This isn't about money. The dogs deserve a better life. It's selfish to keep them under these circumstances.
I agree with John, this isn't a financial issue. It just isn't fair to a dog to be boarding it so much. You shouldn't have a pet if you aren't home to be with them.
The lesson here: don’t get a pet if you can’t be around to care for it.
The same should go for children
In my old role I was travelling 1 week out of the month. I held off in getting a dog until I my role changed. Now I only travel for 1 day every 2-3 months. It's called being a responsible owner.
The pet dont love you either if someone else starts feeding it the pet will leave you for them
People don't even to this with having children, let alone pets.
For dogs they checked and when they see their owner the parts of the brain in humans that light up is the "love receptors" @@carlsonkurt87
Getting “rid” of the dog in this case is actually setting the dog free.
She actually has 2. They should stay together 😢
Setting the dog free makes it a stray. She needs to re-home the dog.

I will never own a dog. Cats are fine. My cat is five years old. She has not had any major issues but shit does add up over time. I can walk out of the store with $200.00 worth of stuff that would cost me $100.00 just five years ago. That was freaking yesterday. Gas is also $3.21 a gallon!! It's too damn expensive. I need a freaking moped man. Mopeds and 4cyl beaters are epic. How's keeping up with the Jones working for 70% of the country??
Most people can’t afford the pets they own and shouldn't be pet owners but Americans aren’t ready for that conversation
AMEN! finanically or time-wise.
Yup! And they convince themselves that they love their pets and will give them the world and I’m sure they would, but they cannot afford to do so and struggle.
They are too selfish to listen. They just want what suits them and don't care that the pet is suffering.
So true. To the detriment of the dog's mental and physical health..
My under stimulated dog is better off than dead because no one else took it in.
We need to hear the dogs side of this story because it sounds pretty ruff.

I waited almost six years to get a dog because I traveled so much. I wanted one so badly, but not being home isn’t fair nor stable for any pet. So I waited for my situation to be more stable.
You're smart and made good choices for yourself and your dog. You choose to get the dog so its a lifelong commitment. Its like having a baby. You don't get rid of your baby when you don't have time for it too. I lost my dog a year ago and I want another dog soooo badly but I can't at this point with my job so I can't get one at this point, its not fair to them or to myself and I'm only doing it for selfish reasons. I'm doing it for myself and not for the dog.
All dogs deserve good humans, not all humans deserve dogs
Many friends of mine - when their beloved pet dies - don't get another pet because when they travel they need to find a dog or cat sitter. I've never owned a pet, and being confined to running home to let the dog out is my number 1 reason.
My neighbor has 2 German shepherds. She works in an office in town and he works at the police department.
Gone from 7am-6pm. Home for like an hour and then gone until 11pm.
On the weekends I hardly see their vehicles. I know their dogs are crated most of the time. They don’t walk them and don’t take them anywhere. I only know the dogs live there because I see them looking out the window when the owners are home.
100% agree with John. Find a close friend or family member who's willing to take the dog. That way, she can still see her dogs when she's at home, and the dogs get a more stable and present owner.
To the people defending her that she’s doing her best to be with her dogs, sometimes your best isn’t good enough. She just can’t have a dog with how she’s living
Her dogs deserve a family that’s there for them, not being someone’s emotional support toy for when they happen to be home.
I only listened to the first three minutes....and as a pet lover myself....what moron has a pet and boards it for almost half a year!!! How can people be so stupid and selfish????
I can answer that but I shouldn’t
Unfortunately our ancestors didn't breed them for intelligence or empathy.
At this point the board is the one who actually owns the dog
She probably didn’t have that type of job when she got the dogs. They are 5 and 6.
Circumstances change
Yes, I was in that situation & boarding my dog got quite expensive but there was no way I was going to get rid of my dog!
My sister in-law same. Paid close to 8500 for animal hotels. Her husband was furious after 4yrs she finally put them for adoption. Mind you, she had 30K of CC debt and 50k in student loans.

That poor dog. Some people shouldn't have animals.
I’m 68 and have had dogs probably 50 of those years. You can definitely find someone to do dog sharing to take them while you travel. Another option is get a roommate who loves dogs and they care for your pets when you are gone.
I was one of those roommates that took care of the pet. The person I roomed with knocked off $300 off my rent because I would do so much with her dog while she was gone. I didn't do it because she asked. I did it because I see a furry thing and I want to be its friend.
Now I run a pet sitting business as a side hustle. Not because I need the money, but because I love it.
Being gone that much is not fair to the dog. That would stress my dog out way too much.
@@silentnot4812 Your dog is super stressed when you are home so it's a win-win.
I’m a widower, semi retired, and live alone. I can afford a cat or a dog. What I do is buy food for about 5 feral cats in the neighborhood. Some of these look abandoned by their owners. I also built a shelter for them.
Gross. Those 5 feral cats just turned into 20 feral cats.
@@kj7653 It depends. We took care of faral cats ourselves, and they were all fixed. There are lots of programs that are willing to help people who take care of cats.

