I own the SQ Lab 612 Carbon and the SQ Lab 612 R Carbon and I prefer the 612 R over the 612 because it's geared to road bikes with more of a racing set up where the rider is leaning forward in a more aero position. The difference in preference may be that George likes to move around on his saddle and the 612 is longer than the 612R. I move around a bit but mostly stay put in the sweet spot.
A perfect summary. Additionally, as an ultra cyclist I can bear with the R for 200 milers about 12 hours with a lot of climbing, not a forward riding position, but for anything longer the standard 612 works better for me. We are all different hence so many options for saddles on the market.

I ride mountain bikes so short nose saddles are really helpful to avoid clothing snags on the nose of the saddle, since mountain bike clothes are pretty baggy. That's the main issue I've been having with my 612 demo saddle I've been trying out.
I was thinking about your comment while I was riding today. The weird thing about SQ Lab saddles is they used to put longer noses on them. Longer than standard road saddles. That made sense to me since you slide way forward on your saddle on steep grades. I’m sure you will find an SQ Lab saddle that will work for you they make great saddles.
Catching my shorts is the one thing I don't like about the 612. I'm constantly catching my shorts on the nose when I've gotten off the saddle to climb and am about to sit down. Note that this is with Lycra/Spandex roadie shorts.
I used the 612 standard saddle but even when properly fitted and having checked saddle height etc still found it to be uncomfortable, I swapped it out for the 612 Active with the soft elastomer and the difference was night & day - much more comfortable with no pain on the sit bones, personnal choice but for me it works where everything else has failed.
I tried the standard 612 (carbon) saddle, I have all of my bike fitting data available so I adjusted everything according to their instructions, according to information I got from watching your original videos but I sent it back it just didn’t agree with me. At least here in Germany if you send it back to them within 30 days you get your full money back. We also had the largest cycling exhibition in Europe here in the city where I live two weeks ago and I spent about 30 minutes talking to them at their booth about the saddle and positions and everything possible I tried all of their recommendations but in the end the design just doesn’t work for me.
That’s a shame it is a wonderful saddle. I have my entire crew on - men and women. We all do 100 milers every Saturday and everyone on the crew swears by how comfortable the saddle is for them. I have the Hybrid version, that is similar to the Dynamic. I used it for 2 years as I did not have any options to try any other type, nor the money to buy a new one until now. For me, it was much better than a flat saddle, but on longer rides, especially uphill, it numbed my private parts, as the cutout is not wide enough, nor the nose wide enough to accomodate the pressure. Also the saddle has a dent where you are supposed to sit, yet I was sliding back and forth in it. Downhill was a breeze with it and I loved the kinked nose design, it was so smooth to sit back from a super tuck. I'm trying to make friendship with the SP-01 but the width on that one either too big or too small. The large cutout is a magic though, no numbness on that one. It is not that cushiony like the Dynamic but a bib sorts that issue out. A friend of mine has the Dynamic, we rode 120 klicks, 60 uphill. He used to have numbness, now with this saddle he had none, he just felt he has to break it in. It is very delicate to the tilt though. Hi, I have tried many famous saddles, the ones with a large slot to relieve the pressure of the perineum, but I still have pain when I ride a bicycle. Can you confirm that with this saddle there is no pressure on the perineum?
Everyone is different so I can’t “confirm” if it would work for you but I have fixed many people with SQ Lab and especially those that came from big hole saddles - personally I have never been comfortable on those types of saddles
It seems that the new standard 612 also has that edge. Although in the rearview pictures of their webpage it does not seem to be any bump in that area. Is this the new version saddle (the one you are discussing in this video)? I was thinking about getting either a 612 ERGOWAVE® active or an SMP vt20c. After seeing your other videos where you highly recommend the 612, this is kinda confusing. Thanks for your feedback.
I will have to do another video to answer your questions. However, the short answer is the Standard 612 saddle is still my preferred saddle and the most comfortable saddle I have ever ridden. I have not gotten my hands on a 2.0 or whatever the new 612 "standard" saddle may b called. Huge issues with the new distributor. As in they they have not been in operation for months! Thanks for taking the time to answer me, George, I really appreciate it. I went to the SQlab website to check out their new saddles, and it seems to me that all 612 saddles have a new design (different than the old 612 version with the blue logo that you show in this video). It seems that both, the 612 ERGOWAVE® R, and 612 ERGOWAVE® active 2.1 have some black lines around the middle of the saddle (depression area), similar to the edge you refer to cause discomfort in your 612R saddle. So in short, I was trying to figure out if you had the chance to take a look at the new 612 saddle (not the 612R) and if that edge that causes discomfort is now in all versions. However, you already answered me if you say that you have not got your hands on a new 612 "standard" saddle. Maybe I will wait a bit until I can find more input about the new 612 (non R version), or I will take a look at the old version with the blue logo which you considered to be very comfortable. Once again, thank you for your reply. I must say that I came across your channel specifically because of this saddle since I did not find much information/reviews about this one and really appreciate your input. Cheers.
@@bmmelo2oo7 you’re very welcome! Once the distributor is up and running I may have to purchase a few saddles because I’m constantly shuffling saddles around. Not to mention, when I removed the 612R saddles that left 2 open slots 😂
Hi George… similar experience with the 612R happens to me . I killed my seat bones in just a 60 mile ride. I just installed a 611 in a MTB/ gravel bike. Looks much more comfortable even compared to the 612. Any experience using the 611 for road biking vs the 612 ? Thanks for your great advice
SQL Labs video on the different between the 612 and 612R shows that the latter is for a more aggressive race position and has a longer cut-out section because of it. Hence, before buying either saddle, make sure one reads the documentation on the SQLab web site and pick a saddle appropriate for your primary riding position. Most endurance riders, like myself, should not pick the 612R: th-cam.com/video/OxIknYHmW0w/w-d-xo.html
Hello George : I have to replace my 2018 SQ Lab 612 Ergowave active saddle but I cannot find my size, 14 cm. As I read some of your replies to folks commenting I was intrigued by your stance opposing active flex in the saddle based on power loss. Sq Lab has the non active version in my size but if I were to replace my old 612 I would either have to size down to 13 or up to 15. This now 4 year old, nearly 10,000 mile saddle has been the most comfortable saddle I have ever ridden. As another commenter has said he isn't as concerned about power loss as comfort. That would be my position too, but you indicated that when given a choice most customers ended up preferring the non- active version. I would be interested in knowing why they felt that way. And honestly I can't tell whether I flexed the saddle or not. It was just so comfortable I didn't care whether I was flexing it or not. Is it possible to describe the difference between the feel of the active versus non active version? So my second question would be, what would the drawback be of sizing up to 15 from 14 if I must have an active 612 Ergowave? Thanks for your great videos.
Norbert thank you for watching. Please make your comment much shorter. What is your question please? I can't possibly read comments this long from 100's of viewers. I want to help but you need to be short and sweet.
@@SeeYouUpTheRoad Okay, sorry : 1) why did your customers prefer the non active vs. the active 612 when they tested both saddles? 2) any drawback to sizing up from 14 to 15cm in a 612 active since I can't get a 14 in a 612 active?
@@TheBigHouse76 I need things to be succinct because I am not a full time TH-camr… yet 😉 I still run a very busy bike shop - by myself. 1. My customers never test ride active and non-active. They only tested the non-active because that’s what I ride so that is what I recommend and carry in the store for demos. Active saddles don’t make any sense to me. Years ago with the 612 before it was Ergowave the shape was different for the active saddle. I tried and hated it. It was a completely different saddle to me anyway. So I never carried it. My customers trust me and they take my advice. If I say they should ride a non active saddle they just do it. 2. If you are a true 14 then you should not ride a 15 period. I put a 15 on my bike once because all my 14 demos and all my personal 14 saddles were out on demo. In relatively short rides of only three hours I was having numbness at the back of my leg and complete loss of power in my last leg the longer the ride went on. I did about three rides to confirm that it was the 15 saddle and not its positioning. I immediately took that saddle off and put on a completely different brand saddle on my bike because all my personal saddles, as I mentioned before, were out on demo. What part of the country/world are you living in? Could I get a 14 to you?
@@SeeYouUpTheRoad Thanks for the quick reply. You are a You Tube natural. Okay, glad I asked about whether I should consider sizing up. I didn't want to contemplate having to do that since I went through all the steps SQ Lab recommended for getting the right size. I am a 14, did the whole cardboard paper fitting, sizing up if it was in between and then adding 0, 1 or 2 based on riding style. I live in northern CA, the SF Bay Area. Yeah I could see ditching the active and seeing if the standard 612 is as comfy as the active one. I ride on asphalt pretty much exclusively anyway, not a gravel guy nor an MTBer either. Let me know.

