    A live, semi-improvised performance, all on hardware, and inspired by the anticipation of the new (school) year. I wanted to do one last huge setup, with a lot of different gear, before the semester starts and I get busy. I was super happy with where this one went.
    At the heart of it is the Arturia Keystep Pro, which is sequencing four melodic lines (bass on ARP Odyssey, pads on SH-01a, melodic arp on Subharmonicon, and granular melody on Clouds), while also providing clock for the non-MIDI DFAMs. Despite the huge assortment of gear on the table, this one just worked for me because the instruments each have a really beautiful baseline sound.
    Arturia Keystep Pro - Sequencing and clock
    Korg ARP Odyssey into Empress Echosystem - Bass
    Roland SH-01a into Strymon Ola into Meris Ottobit Jr. - Pad
    Moog Subharmonicon into Meris Polymoon - Arp melody thing
    Mutable Instruments Clouds into Strymon Magneto - Granular melody
    Moog DFAM into Empress Multidrive into Union Tube & Transistor Lab - Kick and snare
    Moog DFAM into Erica Synths & Ninja Tune Zen Delay - Hi hats and noise weirdness
    Written and recorded in a 48-hour period and uploaded as is, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

    You didn’t gel with the keystep for the same reason I’ve not gelled with my programmable step sequencer. It’s not a creative process like non deterministic chance ones like Bloom or Varigates, or a Mimetic Digitalis or Turing a machine through a quantiser. It’s happy accidents we live for in the modular world and the ability discover sweet spots as we play. Great setup up and progressions here though.

    Great stuff as always, Jay. That ARP Odyssey sounds awesome - love the opening arpeggio. Reminded me of Deadmau5 "The Veldt". Sorry to hear you're not getting along with the KeyStep. It's been on my radar since Loopop did a review on it a couple of months back.One thing that occurred to me while watching the video would be to experiment with routing the MIDI data from the KeyStep through the NDLR perhaps? Maybe set up some sequences on the KeyStep to mute certain tracks/parts and allow the NDLR to take over i.e use MIDI CC messages via the control channel on the NDLR to automate the Chord Degree or Type. Could be interesting? Just a weird random thought :) I saw Slentendre Beer achieve something similar with their BeatStep Pro / KeyStep combo.

    Often when I see setups this large, the results don't always live up to expectations. This is impressive in every sense of the word. I'm just now getting from a one voice setup to a two voice setup (hopefully three soon), and this has given me a lot of ideas of where to go from the present. Every aspect of this is amazing, and it's great to see how you utilize each synth's features to the fullest.

    Found your channel the other day and soooo glad I did! I've been hooked on your videos. As someone who has been wanting to experiment with synths for a long time merely out of love for the sound, it's magic watching you create and explain what you're doing. Gives me inspiration that I might be able to create something semicool myself someday. I guess for me it's just a matter of deciding on an entry level at this point. Definitely my favorite channel on TH-cam at the moment!

    Amazing and I DO Appreciate the text telling us what you are using, despite what I am about to say:
    Why does no one modulate a(in the classical sense) the key signatures? Changing chords to suit that? That seems to have disappeared and it just becomes maybe change the root note for flavour, but no Major/minor, no Eb to C7th etc. Forgive me if I missed this, but it's a genuine question. I certainly see it is not beyond you or your creative sensibilities which are well on show here. Thank You again, still lovely stuff of course.

  • @AcydDrop

    Let me start by saying, I love everything about this jam it's completely brilliant! Thank you for sharing! I also want to comment on two things. First I love what I've taken to calling the Moog tiny's. The DFAM, Mother32, SubH and MiniT they have a pretty fun Moog sound and are generally approachable synths. I also wanted to note that the front panel of the Korg ARP Odyssey reminded me a little of the ARP 2600 front panel with things pointing to sliders in some kind of child's electronics experiment kit (I always loved that about the ARP 2600 and instantly love that in everything else I see that even vaguely reminds me of it).
    I do have one question (and if this is a Patron only sort of question I respect that). But what do you use to record this on a PC? Do you bring it in as a L/R mix through an audio interface or do you bring in each sound in and downmix them to a track? Either way which interface do you use to record? I've been using a Focusrite RedNet A16R (x2) for line-in level stuff (I admit it's overkill for my purpose).