EVERY BODY EVERY BODY WANTS TO BE A CAT!
I love pets. Always have.
Pets are luxuries. If you can't afford their care, you can't afford the pet.
Yes they are, dogs are luxuries a cat is a necessity. I would never let a animal suffer though. It's always good to have something though. Dogs are boojiee.

Poor people can love animals too.
@@JoyceW-j3q Of course they can, but I doubt the landlord would accept that as a justification for not paying the rent. 🤨
@@JoyceW-j3q shouldn't u be able to afford them?
@@JoyceW-j3q Love is not equal to providing a stable and healthy home for them.
My daughter often dog-sits for someone down the street. She gets $10/day just to feed them twice a day and an additional $10 when she takes them for a walk. I don't know how much she pays, but $20/day to a young teenager is way cheaper than boarding the dog. My daughter suffers from a never-ending migraine, so having a quiet way to make money to support her quiet hobbies is really nice.
We have a friend that was paying $40/day to have someone come in twice a day to simply feed and check on his dog. He was thrilled to learn we would take her while he was away - no charge. We loved having her as we no longer have a dog of our own.
Yes but no dog should be alone for weeks at a time.
Yeah but that's not a long term solution for the pet or the owner. Neither is boarding it. I hate giving up pets but in this case the owner doesn't even spend time with it
@@ajuister We consider it a vacation for the dog. We live in a rural area, and the town dogs love spending a week or two with us. We shower them with attention and take them on long walks or let them off lead if possible (they are never off our acreage). They love the extra attention and all of the smells that are new to them.
I charge about $300 a week to dog sit for people on vacation. It's really good and high demand side hustle.
I'm on the side of the dogs here. That is exactly the reason that I, as a dog lover, do not have one. I don't think it would be fair to the dog since I am gone so much.
Despite no jobs and people can no longer afford to live, people will be lining up to live off the government. Acquiring $55k monthly is indeed a blessing...

Well, I picked the challenge to put my finances in order. Then I invested in cryptocurrency, stocks, through the assistance of my discretionary fund manager

