Poor Man's Bonsai - Make a dwarf scheflerra bonsai!!!

  • I apologize that it's been so long since I've done a video. I had filmed footage for a few different videos at the end of 2015 but got too busy with the holidays and such that I didn't get around to editing any until the new year.
    Here, I am making a dwarf scheflerra, a very common house plant found in many home and garden stores, bonsai with a nice rock accent that I am hoping will someday become a root over rock bonsai of sorts.
    This is a simple yet fun project you can do in probably less than 30 minutes. Since I made this video two months ago, the bonsai is still nice and healthy and I think I'll attempt, again, making it sprout aerial roots!
    I hope you enjoy this affordable, yet fun project!!
    Filmed and edited by me.
    Music is written by me. Song is called "Sammi's Pedal Dance", which is a song I wrote for my little sister.
    Thanks and please like and subscribe!
    Chris

      @gerry but they're of the same type. I've heard you can put two of the same type into one pot to create the look you want, so bushier etc, and to have more stems... Why are you saying he's wrong? They're not going to fight eachother to the death, they'll use the same amount of water surely. And even so, plants can be trial and error, I see no harm giving it a go, I've seen schefflera bonsai before lol.

    It looks very nice and a lot of fun but I have a question about the roots. I usually have a green thumb with house plants, therefore, I’m wondering what do you do about the roots as they grow? Won’t the plants get potbound? Or, can a Schefflera be root pruned? For example, I have a healthy Asparagus Fern that I prefer to keep in a certain sized pot. About once a year, I remove it from the pot then cut off a few inches of the roots then put it back in the same pot. Those ferns are pretty tough so it doesn’t harm the plant at all. So ... I’m wondering if the roots of the Schefflera can be pruned/trimmed in the same manner? If anyone has an answer, please jump in.

  • @sharonjordan1606
    @sharonjordan1606 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    What's the purpose of the screen in the bottom of the new planter? Also could you have used the soil you brushed off the roots from the old planters in the new ceramic one?? Then just add fresh soil around it??? Were the original plantings from a regular sized scheffelera????

  • @gazepskotzs4
    @gazepskotzs4 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I use this method for Banyan styl F. benjamina
    the only thing I do different is that I pot this structure you made in a large 5 gallon pot and let it develop for 2 years
    than I take it out the pot trim the roots and some branches and place it in a training bonsai pot
    after this treatment I repot and trim them once a year.
    The 2 year growth period and letting it grow large makes the branches fuse faster and with thick stems.

    If you want a rock, to be intertwined.
    Root, pull up, wash off roots, insert rock, and re-pot. Wait 4 months or so, and slowly expose the root ball, by digging it up over time. They will become hard and stem like as they adjust to the new light/humidity.

      Also very happy to hear you pronounce the name of that plant right =) lot of people on TH-cam are saying it Shef-uh-lar-uh or or Shef-i-lara. Nothing to most people, but to a pronunciation fuss-budget like myself is enough to burn my ears off.

    Do you ever check out the thrift stores for pots? That seems to be the most expensive component of Bonsai.

    • @ontherims3284
      @ontherims3284 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A masonry/ceramic drill bit, can be used to put drain holes in shallow cooking dishes, etc. Sometimes, you break one.. sometimes you end up with a neat/cheap planter.

    Great teaching tool question
    Can you create a bonsai on a rescued pointsettia
    How long are the roots
    It will remain in my apartment until spring but I'll have to bring it back in before summer as it is too hot in Atlanta to leave outside
    Thank you

    • @PoorMansBonsai
      @PoorMansBonsai  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm actually not sure if a pointsettia would work. I guess if you can keep it alive then go for it! Pointsettias can be hard to keep alive so hopefully it does okay. Yeah I think it will look nice indoor to escape the cold! :)

    I too bought some wire at Home Depot.. Can't see paying big bucks for copper at the nursery.

    • @warhorse1956
      @warhorse1956 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Careful, steel wire is toxic to a lot of plants. You can get aluminum copper annealed wire for great prices on ebay. That's where I get all of mine. Straight copper is only needed for really heavy bending of hard to form thick branches.

    • @emptynest2664
      @emptynest2664 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks.. Would the insulation on copper wire protect the tree from harmful toxins?

    • @warhorse1956
      @warhorse1956 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Angel Vega
      Yes, that's why I mentioned the aluminum, copper annealed wire. It's a lot cheaper than regular copper wire, but just a bit softer.
      If you order a small set of 4 different wire sizes, you'll soon see what works best for your particular needs.

    What soil mix are you using? Its a a bit confusing to get advocate information. Most information say to just use coarse (kind of) and water everyday. But that wont work for me and it looks like you are doing using a mix of regular potting soil and perlite or something? Do you have a easy base for regular use for easy pants?

    • @DurandCompton
      @DurandCompton 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are a million opinions on soil. It all depends on where you live and the climate therein. Aggregate and potting soil (along with Perlite and such) make up most soil mixes. If it's hot and/or dry where you live, use more potting soil than is typically recommended. Pros tend to use nothing but aggregate and heavy watering, but that won't work if you can't afford to baby your trees every day. For what it's worth.

    Hey, nice videos, can the two trunks actually merge ?
    Do you think something can be made with Mimosa pudica ?
    Thanks for the vid

    • @PoorMansBonsai
      @PoorMansBonsai  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +shaihuld Im glad you like the videos!! As far as the trunks, Im not entirely sure if they will actually merge, but I've seen many scheflerra bonsais that are bursting with aerial roots, so I'm hoping with mine that will happen and then maybe take on the appearance of one plant as all the roots start intertwining.
      I'm not sure about the minosa pudica. I've never done anything with those. I googled some pics and it looks like some people have? I have a little mimosa silk tree growing in a pot right now that I hope to bonsai someday. :)
