A third movement not rushed.. but not lacking in momentum. A classic performance by the pianist who truly “broke the ice”… and continued to open opportunities for others to follow. A great man.

The great Van Cliburn. No one can be like him. In all the piano concerts he played, you can see him feel the meaning, the emotions, the dynamics of the composer. As if he is being overwhelmed in what the composer felt when writing their masterpiece. No one is even close.

What an outstanding, intuitive post. Absolutely correct.
I saw him play the Greig in Milwaukee. Front row. No one can ever take that memory from me.
For solo works, Horowitz. For concerti, Cliburn.

What an immense privilege it is to be able to hear and see this up close. To see his fingers flying across the keys -- closer than If I were sitting in the first rows. Cliburn was my first musical crush (I was around 12 or 13). the first purchase I ever made with my own money was the LP of his Moscow performance win of the Tchaikovsky Concerto #1. It still moves me to tears. He only improved with age. I'm grateful to the internet and TH-cam for these musical gems.

Aww, believe me, I understand exactly how you feel. I adored Van and sat front row for many of his concerts. I would throw flowers on stage as they did in Moscow. He was very touched by the gesture and never forgot it. Whenever he spotted me, he would play "Widmung" as his final encore. He knew it was my favorite. He was a brilliant pianist, an absolute genius, and the sweetest, kindest, most thoughtful person. I had some wonderful conversations with him over the years. We shared a deep love for Rachmaninoff. The Rach 3 was our favorite concerto. I played that recording you mention ENDLESSLY when a little girl, tears streaming down my cheeks. The beauty of Van's playing touched my soul like no other. There was something transporting - something divine - about Van's playing. His gorgeous singing tone shimmered like burnished gold. There was a nobility and elegance in his playing. I still can't believe he's been gone from us for 10 years now. The last time I saw Van play in concert was at Tanglewood in 2001. He played one of my very favorites, the thrilling Grieg! Those opening bars give me chills every time. When Van played them, it was absolutely electrifying. As always, there were a few gasps in the audience. The power he had in those huge hands! (He could stretch to 13 keys!). He told me long ago that the Grieg was his mother's favorite concerto. He was so devoted to her, but I think she was "a bit much" to deal with. 🙄 Mrs. Cliburn was a magnificent pianist herself but denied a career because her parents didn't think it was "proper" for an unmarried lady. She definitely loved all the attention when Van's career took off. Van took very good care of his mother. She lived to a very ripe old age. But back to Tanglewood 2001. Andre Previn conducted. That was pretty thrilling. That afternoon, I went to "the best florist in Lenox" and had the florist make a gorgeous bouquet of 3 dozen burgundy roses - Van's favorite flowers - mixed with bright green Irish Bells (a nod to his Irish ancestry). The color combination was stunning - and the florist who arranged the flowers was Russian. I thought, "THIS is no coincidence. It was MEANT to be." When I told the lady who the flowers were for, she was overcome with emotion. Later, after the concert, I told Van that a very sweet, older Russian lady had made his floral arrangement and cried when I told her who it was for! As I stood below the front of the stage holding Van's flowers, he was taking his bows with Previn. As he rose up from his bow, he spotted me peering at him over the massive bouquet. His face broke into a grin. I gave him a little wave and mouthed "Howdy!" to my favorite Texan - and he was so tickled and he waggled his "asparagus fingers" back at me, dropping Previn's hand and rushing to the edge of the stage to give me a kiss. He said, "You surprised me!" He was so warm, so sweet. The look on Previn's face was priceless. He didn't know who I was because I was no one famous - "just a fan!" Moments later, it started raining like mad as people were lining up to meet Van backstage. I could feel my stillettos sinking into the mud. My companion said someone was standing at the stage door calling my name. It was Van's devoted partner of 20 years, Tommy Smith, waving me over. My friend and I were able to talk to Van and Tommy for several minutes, then Van gestured toward the open Green Room door. My heart skipped a beat when I saw my bouquet had been placed on top of his practice piano. How thoughtful. Standing in the room were Andre Previn, his ex-wife, Mia Farrow (!!), the brilliant, genius composer John Williams, and several people with the Van Cliburn Foundation. It was very sweet of Van to let us "have a peek!" My friend and I didn't linger for long and avoided making direct eye contact, but I did steal a quick look at Ms. Farrow 😮 before we turned to leave. I don't think we were in that room for more than a minute, two at the most. But it was very thoughtful and kind of Van to invite us in. That was the kind of person Van was - intensely private but very warm, humble and kind. He had the most impeccable manners, such an elegant, thoughtful man. I will never forget him.

He felt he was given a gift that required him to, in turn, give music to others - others who were not as fortunate as to be able to play these pieces. So to him, the listener was always part of the performance. I wish I could tell you what it was like to attend one of his recitals, especially if it was in a small venue. It was as if the music he created filled the listener's entire being. I realize how melodramatic that might sound. But honestly, it's the truth. He was mesmerizing.

Thank you so much for posting this wonderful video. Van Cliburn never lost his looks, his charm or his talent. He became even more expressive at the keyboard as he grew older. Such a treat to watch this. What a remarkable man .... I never met him but sat close to him one beautiful evening at the outside sofa lounge at Grace on Main Street in Fort Worth. He was engaged in conversation with a young couple .. assuming a Cliburn pianist and his wife. Smiling, attentive, full of life ... so wish he was still with us today ... A shooting star that lit our lives with beautiful music .. the epitome of a gracious southern gentleman and loving son .. may he rest in peace.

