- Customer's bike wasn't shifting gears anymore. Crusty old shifters were worn out and gummed up. The best solution is a new set of shifters, levers, cables and brake pads for a bonus. Another relaxing BikeFarmer bicycle repair. Kick back and enjoy!

So many life lessons in this one. You are my hero Andy, no lie. If I ever get around to growing up, I wanna be like you.
Bikes are easier to like than most people. ;)
Loved the video. Actually nice of you replacing the shifter combo's with Deore LX, I have a slightly newer version on my late 90s mountain bike and they work great. Those components were made to last!
So I saw the cables and shifters replaced with a little work. Then I thought about those other bike videos. They have these guys with big smiles on their faces and English accents. They show bikes that cost as much as my car is probably worth. These bikes are made out of high grade plastic and it's not easy to replace the cables, brake parts and other things.
Your sense of humor is back ❤
I ran several brands of canti’s and they all squealed. The problem was solved when I saw, pre-discs,Denise Betzema’s pro’ cross bike. She ran an uphanger from the fork crown to the brake. I got hold of one from SPA CYCLES in the UK and I’ve had strong, quiet brakes ever since….👍
Great video on rehabbing functional older componants. I am a fan of bench cleaning and testing those brake-shifter 7-8 speed combos before mounting. More than a few times, the right one is worn out and the left must never have been triggered. I ams not running any now for myself but I loved them on my winter beaters under bar mitts (pogies). Again I learned another tip on canti brakes.
Too nice shifters and levers for such a bike 😁. I hope these get recycled eventually, when the bike is ‘finished’, if it will ever be finished.
As crazy as it sounds, it is true
Great to see you Bike Farmer! And we know you're a good guy ☺️ 🚲
Thank you!
Points where I can’t relate as a home mechanics:
- I don’t have compressed air
- spray chemicals are very expensive, don’t last long, and I am concerned with filling the air where I work with these. I don’t use any.
- cables are $6 at the local store: tend to use and reuse. Same for housings, unless they are cracked, bent, too ugly.
Hey BikeFarmer!!!! I did 25km today!!!
Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty good!
Lol! I tend to spend more time with my bikes than people and I'm fine that !👍✌ 😁
Would you do a video explaining what a bike co-op is?
Omg that stem😮
Thanks!
wowza! Right out of the gates! Thanks so much!!
I have an old Trek 800 Antelope with the Shimano 100GS drivetrain and brakes. What would be a suitable (inexpensive) upgrade?
anyone else yelling at the screen to clean the frame while all the cables were off or just me
Good choice to keep that great bike going!
How does one decide when a rim is two worn for safe use?
I blew up one last week on a 25 years old bike. Not good. Bam! Flat tire in an instant. I had measured the wall thickness at 1mm.
Rockhoppers are fairly sought after. Great steel 90s MTB frame, cheap, versatile, receptive to mods w/ sweet colorways.
liking those little ratchets. quite useful.
he's right about these as great all round transportation devices. on road off road, anything!!1
I think that at this point you really need to show us a picture of the damn taco store across the street! Thanks for the video! I watched the whole thing and I’m not entirely sure why other than the fact that you are thoroughly entertaining in this post truth world
loved the brake rant
Better buy some hairspray😅 Thanks!
10/10
This bike broke just out of warranty :D
1st it appears. Morning Bike Farmer, happy Saturday, have a good one man!
I'm showing 2nd to @MNpicker :-(
@@bkefrmr I have to do better, ha!
@@skylerlovell1780 😁✌️
@ who doesn’t 🤷♂️
That tin of hairspray has been almost empty for the last month. Let me know the manufacturer, so that I took can buy this bottomless tin of hairspray. Mark
😂i was thinking the same thing
👍
This is gonna be fun!!
first!
forgot the furniture polish?
Good morning
Cables > electronic shifting.
Lol best example of post truth in cycling is the fact all the top pros are riding ebikes but people think its real. After that is chain waxing. Tho tbf the entire industry is a scam now pretty much 😂
Chain waxing is actually very good. But it is a time consuming process. But the chain really goes better and it last longer than lube. But a classic old clean and lube is good for who it is for!
@komoonkh chain waxing is not good, there are no peer reviewed studies by accredited researchers saying it is good, no other roller chain manufacturers recommend it for ANY application, I don't know any mechanic in any other profession who uses it, and NO professional cyclists use it either. Only bot accounts & paid shills claim it works... like you 🙄
Chain waxing can be cheap if you use canning wax. The bike people mak no money from that one.
@@komoonkh it is not good, no professional rider uses it & no roller chain manufacturer recommends it over oil.
@@daniellarson3068 any mineral oil is better than any wax. If you disagree, point me to a roller chain manufacturer that recommends using wax as a lubricant instead of oil.
Is Speed better than WD40?
I used the wd40 silicone quick drying. Wanted to leave a little lubrication after flushing old grease. Brought some old brifters and derailleurs back to life.
When it comes to replace vs reuse with consumable parts, I look at it as a market-driven thing. Sure, with racing machines or posh bikes, it's nice to have all new stuff frequently. But seems like the market that Andy is in, customers don't want to pay that level of parts and labor costs like MAMILs would pay in Minneapolis, and they likely wouldn't really tell the difference anyway. So, in the end, who is really benefitting?
he only replies to star people...how ELITIST! Typical bike mechanic.
we need a Trump rant video next LOL
Thanks!
