just learning the CM scale in all it's permutations seems to be taking me a lifetime. at least I'm having fun working on it.

I hear you man. I am rowing on the same seas.
I decided after a few months on CM, to move over to AM, and now I have been here for about 3 months.
The thing that currently works with my learning curves, and again riding the waves, is thinking about the interval game and working through chords based on notes they share.
My ultimate goal is to be completely fluid on both guitar and piano.
      We gotta respect the Journey.
I pray you reach and exceed expectations that you placed upon yourself.
      Rock On

I feel like it helps me a lot to identify in any given key, which chromatic intervalz are the 9th and 12th frets. At least since I am very comfortable with modes, that method helps me anchor my key centers.
Like I play in B and G# a lot, so I'm familiar with E as the 11th and b6th respectively