Very true. I had the pleasure of meeting him several times during the 1960s. He was always kind, gracious and humble. His mom was also sweet. A particularly wonderful thing about his performances was that he considered the audience to be vitally important and felt he should endeavor to connect with them personally via the music. Because he was generous by nature, he did this magnificently, and I think that was one of the keys to his popularity. He did have difficulties for a time beginning in the mid- late 60s. I attended so many of his performances, but it was obvious he gradually became not up to his earlier work. He even said he had lost his gift. Of course that wasn't true - no one loses a gift. I suspect he was merely exhausted from concertizing pretty much non-stop. He withdrew from most public performances for a while and made a lot of recordings. Then came back gangbusters years later. These Russian performances were so powerful and wonderful. They move me deeply whenever I hear them.

Yes - he really does understand Liszt, doesn't he? Much more so than others who just bang out his compositions, reinforcing the unfortunate Liszt reputation as just noisy ego. Cliburn's mom studied with Arthur Friedheim, who was a student of Liszt. She taught her son well.

I wholeheartedly embrace your first three words. No other pianist of the 20th Century created the kind of excitement for viewers and listeners than this man did. Did any woman ever faint at a performance of Horowitz? or Richter? Richter cried, from joy, when he witnessed Cliburn's performance of the Rachmaninov Third Piano Concerto at the Tchaikovsky Competition in 1958. Some critics weigh the "greatness" of a musician by their technical prowess, the span of their careers, and by the breadth of their repertories. But, some artists -- Cliburn, Callas -- achieve the deepest magic that audiences ever experience, which is why these artists are so revered by their fans. I am one of Cliburn's fans.

But in this case, both - Cliburn and the orchestra were so united and gave an absolutely triamphant, resolute and an astounding performance of Ferencz List concerto! It always sounded to me like collision of two nature's powers: one is very tranquil, calm and serene and another is violent, wild and turbulent - like an oceanic storm, which is coming. The finale was magnificent! I went to many concerts and recitals of his in the 60s. I don't think I was ever at a non-orchestral recital where he didn't play this. Once in an outdoor summer concert, the orchestra had left the stage and he came out to do a lot of encores - he was pretty famous for that. He began to play this piece, one of his favorites, when an older woman several rows back from the stage rose from her seat and, in a lovely operatic voice, started to sing Schumann's beautiful song. Cliburn looked at her and was delighted that she continued to sing while he played. When they were finished he rose and applauded, as did the rest of us in the audience. It was a magical moment under the stars that I'll remember as long as I live.

Agreed. Yes - and I had a very strange thing happen to me - invited on the day of....an hour before.......to a "house concert" in town, in Fort Worth, and I was just given an address without knowing anything about anything. I mean I literally knew nothing about where I was going, what I was going to be doing there, who was there.....nothing. I showed up in jeans and a t-shirt to a several multi-million dollar home in Westover where the real guests were just getting up from a massive table, from supper, which I could see through the windows from the front lawn. I entered through the back where my wife's acquaintance, who was working the event as a bartender, met us.
Two hard drinks into this event - in someone else's massive backyard overlooking the Trinity River where everything was immaculate and I felt completely out of place - I mean think tuxes and evening gowns and high end jewelry and all that - to the 9's.....and suddenly our friend says "that's Cliburn over there."
I mean....I tripped over people and dogs and bushes and probably made it look like there was a 5 alarm fire somewhere behind me I was running from. He and I hugged, cried, and talked for at least 20 to 30 minutes while a group continued to gather round us waiting their turn and losing patience doing it. We were total strangers from the same place - our piano teachers knew one another in town back in the day - and for just that one brief moment we had known each other for several lifetimes over. It was magical. Then 2Cellos got up and performed for everyone. Van was front row and I took pictures.
He died the following year, the ceremony was at Broadway Baptist Church south of downtown and I didn't go because I didn't want to fall apart in public all over again.

I had no clue where the dinner was, all I was told was to dress well for the occasion. Little did I know that the person I was assigned to sit next to was non other than Herbert von Karajan. Yup, the Maestro himself actually requested I sit next to him. I almost died when I realized that. That experience was and continues to be one of my most cherished memories. I will add that no proper study of the Cold War should fail to include the uplifting story of Van Cliburn's fantastic accomplishment at its very height. Of course we must remember the incomparable Russian master pianist and pedagogue (and Moscow Conservatory Gold Medalist herself) that he was studying with at the time (Rosina Lhevinne), a fact that surely was fully understood by the careful jury at the time.

happy birthday dear Van 7/12 here is a brilliant example of your talent which will live forever, a great legacy you have left us with the competition bringing new pianists to the world -- I met you many years ago in Jacksonville FL, you would not remember me of course, it was after your performance of the Tchaikowsky with our local symphony, you were so tall and slender, very pale and I expressed my admiration to you -- you were so kind and smiled at me and thanked me for coming.....a memory i will treasure...

I do not understand how you came to the conclusion that there were empty seats. The concert was sold out. Take a look at the shots at 24:00, or at 43:00, or at 1:04. The hall is packed. Additional seats were placed in the aisles, which you can clearly see at, for example, 11:30. To me, it looks like a capacity violation that should have concerned the fire marshal.

During the Cold War, our main export to Russia was Van Cliburn for the occasional goodwill concerto performance; now we send artillery strikes, deployed by Ukraine. Like Bob Dylan would've said: "The times they are a'changing."