    • @JayHosking
      @JayHosking  4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I use the Allen & Heath Qu-16 to bring in each sound individually, although with master-level devices (e.g. Octatrack), that's sometimes only a stereo in. Here it's five stereo ins and one mono in. I also use the Soundcraft Signature MTK when recording with Sam, my drummer friend, and the Steinberg UR44 or iRig Pro Duo with a portable setup.
      I record into Reason, which is basically only acting as a tape. I'm usually mixing the music during setup, getting levels and tone right, so not really any mixing in the box, but I do master using EQ/compression/limiting. And thanks!

      I kinda agree about the front panel and the 2600, but it seems to me to have more in common otherwise with the Cat. The odyssey has the sequencer and arp and a few extra parameters but to me it feels like it’s the cat underneath.

    Jay in your view, which would you recommend as a sequencer...the Deluge or the Keystep Pro ? I need something to bring my instruments together, I have the Machinedrum UW , Tb303, Perfourmer, Artria Drumbrute, and 2 Juno's. I've had these instruments for many years but only starting to use midi sequencing and clocking now. Crazy but true. Im old school and like hands on, and dont like menu diving. ( reminder 303 is on din sync ) or is there a different sequencer you would suggest ? I really want to use the Perfourmer to its fullest capabilities too

      @@JayHosking Yeah the Novation is the alternative and has some nice features but not nearly enough outs. And I just checked you don't get velocity outs on the beatstep. I just don't understand why the manufacturers don't get it considering we're well into the eurorack era and people who use keys need these features. Jay, awesome channel. Love your stuff. I'm a doctor in Amsterdam with the same hobby. Can I ask you a question? I currently have a moog sub 37, nord stage 2, prophet 6, nord drum 2, and elektron analog rytm. I have them all connected to an iMac with logic pro X but I would prefer to jam dawless. What I'd like to be able to do is have the analog rytm as my tempo master, start a beat on this, and then be able to play a bass line on my moog for instance, and then immediately let that loop, so I can then play chords on the nord, let that loop, en play a lead on prophet, you get my drift. All synced (preferably to rytm). What would you recommend for me? Can I do this with my current gear, do I need a 'brain/sequencer', and which one do you recommend, as you obviously have tried many (and are not very positive about the keystep pro). Hope you find the time to answer, merry christmas!

      A lot of people do like the Keystep Pro, so don't listen to me! Plus, I need to give it another spin soon. But for myself and the setup you're describing, I'd consider one of two things: either the Launchpad Pro MkIII, which can sequence four devices (Sub37, NS2, P6, ND2) and easily sync to the Rytm; or, if you're feeling more adventurous and think that your setup might expand, either the Octatrack or Digitakt with their eight MIDI tracks. I am usually reluctant to recommend the Octatrack, even though it's my favourite, but if you're already into the Elektron thing, one of these two boxes might be a good addition. Best of luck, and thanks!

      @@JayHosking thankyou! can you do the live looping with both the digitakt and octatrack, or only with the octa? and what about things like the squarp pyramid? thanks!!!!!

    • @JayHosking
      @JayHosking  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tendingtropic7778 If you want to just capture audio, you could use a number of audio loopers that have MIDI sync (e.g. RC-505). You could record in MIDI with either Digitakt or Octatrack while playing live, though Elektron sequencing can be a bit finicky when done in real-time. Pyramid is fun and leads to neat ideas but wouldn't be my first choice.

      @@JayHosking Thanks again! last question: I can confirm that I'd prefer recording/looping via midi, not audio. So if the digitakt/octatrack live loopiong route is a bit finicky (don't want that), and the squarp pyramid wouldnt be your first choice, what would be? Once again, thanks and I'll leave you alone after this haha. Merry christmas!