YES!!! That's exactly her name (Hither Raschke)so many people have recommended highly about her and am just starting with her😊 from Brisbane Australia🇦🇺
I hate when people say they are going to get rid of their pets. They are sensitive beings and people need to be responsible if they adopt them. Make sure they get a good home if you have to give them up.
The dog needs a new home and you need a new job. $90k a year before taxes is not enough to warrant being away from home 6 months out of the year.
Agreeed
For real. Not to mention the amount of money actually spent on the pet sitting. A traveling job isn’t worth it. Get a new job that is at home and stay with your dogs.
Some people love being on the road
went to the comments to say the exact same thing
But in Cincinnati, 90k a year for a travel job is not so bad. But 10k a year is a lot for boarding. We have 2 dogs and don’t pay that annually for boarding, and we have 2 incomes! Not to mention food and vet bills. Sadly, I am not sure she can afford the pets.
Here is another idea, why not find a roommate who is vetted to take care of the dogs when she is gone. Give them a discount on their rent. She can save money on her dog sitting and create a more stable home for the dogs. The bonus is that her home is not empty for 50% of the year and is more secure. Otherwise, she should probably rehome them, but she needs to be super careful about who she rehomes too.
I have a friend who lives on disability. She told me recently that she has only $35 in her bank account. She does have 7 large healthy dogs!
How has she managed to hide this from the g.o.v.t?
My son and his wife, same thing. Always broke and I'm forever bailing them out, and they chose to 'rescue' 3 large dogs. They did get some society to neuter 2 of them, and I tried to convince them to get insurance on them, but no, and they haven't been dewormed. She can no longer work as the dogs 'eat the house' if left alone, apparently. Honestly, I am subsidising them and I only have ONE CAT as I know how expensive it's become to have even a mid size dog.
Johns reaction was spot on. Sell the dogs. Most people shouldn't have dogs and 10k to keep him is absurd. Most people don't know how to care of dogs. Most dogs were bred to do work and you must give them a job. if they don't have a job and your always gone.. your relationship with that dog is bad. Its not good. He may wag his little tail at you after your 6-month wanderlust. But that's not a sign everything is OK. Your dogs needs are not met.
I mean sure tp Rachel's point if there's something you can do temporarily. Fine. But Ramsey doesn't want me to co-own a house. Or co-parent. But yeah sure co-own another life form?
My daughter and her husband have a dog and when they both changed jobs that require travel, he became the “family” dog. He stays with me when they travel most of the time, sometimes he stays with his younger sister, and sometimes with my second daughter. He has only been to the kennel once, when we all had to attend a weekend family wedding. I admit, spoil him the most, as I am retired and can give him 24 hour company, with long walks in the park. He is doing great!
Congratulations John! You're on the same boat as George with the horse.
Why would you get a dog when you know you travel that much? It's just irresponsible.
I have never understood why poor people spend so much money on pets.
That’s easy. They are great for emotional wellbeing. If you feel lonely, it’s beyond tempting, because it can help give you purpose. Not saying it is fair to the animal, just that I see the temptation
Poor people in general have bad impulse control and reasoning skills. They do what "feels good" in the moment and worry about the consequences if and when they come back to haunt them, then make another short-sighted decision once that happens. A lifetime of doing that leaves you broke with little to no assets.
Because they love them.
That is a very negative generalization about people.
@@elizabethengquist4185 What does your statement add to this conversation? You want to shame him for speaking the truth?
Regardless of how much it costs to board the two dogs, it really isn’t fair to the animals for the owner to be unpredictably unavailable for long periods of time. They could be rehomed as a pair to a new owners who could give them better lives. I’ve loved my own dogs to no end, they were all extraordinary companions. But after the last passed, realized I couldn’t do another justice because of my changed schedule.
SHe is not gone for 6 months at a time.
@@jimmymcgill6778Doesn’t that make it worse though? Her schedule is unpredictable. The dogs never know when she’ll be around or not. That causes stress to me a human, I can’t imagine a dog.

At $90k you can't afford a $10k per year dog. It's not fair to the dog, either.

He already said, sell the horse he might as well have said sell the dog
Unlike Rachel, I can sit here in good faith and say get rid of the dogs.
I know a few people who are living in poverty with multiple pets. Two of them had homes that smelled so bad that I would not even sit down. One who had four while living in an RV, who almost had her child taken away from her from how dirty they made her RV. She had to solicit her family and local church for money to get it professionally cleaned every couple of months in order to keep her child. It never occurred to her to get rid of one of her pets. She was offended when the idea was suggested to her. I knew another woman who was up to her eyeballs in debt, who was having her wages ganrished, who already had a cat and two dogs, and was thinking of getting another 1000$ specialty breed. Thankfully her sister talked her out of it. There is nothing wrong with loving animals, but if you can't function with them, then either don't buy them, or make the decision to give them away. I think that some people would be better off if they could learn to accept that hard truth.
She should get rid of the dogs. Spending half their life in boarding is just too much to ask.
Depends where they go. My dogs board at a great place with a lot of property with a fence so they get lots of running around.
It doesn't matter where the dogs go if the lady ends up going to the ditch. @@semosancus5506

Money advice is subjective, what works for you may not work for me, but it's ideal to have a financial plan. Personally, I delegate my investing to my FA ever since the covid-19 outbreak, and as of today, I'm just about 10% shy of $1m after 100s of thousands invested.

I’m surprised Dr John couldn’t “hear it in your voice” 😆
I took 1 month international vacations each year when I had my doggo. I was able to leave him with my father, at the house he 'grew up' in and was familiar with. Coming back and him seeing me was a great feeling each time... He 'went home' just after Christmas (a few years ago), right before work asked me to start travelling. I have not gotten another pups because I know I do not have the time to properly train them like I used to. Miss him every day, wouldn't get a pet if work continues to require travel -- but he kept me healthy, having a responsibility other than myself.
Shame on her. She never should have gotten a dog then. I adopted my current dog only after I had been working at home 100% of the time for two years. And that was three years ago.

