- "Barter's art harks back to Marsden Hartley and other American Modernists and their abstracting ways; a kind of school has sprung up in his impressive wake. You can hear the gallery-goer point to a brashly painted Maine landscape by a contemporary and say, 'I see a bit of Barter there.' Like Andrew Wyeth, he has his emulators.
And you can understand why: the appeal of Barter's stylized renderings of trees and rivers, mountains and clouds, is powerful. His ability to extract the essence of the landscape provokes marvel. He sees the geometry of a peak, the jagged coursing of woodland streams, and a snowfield's curving contours. His palette, often not for the faint of hue, underscores his lively vision.
He is a master simplifier, composing each canvas out of the core elements of the scene: trees, water, sky, and island, say. In the purity and boldness of his northern vision, Barter is kin to some of the painters in Canada's Group of Seven.
There is a lot of give and take in life, and Philip Barter's paintings reflect his our-of-the-ordinary journey. To play on his name, this artist had bartered plenty to achieve the stature he enjoys today: one of our very finest." --Carl Little, Maine art critic and author

I've been living here in Maine for nearly 40 years. I may not be well educated in the names of great artists, but I am slightly embarrassed that I never heard of Mr. Barter until today. Thank you for introducing me to an artist. His style and color pallet are truly amazing. His personality is perfect. Thank you for sharing this!
there are unknown artists all over here and there doing good work. i know a guy in NY who is phenomenal, and hardly known, but he keeps on keeping on.
I like his painting style, full of colour and semi-abstract.
This Mainer says 'GORGEOUS!!' Yes we have lots of gorgeous but to see it done this way is amazing. So fresh. What a lovely man

Lovely
The folk art of Maud Lewis and Alfred Wallis comes to mind.
Thinking along the same line. I think that he and Maud would have got on well together.
How wonderful....
I would love to come a paint with you. I think we see the world a little bit the same way. Thank you for sharing your work with us, I think its pure, humble, and beautiful.
Would have loved to see more.
Really like the work!
WONDERFULL thanks
Que arte linda!😊
What an interesting man. He's right, though. The real colors of the seascapes would be boring. I like how he adds life to it all.
Packy Stowa.
Not abstract? Maybe more stripped down?