Do you ride in the rain? Have you had water puddle in the depression while riding? Thanks for the videos!
Ha ha just did a rainy 200km this Saturday. Not by choice, but that was the weather of the event day. No, I’ve never noticed.
Hello Luis! I’m glad I want the only one to have a bad experience with the 612R. I have not personally ridden the 611 I can’t voice an opinion on it.
SQL Labs video on the different between the 612 and 612R shows that the latter is for a more aggressive race position and has a longer cut-out section because of it. Hence, before buying either saddle, make sure one reads the documentation on the SQLab web site and pick a saddle appropriate for your primary riding position. Most endurance riders, like myself, should not pick the 612R:

@@buster.keaton correct the 612R is not for endurance riders.
611 standard?
I’ve never ridden the 611. I have no opinion on it … yet 😊
UPDATE: I have two 612 Ergowave 14cm Active saddles in stock :-) as of Sept 13, 2022
Sit further back or move it forward no? Well…. Obviously not
Tried that …all of that. Short nose saddles are not for me
LOL, sam here, R version impossible to set up
Why why why did they even bother making the R version? 😂
"Yes you read the title right!" lol no Im not, you are talking about different saddle, the R 🤦🏼
Yes I hate the 612R
@@SeeYouUpTheRoad but you didnt put the R in the title

Have you used the 611 for road bikes ? I wonder between 612 (no R which went bad on my seat bones) vs the 611 to use for road biking
Thx