Totally agree with Rachel here - there are people who would be game for having a dog for part of the time. 10k is way more than she absolutely needs to spend.
We no longer have a dog of our own, but gladly sit for several friends. There is one dog which we usually have for about two months out of the year (broken into segments).
anyone who has a pet and is not able to pay his/her debt should rehome the dog. How someone take care of a dog if it is not responsible for himself?
If she's gone that much, she needs to give up the dog.
That dog deserves better than to be abandoned half the time. Poor thing. I hope this woman is responsible and finds her dog a better home instead of just abandoning it at a shelter.
I actually know a gal who co-owns her dog with her parents and other sibling and the dog literally goes back/forth between all three houses. Pretty sure the dog loves it too. Lol

I had always had a dog, but lately the costs have gone up so much. My dear cat is over $100 a month just for decent food, and this summer it was over 3 grand for his teeth. Add in deworming and shots, and that's just a plain old CAT.

My 56 year old sister decided to buy 4 dogs to breed. Problem is, she can't let the puppies go because no one is good enough. She is down to 13 dogs and 2 cats. She can not travel and likely killing her retirement plans. Money down the drain and a 15 year commitment. Relatives won't visit, including her daughter. It is truely sad, not to mention the smell of her house. I always say "people first".
If you can't take care of yourself, you can't take care of a dog. People like to virtue signal on facebook that they would "rather be homeless than part witht their pet" but how good can you take care of your animal while homeless?
The whole "no one else is good enough?" Talk about hubris!
To breed? To make money? Or just to have a lot of dogs?
Once you have kids your view on animals changes. I would have zero issue giving up the dog
People do petshare. Particularly older people like me. We don't want the possible ramifications of taking on a dog but are perfectly happy to have furry friends to stay some of the time knowing that someone is covering any vet bills and so on.... and also that the dog will be collected and taken home if something happens to us. You can even get a legal document written up proving the ownership and defining the scope of the voluntary nature of the petcare
This is good to know!
She's gone for ten to 14 days at a time? I'd say rehome the dogs for the dog's sake.
Animals don't need boarded. There are drop in visit Rover services for 30 mins to hour or whatever want. My daughter has been doing it for 6 years now. She house sits, dog and cat sits, does drop in visits every day, walk dogs, and then can board at her house when not sitting elsewhere. Rover has whatever services you want.
That would be a bad deal for a dog that’s owner is out of town a lot.
Total isolation.
30 mins care day after day for weeks is not good for the animals mental health. They are sociable animals who need human contact. Some dogs are fine being left on their own with minimal interaction and some aren’t. Ask the neighbours of some people who have these drop in services. The other 23 and a half hours the dogs are barking or howling. Doesn’t make good neighbours and the dog gets blamed for their owners lack of understanding.
For 10-14 day stretches? Don't animals need to be let out to pee multiple times a day?
Imagine spending thousands upon thousands, and re-arranging your life for a dog. It will not carry forth your family name, genetics, legacy, knowledge, or life experiences.
If only we applied this same logic to having children! Wouldn’t that be a miracle!
its so obvious yet children and pets are seen as an entitlement. we objectify children and animals as desired possessions but they are sentient beings capable of great suffering

Someone once offered me free rent in exchange for being there when she had to travel for work. (3 red dobies...all big babies) It worked for me at the time... lasted about 18 months until we both had life changes.
This is the ideal situation!
It’s not fair to the dog. Shouldn’t have a dog if you travel a lot.
I kept substituting “child” for “dog” as I listened to this.
Sure, you can put your child up for adoption if caring for it (as you committed to do) no longer fits into your financial plan.
I wouldn't be the one to ask about this. It's easy and not even close- find a good home and "re-home" them. Don't get a dog again.
I feel this is almost cruel on the dogs. If you cant properly maintain dogs or any animals, please dont get them. They are a responsibility, not a luxury
Dont forget to use Churchill mortgage. If you don't, they will put the ads back on. So give them your business. Shout out to Churchill mortgage.

She needed Dave for this one
I don’t think it’s fair to ask a friend to home your dog part time without pay, and frame it as a favor to them.
She never should have gotten a dog to begin with if you travel a lot for work. Some people need to accept they’re not pet people. This just boils down to selfishness.
Have not got another dog due to the cost of boarding and being tied to our home because of dogs… never again…
As far as the dog's happiness, they go to a pet sitter's house which for them is no different from the co owner Rachel suggested. It sounds like the caller really loves her dogs and is sacrificing for them. So many people chain their dogs up or leave them to cry in the back yard all day. Boarding is a huge cost. One thing the caller might do is find a boarding situation similar to military deployment. Theres a place in northwestern virginia that charges extremely reasonably for 3 months at a time. They take amazing care of the dogs. It might be worth the callers while to research such places. There must be a solution that doesnt involve rehoming.
She’s doing her best but sometimes your best isn’t good enough. She’s abusing these dogs by not providing a home.
