    This is a very helpful video. I just want to make one small point, which is that it is not a 'pilot tune' but a pilot TONE. In case anyone is confused by the reference, it is nothing to do with tuning the transmitter and receiver as such but an inaudible tone that is sent by the transmitter to help in avoiding interference from other radio sources. To quote a manual for one model of transmitter:
    “The pilot tone supports the receiver’s squelch function (Squelch) and protects against interference due to RF signals from other units. The transmitter adds an inaudible signal, known as the pilot tone, to the transmitted signal.
    The receiver detects and evaluates the pilot tone, and is thus able to identify the signal of the matching transmitter and mute all others.”
    It is a very helpful feature, but is not supported on earlier generations of Sennheiser equipment. If you have it, do make sure the feature is activated, as on the video, and per your manual.
    If it is supported on the transmitter but not on the receiver (or vice versa) the manual says you should deactivate it. And of course if it is supported by neither, there’s nothing to do, as the menu options for it won’t be there.
    The manual goes on to say:
    “Transmitters of the ew 500 series (first generation) do not transmit a pilot tone and the receivers of the ew 500 series (first generation) cannot evaluate the pilot tone. Nevertheless, you can combine the plug-on transmitter with a receiver of the first generation. However, when combining units, please observe the following:
    • With the ew 500 G2 plug-on transmitter and an ew 500 G2 receiver:
    Activate the pilot tone function with both transmitter and receiver.
    • With the ew 500 G2 plug-on transmitter and an ew 500 receiver or vice versa:
    Deactivate the pilot tone function with the ew 500 G2 transmitter or receiver.”
    [G2 = 2nd generation]
    PS I wonder if the pilot tone is just a hgh-pitched one, above human range of hearing -- in which case I can't help wondering if dogs can hear it. Someone could try to see if theirs reacts when it is turned on..😄 [...when the tone is turned on, not the dog, that is.☺]

    This noise means you’re getting interference on that channel and to really solve it you need to find a frequency that is free enough from other signals. A “quick and dirty” way to scan for a free frequency (The meters on sennheiser units really help) is to leave your mic off, and look at the RF and AF meters. If you see activity on either one with the transmitter off, then you have interference. Keep tuning to new frequencies (you have to actually set it and see if you have activity) until you have no activity with the mic or other transmitter off. Once that happens, turn the mic on, tune it to the frequency that you tuned the receiver to, then sync the mic with the receiver if you have a model that does that.
    After you do that then you can set squelch if you want, but I rarely touch that. I’d rather get rid of the interference than try to gate it out with squelch.
    I use wireless in NYC all the time that are too old or don’t have the capability to use a program like wireless workbench and using this method works almost all the time.

    You might explain squelch a little more for the user. While it does affect range, the whole idea of the squelch setting is to act like an RF signal gate (using audio terms), so that it only allows a RF signal through that goes over the threshold. If your transmitter is off, and the RF level goes above the squelch setting, that's where you get that awful white noise blaring through your sound system. The proper setting is high enough so sporadic RF noise doesn't cause a problem, yet low enough so the range is effective without dropouts. I've heard many people complain about their Sennheiser mics making the white noise, expecting it to work perfectly out of the box, and that's just not the case.

    • @TomasHundza
      @TomasHundza  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Paul, you are totally right, the squelch is a wider topic, and as I learn new and new things every day about tech, I plan to cover this things more accurately and detailed. Thanks for your awesome insight, and as you say: all of us - owners of Sennheiser systems should learn to squeez out the maximum from our devices, as they are great, but with a certain learning curve of their settings.

    • @afb1487
      @afb1487 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dead right, Paul. We used to have a taxi firm's chat invading our church services till the squelch level was sorted. TBH, though, don't do it yourself unless you have experience. We paid the sound engineering firm that fitted the equipment to come in and do it, and it was money well spent. It can be done as part of annual checks, if not urgent.

    Hi friend, I have a Sennheiser EW 100 G3. And exactly the "mute" thing is happening to me both in the receiver module and in the microphone .. I did exactly what you say in the video but it failed to sound the microphone .. curiously this afternoon I used the microphone in my work without problem .. but I was getting some sparks while using it and decided to connect it at home to see if I could detect the fault ... the truth is that since I connected it at home now I get the "mute" and I have not managed to remove it. .. the microphone no longer sounds ... what do you think might have happened?

    • @TomasHundza
      @TomasHundza  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi mate, as you are describing your case, it seems that the problem is in the hardware - that's the reason, why it was repeating to run again, but finally, it gave up.: the biggest portion of cases like yours is caused by a faulty motherboard in the transmitter. I advise to visit an authorised Senn servis, describe to them your case, and say, that it's probably a hardware problem. I wish you a fast repair, and please, write to us here the result of your case. Best wishes! TH

    • @TomasHundza
      @TomasHundza  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Anthony, the reality is, this is a very common problem with Senn systems, time to time, when you turn off the mic during a show, the reciever can send that loud hiss throu the PA. The only soultion we found is to turn off the reciever first, just then the mic - that's the safe order. The second option is, to never turn of the mic during the show, just mute it throu the mic options or on the mix.

    whenever turnoff transmitter in receiver we get to much loud pink noise any suggestion for that

    • @TomasHundza
      @TomasHundza  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Annu, if it happens very often, in that case, the squelch is not high enogh. (the envirovment is probably overcrowded with other frequencies, and the system loses the standby connection between the transmitter and reciever.) Try 10db+, en extreme situations maybe even 18db+, but you have to cout on, that with raising the squelch, you loose some range - not too much, no need to be afraid (distance between the trans & rec.) The best solution in professional conditions is, however, to not turn off the transmitter during the gig, the sound engineer should mute the mic, or you should mute it on your ipad, if thats the case. I hope, I helped :)

    • @ELFMEDIA
      @ELFMEDIA 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First of all you have to scan for free frequency list before use system. Every new location have local interference sources. RF level must be about zero level while transmitter is off. It means that no other signals on this frequency and nothing will distort your microphone signal when it turns on.
      Second is squelch level. It works like noise gate audio filter, but with radio signal, not audio. It's about noise that you can listen on radio, when it's not tuned to radio station.
      Sorry for my English ;-)
