The story was about himself, his father, an axe, and a cherry tree. And from that simple story I learned about one of the characteristics that makes an American, an American. Americans tell the truth. It may take us time to face up to it, but we always will. And then we will always right the wrongs we have done. Does it matter that the story may be true or not? Does it matter whether Jesus actually ascended to heaven or not? Does it matter that Mohammed heard the angel Gabriel in that mountain cave? Does it matter that Abraham had two sons that would take such remarkably different paths that lead to us? DOES IT MATTER?

It's one thing to use fables, obviously fictional stories to teach lessons, but to tell lies as if they were truths to teach a lesson only works to cheapen the lesson you're teaching. It's why people still call America "The Greatest Country in the world" and believe that in America "we always tell the truth" during a time in history that will be looked back on as a time when America was nearly overthrown and destroyed because enough people refuse to admit they got duped by a conman.
