  • This video tutorial goes through how to use the VRay Scatter tool in VRay 5 for Rhino. This video goes through the steps in using this tool to create realistic landscapes using scattered plant models. The models used in this tutorial can be found within the 'Megascans' library.
    The key steps in this tutorial can be found below:
    0:33 - Importing the grass asset model
    2:00 - Creating a grass material for the model
    4:35 - Creating a VRay 'Scatter' Asset
    4:55 - Choosing the 'base geometry' for the scatter
    5:20 - Assigning the scatter models - (the grass to be scattered)
    6:00 - Adjusting the scatter parameters
    9:25 - Using multiple scatter assets for different objects
    11:45 - Using maps to control the scatter density

    Hello Tom. Thanks for the excellent tutorial. Unfortunately, Chaos Group doesn't care about VfR a lot and people switches other softwares and engines like Cinema 4D, Arnold renderer, Octane and Blender. Because there are a lot of useful tools and people don't have to wait for very late updates of Chaos Group. Scatter tool is a must for all 3d software and renders engines. In my opinion, both Chaos Group and McNeel are too late to bring it to Rhino. Anyway, your explanation is excellent. Thank you.

    Amazing teaching skills, congrats, Mr. Tom ! Is it even more realistic to combine scatter with v-ray fur, or is it overkill for most PCs/laptops ?

    Hi tom! great titorial! but i have a problem.. scatter is applicate under surface, can i change the side of surface? ( concave)

    • @tombudd15
      @tombudd15  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi L P, many thanks for the comment - if you select the surface and type in the command 'Flip' it should switch the side of the surface the scatter applies to. Essentially this command flips the objects normals so this would also work to flip VRay fur placement too

    Thank you Tom. I really enjoyed your tutorial with your voice, that was super helpful too. However after following all the steps in the tutorial, the texture of the grass doesn't seem to load after rendering it, they are grey. Could you tell me why and if there is solutions?

      This is the link for the grass and you can find lots of other 3d models and textures here quixel.com/megascans/home?category=3D%20plant&category=grass&assetId=qmBr2

    Hi, I followed the instructions exactly as you explained, but for some reason I can't seem to get scatter to work at all. When I add guests to scatter over the scatter host, nothing changes except for the name of the mesh appearing under the "add guests" button in the asset editor. No bounding boxes, no errors, nothing. no information to guide me to figure out what's wrong. I have looked everywhere for a solution to this, but I haven't found anything. Do you know what might be happening here?

      Hi Cody, I have come across this issue before. It is related to the geometry you are trying to scatter on (i.e your scatter host). If you take this surface, extrude it, then explode the extrusion to give you back your original induvidual surface, this usually does the trick of 'resetting' the geometry and the scatter should now work.

    can you do a video on water?! like a pond with ripple and lilies and water fall or water falling on the surface etc... not just a swimming pool tho. Thanks!!!

      Hi Jordan, I have done a basic video on water here: th-cam.com/video/f8X2V_NtrSs/w-d-xo.html and can definitely look into doing a more specifc one on ponds and falling water

    My grass is really big when I scatter it. Is there a way to fix this?

    • @tombudd15
      @tombudd15  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ricardo, there is a scale value within the scatter properties (in the VRay asset editor) and you can scale the scattered grass objects down to a lower value if they are appearing too big
