Had the pleasure of taking classes with him at the old National Guitar Institute in Murphysboro Tn. back in the late 90's. A nicer person you'll never meet. He could play a rubber band on a popsicle stick.
Loved the song and the performance. You're inspiring my lapsteel playing. I've been using it to write some new songs. I also love that you're using open-D tuning. I just started working with that. I love the bluesy sounds!
Thanks for this. I appreciate the tutorial, and your detailed descriptions, as I'm totally blind and don't see your movements at all. Very nice tune. I just got a lap steel for my birthday, and now have a better idea of its sound.
A week before he died, my best friend gave my me his lap steel. I was floorded with the reality that he was going to soon be gone and that he thought that much of me. I can play some slide guitar pretty well standard tuning but having trouble with the open tunings. Anyway I love this song and would like it to the first tune I learn. Maybe just the melody. I will do it one way or another but I'm open to tips or tutorials on this song. BTW he is playing in the BIG band now.
Never heard this before, really nice music, like the sort of 'break chord' at about 1:32 & 2:32, tasteful, seems like this should be in the top ten somewhere in the world
Matt, I love this and study all of your videos but this seems to be in a different key (or tuning) than your others. Can you (or anyone reading this) please tell us what the tuning is? I want to learn this in the worst way and I am very new to lap steel. Happy New Year, and thanks for the inspiration.
Matt - if you still follow these comments... 1) What is your setup on this song - what are you using pedals 2) how do you reduce string noise from the slide? Do you have a website?
So sorry to hear about the loss of your friend. On my site, www.6stringranch.com, in the video/educational section, there are 5 lessons that will help you play this piece. I don’t have tablature available for it. It’s in D Tuning, low to high, D A D F# A D
Matt, you’re a virtuoso, a natural born teacher, a charismatic and funny raconteur, and just one of the great things about the world in 2019. 👍🏽
That is absolutely beautiful!
Beautiful!
Oh man oh man this is truly beautiful. Thank you Mr Smith.
Super cool series. Thanks for all the info!

My favorite video teacher. Hands down.
I hope to live long enough to be at least 1/3 as good as this guy at anything he's does !
